to be awarded to most successful Epsom trainer The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2026 racing season. The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020. The current standings can be seen below and are correct as of 28th August.

The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2026 runs from 5th November 2025 to 4th November 2026. Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry.

STANLEY WOOTTON THE MAN WHO GAVE US THE DERBY Written by Sir Mark Prescott Bt We owe legendary Epsom trainer Stanley Wootton MC a great debt of gratitude. In 1969, he secured The Derby’s home at Epsom with his gift to the nation of the 250 acres of Six Mile Hill gallops on Walton Downs, the backdrop for racing’s Blue Riband event The Derby. “In handing over the gallops, I have very much in mind what the people of England have given the Wootton family”. Epsom had become Stanley’s home when his father, Dick, relocated his wife and two sons from Australia, and success soon came knocking. Training from Treadwell House, Dick’s bargain-basement horses were skilfully trained, cunningly placed and heavily backed. Meantime, Stanley’s elder brother Frank became champion Flat jockey in Britain four times before he was 20, whilst Stanley rode his first winner aged 11, going on to win the Chester Cup when he was 14. He lied about his age at the outbreak of The Great War in order to join the Royal Fusiliers and fought at the Battle of the Somme. Shipwrecked on his way en-route to Palestine, he was decorated for ‘conspicuous gallantry, repeatedly attempting to force his way single-handedly into enemy trenches’. Queen Alexandra presented him with his MC at Buckingham Palace on August 8th, 1916. When hostilities ceased, Stanley took over his father’s yard. As a trainer he won several big handicaps, including the Cambridgeshire and on three occasions, between 1921 and 1926, he trained more winners in a season than any other trainer. By the 1930’s, he owned all the horses himself and when asked if he had the largest stable in Britain, his reply was: “I know of none larger”. Possibly, too, he was the greatest trainer of jockeys. At one time he had 24 apprentices indentured to him simultaneously. In one season, seventeen rode winners, three became Champion Flat jockey; five became Champion National Hunt jockey and one of them, Charlie Smirke, went on to ride twenty Classic winners. In 1939, Stanley ceased training in Epsom and concentrated on his breeding operation in Australia, to which he imported such stallions as Noholme and Star Kingdom, who sired the first five Golden Slipper winners. He returned to Epsom in 1950, training again until handing in his licence in 1962, dispersing his horses to former pupils, particularly to the far-famed Staff Ingham. On Staff’s death in 1977, Stanley gave up owning horses altogether and concentrated on his duties as a JP, a director of Kempton Park Racecourse and chairman, at various times, of both the Owners Association and the Trainers Association. Racing’s great benefactor died in 1986. A devout Catholic, he is buried in Epsom, 200 yards from the old family stables at Treadwell. Once dubbed ‘The Emperor of Epsom’, Stanley was ever mindful of how much the town meant to his family, and we, in turn, need to remember how much the sport of kings owe to him to this very day. 24

GEOFF LEWIS

A TRUE EPSOM LEGEND Today at Epsom Downs we remember a true great of the turf in Geoff Lewis, who is commemorated in the Geoff Lewis Handicap Stakes. Geoff, who sadly died last year at the age of 89, was Welsh-born but indelibly linked with Epsom both as a jockey and latterly as a trainer. It was while working as a bellboy at the Waldorf Hotel in London that Geoff was spotted by champion Jump jockey Tim Molony, who suggested to him he was the right size to be a jockey. He was subsequently apprenticed to trainer Ron Smyth in Epsom and rode the ﬁrst of his 1,880 winners in Britain aboard Eastern Imp at Epsom Downs on April 23rd, 1953. Of course, the horse Geoff will always be associated with is Mill Reef, a brilliant winner of the Derby in 1971. Trained at Kingsclere by Ian Balding for ownerbreeder Paul Mellon, Mill Reef won 12 of his 14 starts and was ridden by Geoff throughout his career. Mill Reef’s quartet of victories in the Derby, Eclipse Stakes, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1971 remains a feat unsurpassed. The great horse returned to Epsom Downs in 1972 to land the Coronation Cup. In the year of Mill Reef’s Derby success, Geoff enjoyed a seldom achieved Group One treble at the Derby Festival as he also landed the Oaks aboard Altesse Royale and the Coronation Cup on Lupe. In total, he rode ﬁve British Classic winners, with victory also coming in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket aboard Right Tack (1969) and in the Oaks and 1000 Guineas on Mysterious (1973). Upon his retirement as a jockey in 1979, Geoff successfully turned his hand to training and from his base at Thirty Acre Barn in Epsom he saddled 539 winners during a 20-year career. The best of those included the breathtakingly fast Lake Coniston, the Champion Sprinter of 1995, and Silver Wisp, who was third to Dr Devious in the 1992 Derby. It was a great pleasure to welcome Geoff back to Epsom Downs Racecourse in 2018 when he kindly agreed to conduct the Derby draw alongside fellow Derbywinning rider John Reid. By Ben Cox 25
