WELCOME TO

Welcome to BetMGM Haldon Gold Cup Day – the day Devon stops for racing!

Thank you to everyone who has travelled up to Haldon Hill for our biggest race of the season and one that we all very much look forward to.

We’re over the moon with our runners in the BetMGM Gold Cup, the most historic and exciting race in our jumps calendar. Today is especially significant as we celebrate 200 years since a Gold Cup prize was first presented here at Exeter, marking a golden legacy of over two centuries of racing on Haldon Hill

While the modern BetMGM Haldon Gold Cup, a thrilling Grade 2 chase run over approximately 2 miles and 1½ furlongs, began its current chapter in the late 20th century, the history of racing here stretches as far back as 1769 Today, we honour that incredible heritage while showcasing the very best of early season jumping talent.

Widely regarded as the first major two-mile contest in the jumps calendar, it’s a crucial early-season target. Many horses who shine here go on to conquer even bigger stages, such as the Queen Mother Champion Chase or the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham.

The heavy rain on Tuesday came just in time, with the ground conditions now good, which has rewarded us with a fantastic card

What a way to kick off the Westcountry weekend! Our feature race is supported by a strong card, with many runners set to shine on the bigger stage this season Live music after racing adds to the atmosphere, ensuring an unforgettable day at Exeter.

I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day.

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING: MONDAY 17TH NOVEMBER

HEAVITREE BREWERY RACEDAY

Join us for a pivotal meeting right in the heart of the jumping season Expect nothing short of strong, competitive fields as trainers bring their charges here to reach peak fitness, primed for the winter season ahead.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

THE HISTORIC HALDON GOLD CUP

The first Haldon Gold Cup was run in October 1982 as a weight-for-age race and is now celebrated as the ‘jewel in Exeter’s Crown.’ This is a race steeped in rich racing history.

The feature fixture is an early season highlight at Exeter Racecourse and typically attracts some of the country’s best two mile chasers.

It is also considered a stepping-stone to the world’s most prestigious race over this distance, the Queen Mother Champion Chase which takes place at The Festival the following March.

Henrietta Knight has enjoyed numerous successes in the renowned Grade 2 chase winning a record four times with Best Mate (2001), Edredon Bleu (2002 and 2003) and Impek (2006) She reflects: “It is always exciting to win that particular race You get a tremendous reception and everyone is so welcoming. It’s at the beginning of the season and a prestigious race to win. If you do well, you really look forward to the rest of the season.”

Paul Nicholls has saddled eight winners to date in Haldon Hill’s most esteemed stage and he speaks fondly of it as ‘one of the early chasing highlights of the season’ He agrees: “I’ll try and save a nice horse for it. It’s a very good start for two-mile horses. Kauto Star finished second in the race in 2005 before he went on to win the Tingle Creek, and we’ve won it with Lake Kariba, Flagship Uberalles, Azertyuiop, Tchico Polos, Vibrato Valtat and in 2017, Politologue.” In 2020 Greaneteen added his name to the roll of honour and went on to win the Celebration Chase at Sandown and the Tingle Creek in 2021.

This race has acted as a benchmark early on in the career of many iconic racehorses who have then gone on to make history The likes of Cue Card and Sabin du Loir have claimed this title and the 2025 Haldon Gold Cup is set to be just as exhilarating.

Last year’s running was won by the Joe Tizzard-trained JPR One in the hands of jockey Brendan Powell.

MARTATOR is potentially well handicapped again if he can revive after a summer break (won on reappearance last term) so could be worth chancing in a fascinating renewal. Jpr One won this on his comeback last season so another big run looks on the cards, while top-weight Kalif du Berlais is the class act here having won the Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree on his final start.

PLAY SMARTER

If able to build on his solid reappearance second at Chepstow DIRTY DEN may well be the answer The horse he followed home that day has gone in again since, which makes a 3lb nudge all the more tolerable. Ugo Bingo pulled a long way clear of the rest when also finding just one too good on his reappearance here and another bold show could be on the way from Joe Tizzard’s charge. Chicago Storm, Him Malaya and Jet of Dreams are others to consider in a competitive-looking contest.

THEONEWEDREAMOF shaped well when runner-up on debut for Dan Skelton and looks sure to be winning races this season. She’s the one to beat if seeing out the longer trip, with Jupiter Allen, who made a winning reappearance at this track last season, feared most with Harry Cobden aboard for the first time. Vision De Maine hit the ground running over fences last season and should be in the mix on his return. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.THEONEWEDREAMOF (IRE) 2.JUPITER
