Around The Paddock A Simple Guide A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign

Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A ﬁt horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN THE CURRAGH AND MELBOURNE CUP The Curragh has played an important role in Ireland’s long tradition of thoroughbred racing. Its extensive training grounds have helped prepare many horses for major races in Ireland and around the world. One of the most significant international links is with Australia’s famous Melbourne Cup. The connection was strengthened in 1993, when Vintage Crop, trained by legendary Irish trainer Dermot Weld, made history by becoming the first horse trained in Ireland to win the Melbourne Cup. Vintage Crop had won the Irish St Leger at the Curragh just weeks earlier, before travelling to Australia and winning the 3,200-metre race at Flemington. His victory proved that an Irish-trained stayer could succeed in Australia and helped open the Melbourne Cup to international competition. Nine years later, Weld repeated the achievement with Media Puzzle in 2002. The victory was particularly memorable because jockey Damien Oliver rode Media Puzzle just days after the tragic death of his brother Jason. Oliver dedicated the ride to his brother, making the win one of the most emotional moments in Melbourne Cup history

The success of Vintage Crop and Media Puzzle highlights the strong connection between Irish racing, the Curragh and the Melbourne Cup, while also demonstrating the international reputation of Irish-trained stayers. Since their victories, Irish-trained horses have continued to compete successfully in the Melbourne Cup with Joseph O’Brien training two winners with Twilight Payment and Rekindling, while Kildare born jockey Robbie Dolan landed the race in 2024 on board the Australian trained Knight’s Choice The journey from the Curragh to Flemington represents the international nature of modern horse racing and the strong links between Irish and Australian racing.

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them. CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision. HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process. TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

CURRAGH COMMENT After a good run over a mile here on seasonal debut, THYER again ran with credit when third over 1m4f at Galway. Perhaps this intermediate distance will prove ideal for the five-year-old, whose trainer Maurice Ahern does well with a limited amount of runners. CURRAGH COMMENT A BOY NAMED SUSIE only has a debut win at Killarney to his name, but his recent form has been top-class and he is sure to be sent off at prohibitive odds. A fine fourth to Constitution River in the Prix du Jockey Club, he posted another career best when reversing form with Chantilly runner-up Hawk Mountain in the Eclipse at Sandown, which was also won by Constitution River. The ﬁrst thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. RACE SEVEN

Trained on the Curragh, ARMOR SUPREME has shown a high level of ability in three runs in Britain. After a debut win at Goodwood, she was touched off in a Listed contest at York and was last seen when ninth in the Queen Mary. Her four-length defeat on that occasion is strong form, with that Royal Ascot Group 2 working out very well. Grayrobin is on a hat-trick and had Star Prospect (now 5lb better off) back in third when making all at Cork. An impressive debut winner at Naas, Concorde Landed was too free when fourth to a more experienced stablemate in a Listed race at the same venue and may benefit from the application of a hood.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated ﬁve points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight.

RACE EIGHT

Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar ﬁgures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.
