Turning Ireland into a global leader for pancreatic research: It’s very rare that the words “pancreatic cancer” and “good news” are mentioned in the same sentence, but we have a genuine breakthrough to celebrate. Everybody who has supported the Pat Smullen Fund, Cancer Trials Ireland and the Pat Smullen Race Day at the Curragh over the past seven years has helped put Ireland on the map in the ﬁght against pancreatic cancer. Because of that – people in Ireland will get faster access to this breakthrough treatment. It means a lot to me personally – and I hope it means the same to you – that there are families who will have more time together in the future, because of what we are done together since 2019. The Pat Smullen Fund has always been about building a brighter future for people facing pancreatic cancer. I think we are living up to that mission, and that’s down to the strong support of the horse racing community, and the people in Ireland are aﬀected by pancreatic cancer. Thank you for your support – and please keep on supporting us. There’s a lot more work to be done, more trials to open, more lives to improve. We want to keep on building a brighter future. There has been a major breakthrough – researchers have been able to develop a treatment that target the main mutation (RAS) in patients with pancreatic cancer. This new drug is called Daraxonrasib. It was evaluated in a phase III randomised clinical trial. The trial involved patients with advanced pancreatic cancer who had already received chemotherapy, but whose cancer had progressed (what we call ‘second line’ treatment). The patients on the trial received either the standard treatment for pancreatic cancer at this stage or their disease, or this new drug, Daraxonrasib. What we saw was that the new drug doubled survival. And we’re now seeing this treatment move even earlier. It is being tested as a ﬁrst treatment for people diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer, either with chemotherapy or on its own, and the results so far are very promising. What we ultimately believe is that all patients with pancreatic cancer – whether you have a cancer that is considered resectable (treatable with surgery), or a cancer that is locally advanced, or a cancer that is advanced - will be receiving KRAS inhibitors at the outset in the near future. As of today, we do not have access to the drugs. And we are all very excited about being able to use this therapy for our patients. But we are going to have clinical trials. We’re going to have trials with this drug and other KRAS inhibitors. And that is because we now have an ecosystem in Ireland where we are able to deliver clinical trials, where our partners in pharmaceutics are going to come to us to be able to deliver these trials for our patients. And ultimately, that is down to this community who have been raising awareness of clinical trials and who have been supporting physicians to treat pancreatic cancer in Ireland. This is probably the most historic moment for patients with pancreatic cancer, for patients in the future who are going to get pancreatic cancer, for caregivers, for physicians, we are now entering an absolute new era for treating patients with this disease. The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. CURRAGH COMMENT GREAT BARRIER REEF comes here after being taken out at Deauville last Sunday and can make a winning return after a little break. The No Nay Never colt was last seen completing a hat-trick in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. He still looked a touch green then, drifting left when on his own in the centre, and there could be further improvement to come. Velozee looks the obvious threat, getting a nice chunk of weight. She ran a fine race to finish third behind Sun Goddess in the Phoenix Stakes over C&D earlier in the month. Livenka was a cosy winner of the valuable Ballyhane Stakes at Naas and deserves a shot at this level.

CURRAGH COMMENT English runner MISS SCOTT has a smart pedigree and has progressed well in four career starts. By a top stallion and a half-sister to two Listed winners, she herself finished runner-up at Listed level at Salisbury earlier this month, with the third-placed filly having previously contested the French Oaks. The Gosdens’ three-year-old likes this distance and handles somewhat easy ground. Faiyum has disappointed on two runs this year but is nonetheless able, while Sindria drops in grade after contesting a Group 3 in June. CURRAGH COMMENT HARDY WARRIOR was a smart juvenile and ran well in a recent Listed race. Runner-up to Irish Derby winner Benvenuto Cellini last September before finishing fourth in a Group 1, the Pinatubo colt ran well in a Galway handicap in July and was a fast-finishing third at Killarney last week. He should continue to progress and will be fine on softening ground. Pierre Royal finished second in that Galway race, with Irish Lincolnshire winner Ribee in fifth, and both are capable handicappers. Manton Bay is hindered by a 7lb penalty for a recent success, while stablemate Slieve Binnian would prefer a sound surface. Popular top-weight Big Gossey has had another excellent year, but has never won at a mile.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT APOTHIC RED steps up in grade having finished second at Sligo, but should be competitive. Although well held in maidens, he wasn’t beaten far behind prolific winner Meriden here in April and ran well under a big weight at Sligo. He has been raised 2lb, but his jockey claims 7lb and he gets the nod. Naoi hit the back of the net at Leopardstown, but is effectively 9lb higher as his same rider is unable to utilise his 5lb claim. Rosato is 4lb higher and without her rider’s 5lb claim having finished second over C&D last week. Faoladh tries this trip for the first time.

Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The ﬁrst thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. AVA BOURKE Ava is from Tipperary and grew up riding ponies before she transitioned to racehorses and is currently riding out for Willie Mullins this summer. Ava is riding in the charity race because cancer is something that affects everyone, with many of her family members being diagnosed in the past. When she got the opportunity to ride in the race, she was delighted to be able to give back to such an incredible charity in memory of Pat Smullen. EIMEAR BROWNE From Meath originally but living in Roscommon for the last 20 years. Riding in the charity race is fulﬁlling a childhood dream. Eimear decided to get back into the saddle after a 20-year absence to ride in the race. Eimear has been getting race ready by riding out for Paul Flynn and for her cousin Gavin Cromwell. The work of Cancer Trials Ireland is very personal to Eimear as she has lost a lot of family members to cancer. She is also riding for her friend Suzy Breen who is going through her own cancer journey. NINA CARBERRY Meath native and Fine Gael MEP for Midlands North-West, Nina is known in racing circles for her stellar career on the track, including an Irish Grand National victory and multiple Cheltenham successes. Nina is dusting off her boots to ride in the charity race to continue Pat Smullen’s legacy to support the vital work of Cancer Trials Ireland and raise life-saving funds for pancreatic cancer research and clinical trials. Nina is excited to get back in the saddle for such a worthy cause. DAISY MAY CHRISTIE Daisy May is making the trip from Northamptonshire in England to ride in the charity race. She is inspired to take part for such a brilliant cause and in honour of her aunt who successfully went through her own cancer journey a number of years ago. Daisy Mae is excited to ride at such an iconic racecourse for a cause so close to so many people’s hearts.

ROSIN CONWAY Rosin, from Offaly, was inspired to take part in the race in memory of her Grandad and his brother who passed away from cancer. Their family’s strong connection to racing and their horses, which Pat Smullen rode, felt a fitting link for Roisin to honour them and raise money for cancer research. Rosin has been riding out six days a week for trainer Eddie Power. Rosin feels very honoured to ride on such an important day and hopes to ride in the silks connected to her grandfather’s syndicate. JOHN ENNIS John, a racehorse trainer, originally from Longwood in Co Meath, now living in Lexington in Kentucky is riding in the race in honour of his cousin who passed away from cancer last year, leaving a young family behind. Padraig Roche, John’s friend from his Curragh days is providing his horse and he is looking forward to come back the Curragh Racecourse to ride in such an important race for an amazing charity like Cancer Trials Ireland. FRANCIS FAGAN Francis from Kildare Town, was encouraged to ride in the race by his friend and former jockey Michael Hussey and is riding in memory of his friend who passed away from cancer four years ago. Francis is riding in the race with his brother Owen for a bit of support and competitive spirit. He has been riding out with Peter Fahey as much as possible and is enjoying getting back into riding after 25 years for such an important charity like Cancer Trials Ireland. OWEN FAGAN Owen, from Kildare town, works for Juddmonte Farms who Pat Smullen regularly rode for, so the charity race is a cause close to his heart. Owen’s brother Francis is also riding in the race and despite having a very competitive spirit, he would be delighted to see his brother do well, as it’s his first time to ride on a racecourse. Owen is getting fit for the race with his own racehorse and Connemara ponies he and his son have at home and will ride in the race for Joseph O’Brien. TOM FOLEY Tom, from Nenagh, County Tipperary, works in regenerative medicine and is passionate about medical research and finding cures for cancer. A former weigh room colleague of Pat Smullen, Tom is very passionate about being part of Pat’s legacy to raise money for Cancer Trials Ireland. Having previously been a professional jockey for 17 years in the US and Japan, he is excited to return to the saddle for such an important cause, which affects so many families and households.

MAX HART From County Wickow, the Pat Smullen charity race was the inspiration for Max to learn how to ride a racehorse. Since January he has been riding for Gordon Elliott, learning the basics and building up his ﬁtness and riding skills. Max’s grandparents have battled and continue to battle cancer, so he is taking part in the race to raise money for an incredible cause that supports vital cancer research and patient care.

TARA HAYES Tara from the Curragh, is riding in the race for her aunt, who battled cancer a few years ago. She is also motivated by friends whose parents have been affected by the disease, so she is keen to support cancer research. Tara has been working for Jessica Harrington for the last three years while completing her biomedical degree. Tara is balancing excitement with a few nerves but is looking forward to an amazing day.

TADHG MCGUINESS From Lusk in County Dublin, Tadhg is taking part in the race in memory his two uncles who passed away from cancer. He is also following in the footsteps of his sister Aisling, who took part in the race in 2024. It means a lot to Tadhg to raise money for such a good cause. Tadhg works full-time, alongside his dad Ado McGuinness, so he is riding out every day and getting great advice and tips from his dad and stable jockey Adam Caffrey. ORLA MCKENNA Orla, from Collon in County Louth, has followed the charity race for several years and previously took part in the charity cycle before deciding to ride in the charity race. Orla got the bug for riding in races when she competed in the Corinthian Challenge for Irish Injured Jockeys. Orla is currently riding out for Gavin Cromwell four mornings a week. Orla is grateful for the support from Gavin, his owners, Keith Donoghue, Gary Carroll and all staff in Gavin’s yard. ALEX O’CONNOR Alex O’Connor is from Dublin and is friends with Paddy Smullen through pony camp, so the charity race has always been something he has wanted to do, to support Paddy and the great fundraising and awareness his mum and sisters have championed for Cancer Trials Ireland. He has been riding out for Ian Donoghue and Dermot Weld and feels really privileged to ride in the race for such an important cause. ANNIE O’NEILL Annie is from Ballymore Eustace in Kildare and is taking part in the charity race to support family members currently battling cancer and to support the great work of Cancer Trials Ireland. Annie has been riding out most days for Cormac Farrell and has received plenty of helpful advice and tips from the lads in the yard. This will be Annie’s first-time riding on the track, and she is excited and grateful for the special opportunity. JANE O’SULLIVAN Jane, from Rathfarnham in Dublin, is taking part in memory of her uncle, who died from cancer in December 2024. She feels the race is a meaningful way to honour his memory while also celebrating Pat Smullen’s legacy and raising funds for an incredible cause like Cancer Trials Ireland. Jane only rode her first racehorse in January and has been riding out at Gordon Elliott’s yard, getting great advice and support from the yard. Her focus for race day is to stay calm, enjoy the experience and soak up the special atmosphere. Lisa has been riding horses since she was 19 and rides out for Charles O’Brien two days a week, while looking after her two young children.
