Welcome to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to you all on the occasion of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

This year marks our 19th year as title sponsor of the Irish Derby, and our 25th year of association with The Curragh Racecourse. This year also marks the 161st running of this famous race, which remains Ireland’s richest race and is a highlight of the summer sporting season.

Since we were last at The Curragh, Dubai Duty Free celebrated its 42nd Anniversary on 20th December 2025 and ended the year with record annual sales of US$2.378 billion. This represents a 9.85% increase over 2024 and places Dubai Duty Free in 5th position amongst the global airport retail operators in terms of turnover.

2026 began on a high note, with record monthly sales achieved in both January and February. From March onwards, the conflict in the region has severely impacted our business, though May has been much better than the previous months.

We have also continued investing in the customer experience at Dubai International Airport, including the opening of a Louis Vuitton and a Cartier boutique in Terminal 3’s Concourse A, which opened in September 2025. In addition, a new Gifts from Dubai shop opened in March 2026.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Blue-blooded ALPHA ran notably well on debut earlier this month. By Sea The Stars and out of top racemare Alpha Centauri, the Aidan O’Brien-trained youngster showed inexperience when missing the break, but was a strong finisher and looks sure to improve Livenka hasn’t raced since being well touted for her Naas introduction in April, when she ran well in a hot maiden won by last week’s Queen Mary winner Victorious. CURRAGH COMMENT

GAZELLE D’OR has joint-top weight in a competitive handicap, but has good form lines and is suited by conditions. Initially rated just 70, she has progressed really well and got closest to Mission Central at Naas last month, prior to that horse winning the King Charles III at Royal Ascot last week. Likedbymike was herself beaten less than a length by Mission Central in April and although she finished a close second in a recent Listed race at Cork, she has a fraction to find with the selection on that Naas meeting in May Erosandpsyche finished third in the aforementioned Cork race, while English runner Toca Madera scored very easily at Doncaster but is now 11lb higher

TANGO FLARE is better suited by today’s likely good ground than regular rival and fan favourite Big Gossey, and comes here in good form. The pair have raced against each other nine times and while the selection was beaten in the first seven meetings, he has finished ahead the last twice and scored over this trip at Fairyhouse recently Veteran nine-time course winner Big Gossey is holding his form very well and finished second in the Greenlands here last month. PURVIEW can take another step up the ladder after a couple of Listed wins. He was very impressive on his return to action here last month in the Orby Stakes and looks to have really blossomed as a four-year-old. That came over 1m4f but dropping back a couple of furlongs shouldn’t be an issue for Dermot Weld’s colt. On ratings, Hotazhell is the danger and the Group 1 winner commands plenty of respect. He looked like he had come to win his race last time at Navan but ran around in the closing stages and was nabbed late on by Isaac Newton. Cheekpieces are fitted now and he can reverse that form.

This looks like a nice opportunity for ALCANTOR to get back to winning ways. The New Bay entire was placed in the French Guineas a couple of years ago and has some high-class form. He ran a solid enough race when fourth on his debut for Joseph O’Brien at Leopardstown and 7f may have been a bit sharp for him behind subsequent Queen Anne hero Ten Bob Tony last time at Epsom. Tokenomics was in front of the selection at Leopardstown last month, when chasing home Catalina Delcarpio He’s a solid performer and is an obvious danger Duckadilly won at this level in Navan three weeks ago and is another for the shortlist.

The first year of sponsorship by Dubai Duty Free of the Irish Derby yielded a familiar result, with the Aidan O’Brien-trained Frozen Fire running out the 16/1 winner under Seamie Heffernan.

Fame And Glory went one better at the Curragh than at Epsom, winning cosily under Johnny Murtagh by a five length margin. Settled into mid-division, Fame And Glory stretched away a furlong from the finish to win comfortably.

A talented son of Galileo, Cape Blanco made it five in a row for Aidan O’Brien when seeing off stablemates Midas Touch and Jan Vermeer to run out a half length winner and land back to back renewals of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby for Johnny Murtagh.

Treasure Beach was only beaten a head at Epsom but made amends at the Curragh, winning in the hands of Colm O’Donoghue. He led home a Ballydoyle 1-2-3, with Seville and Memphis Tennessee rounding out the placings.

Camelot made it five races in a row and maintained his unbeaten record when winning as 1/5 favourite under Joseph O’Brien, marking a first Irish Derby for the rider.

He saw off four rivals to win cosily and maintain his reputation as a leading colt.

It was up to Jim Bolger to halt the period of Ballydoyle dominance, and Trading Leather did so in 2013.

A winner of the Silver Stakes on his previous win, he got the better of Galileo Rock, Festive Cheer and Ruler Of The World to win the 2013 renewal.

One of the best winners of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, Australia was imperious and made it an Epsom-Curragh double when winning as 1/8 favourite under Joseph O’Brien. He made it another 1-2-3 for Ballydoyle, with Kingfisher and Orchestra in behind.

Behind Golden Horn at Epsom, Jack Hobbs showed his class to win the 2015 renewal of the race under William Buick for John Gosden and the Godolphin team. He became the first British-trained winner since Balanchine in 1994.

A fine winner under Pat Smullen, Harzand backed up his dominant Epsom victory by winning cosily to give Dermot Weld his first winner of the race since Grey Swallow in 2004, was also ridden to victory by Pat Smullen.

Capri showed grit and determination to turn round the form from Epsom and come out on top in a blanket finish under Seamie Heffernan. Delivered late, he beat Cracksman into second and Epsom winner Wings Of Eagles into third.

A first Classic winner for Joseph O’Brien as a trainer, and a first Irish Classic winner for brother Donnacha in the saddle, Latrobe improved from his course and distance maiden win to see off Rostropovich and the talented Saxon Warrior.

A surprise winner of the 2019 renewal, Sovereign was most impressive when making all under Padraig Beggy to see off Epsom winner Anthony Van Dyck and six other rivals by a wide six length margin. 2019

A comfortable winner at Royal Ascot, Santiago was backed up quickly and just held off the late surge of stablemate Tiger Moth to record another Classic winner for Seamie Heffernan and Aidan O’Brien.

Hurricane Lane ran a brilliant race at Epsom in defeat before taking victory in the 2021 classic. Frankie Dettori looked as though he may have stolen victory from the front, but Buick would not be denied and under an excellent drive ran Lone Eagle down in the shadows of the post.

Colin Keane gave Westover an uncomplicated ride when winning his first Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. Like Hurricane lane in 2021, he had been a strong finisher in the Epsom equivalent and ran home an impressive winner at the Curragh. In doing so, he made it back-to-back winners for Britain. 2024

Auguste Rodin joined an illustrious list of nineteen horses to do the English-Irish Derby double. Sent off 4/9, he obliged in a workman like performance to eventually reel in the pace setter Adelaide River. It was a professional performance that ended a recent string of British winners.

Los Angeles made it a fifth win for Aidan O’Brien in the last 10 years after showing a determined attitude under Ryan Moore to hold off Ambiente Friendly and the fast finishing Sunway.

A Ballydoyle first and second was led home by Epsom Derby winner Lambourn. Who became the twentieth horse win at both Epsom and the Curragh.

History

2026

2026 will mark the 161st running of the Irish Derby. This is the 19th year of sponsorship of Ireland’s flagship race by Dubai Duty Free.

The first running of the race in 1866 saw the English raider Selim (5/4) beat the even-money favourite Tom King by three lengths with Fire Eater back in third There were only three runners. Back then, the Irish Derby was run on the second day of a four-day meeting and Selim won on each day. He had a walk-over on the first day, the day after the Irish Derby he again beat Tom King in the three-mile Queen’s Plate and on the final day he won over four miles. Selim was bred by Dublin sports writer D. Kinsella and was owned by Englishman James Cockin who was based at Hednesford in Staffordshire and made frequent raids on Irish races.

In its first six years the Irish Derby was run over a mile-andthree-quarters, but from 1872 onwards it has taken place over the traditional distance of a mile-and-a-half.

FemaleTrainers

The Irish Derby has never been won by a horse representing a female trainer. The Jessica Harrington-trained Green Impact was the latest one to attempt to break the hoodoo in the 2025 renewal.

British Challengers

British runners have enjoyed limited success in the Irish Derby, with the race heading back to Britain a total of 12 times. Shergar was one of the more famous winners for Sir Michael Stoute. While Westover was the most recent winner back in 2022 for Ralph Beckett.

The biggest ever British raiding party was in 1996 when a nine-strong British team came up short behind the Dermot Weld-trained Zagreb.

Maidens

The last maiden to win the Irish Derby was Sindon in 1958, trained by Michael Dawson in Ireland and ridden by Liam Ward.

French Challengers

Pardal, third in 1950, was the first French runner in the race. He was owned by Marcel Boussac and ridden by Rae Johnstone. French-trained horses have won the Irish Derby eight times in all including four victories in the last 31 years, namely; Hurricane Run in 2005, his sire Montjeu in 1999, Dream Well in 1998 and Winged Love in 1995. Malacate (1976), Irish Ball (1971), Prince Regent (1969) and Tambourine (1962) were the others.

RecordTime

The fastest winning time in the Derby was registered by St Jovite in 1992 when Jim Bolger’s brilliant colt came home in a time of 2 min 25.6 sec, which smashed the previous record of 2 min 28.8 sec set by Tambourine II in 1962.

Smallest/ LargestFields

The smallest ever field was in 1868 when Madeira defeated his sole rival, Bee Quick, by six lengths. Madeira only ran twice after his Irish Derby win where he was beaten on successive days at Bellewstown!

1962 witnessed the biggest ever turnout for the race as Tambourine II saw off 23 rivals to become the first ever French-trained winner of the race.

2012 and 2014 saw the joint smallest fields since 1912, with just four rivals taking their chances against the Derby heroes Camelot and Australia respectively.

DeadHeats

Only twice has the result of the Irish Derby come down to a dead heat and on both occasions the horses involved have been English-trained raiders. Haine and Zodiac shared the honours in 1924, while 10 years later Patriot King and Primero were inseparable passing the post.

Most Successful Jockey

Morny Wing is the most successful jockey in the Irish Derby, recording six victories between 1921 and 1946. Steve Donoghue and Lester Piggott both won five. Seamus Heffernan is the most successful current licenced jockey with four wins in the race. Ryan Moore moved to three wins last year.

MostSuccessfulOwners

The 2016 victory of Harzand saw the late Aga Khan IV overtake his grandfather His Highness the Aga Khan III as the most successful individual owner in the history of the race with what was his sixth success. The latter had his colours carried to victory five times between 1925 and 1949, while Shergar gave the present Aga Khan his first success in 1981 and was followed by Shahrastani (1986), Kahyasi (1988), Sinndar (2000), Alamshar (2003) and the aforementioned Harzand (2016). Mind, that title could well be disputed as various combinations of the Coolmore partners, namely John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, have owned 18 winners of the race in the last 29 years. Indeed, since 2014, they have teamed up seven times to win.

WinningSiblings

The last siblings to win the race were Ribocco in 1967 and his full-brother Ribero in 1968 Both horses were trained in England by Fulke Johnson-Houghton, ridden by Lester Piggott and owned by Charles Engelhard.

BeatenFrenchDerby Runners

Cape Blanco was the last horse to be beaten in the French Derby (Prix du Jockey Club) before winning the Irish Derby in 2010. He is not alone in showing improved form here at the Curragh as five years earlier, Hurricane Run finished second in the Prix du Jockey Club before triumphing in the Irish Derby as favourite. In 1995, Winged Love improved from his third place at Chantilly to capture Ireland’s premier Classic.

LeadingSire

Another jointly held title, the accolade of the most successful sire in the race is held by Gallinule, Sadler’s Wells and the perennial Galileo – three giants of their time. Gallinule produced six winners between 1895 and 1901, while Sadler’s Wells got off the mark with Old Vic in 1989. The following year his daughter Salsabil won before Dream Well in 1998, Montjeu in 1999, Galileo in 2001 and High Chaparral in 2002. Sovereign’s 2019 win saw Galileo join Gallinule and Sadler’s Wells as the leading sire of the race with six winners.

In 1907, Orby was the first horse to attempt the English-Irish Derby double and he duly obliged, with his starting price of 1/10 making him the shortest ever priced winner of the Classic. The shortest priced horse in the race since then was Australia at 1/8 in the 2014 renewal.

Zarathustra is the longest-priced winner, prevailing at 50/1 in 1954. Ridden by Paddy Powell and trained by Michael Hurley, he had finished fifth in the Irish 2000 GuineasbuthadrunbadlyintheGallinuleStakesonhis previous start.

BeatenEpsomRunnersInRecentYears

Sovereign in 2019 joined Frozen Fire in 2008 and Soldier of Fortune in 2007 to finished unplaced at Epsom before triumphing in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. Sovereign was tenth, while Soldier of Fortune was fifth at Epsom and Frozen Fire was only 11th. 2017 winner Capri finished 6th at Epsom before winning at the Curragh. Previous to that duo, the last horse to win the Irish Derby after having been unplaced at Epsom was Tyrnavos (12th at Epsom) who caused a 25/1 shock on soft ground in 1980.

Others who were placed at Epsom before triumphing at the Curragh recently were 2024 winner Los Angeles (third at Epsom), 2022 Westover (third at Epsom), 2021 Hurricane Lane (third at Epsom), Jack Hobbs (second at Epsom) in 2015, Treasure Beach (second at Epsom) in 2011, Fame and Glory (second at Epsom) in 2009, Dylan Thomas (third at Epsom) in 2006, Alamshar (third at Epsom) in 2003, St Jovite (second at Epsom) in 1992, Sir Harry Lewis (fourth at Epsom) in 1987, Law Society (second at Epsom) in 1985 and the great El Gran Senor (second at Epsom) in 1984.

St Jovite’s win was unusual in that he turned the tables on his Epsom conqueror Dr Devious, finishing two lengths second to him at Epsom prior to inflicting a 12-length defeat on him at the Curragh.

Fillies’Record

Only 10 fillies’ have won the race since it’s inception and the first of these came in 1871. Maid Of Athens won only the sixth race since it’s inception and the following year Trickstress made it two from two for the fillies. Gallinaria made it winner number eight but the next filly to win didn’t come until 1990 in the form of Salsabil. She was quickly followed by Balanchine in 1994.

If success in the future is influenced by what has happened in the past, then a scan through the breeding and breeders of this year’s Group One Irish Derby field offers plenty of pedigree pointers to 1m4f middle-distance Classic.

Coolmore has bred the last three winners of the race, and this year has two homebreds entered, both by Frankel – Benvenuto Cellini, produced in partnership with Peter Brandt’s White Birch Farm, and Action.

Benvenuto Cellini is out of the two-time Grade One winner Newspaperofrecord, a daughter of Lope De Vega. The family boasts a smart Irish Derby connection –Benvenuto Cellini’s granddam Sunday Times (Holy Roman Emperor) is a half-sister to the dam of the Irish Derby winner Latrobe, who won in 2018 for Joseph O’Brien. Action, runner-up in the 1m2f Dante Stakes (G2), is the third foal out of the Scat Daddy mare Gossamer Wings and is a half-brother to last year’s Epsom and Irish Derby star winner, Lambourn.

Frankel is already the sire of two Irish Derby winners – Westover (2022) and Hurricane Lane (2021).

The Gilltown Stud stallion Sea The Stars, winner of the Epsom Derby in 2009, has sired one Irish Derby winner – Harzand in 2016.

The stallion has strong chances of adding to the tally with Shadwell Stud’s homebred Raaheeb

The colt is a brother to the dual European champion and Shadwell Stud stallion Baaeed, a six-time Group One winner with his last victory coming over 1m2f, and to Hukum, twice a winner over 1m4f at Group 1 level.

This year’s Epsom Derby (G1) winner Christmas Day, bred by Stephen and Becky Hillen’s Framont Ltd, is by the 2012 Irish Derby winner Camelot, already sire of two Irish Derby winners – the aforementioned Latrobe and Los Angeles, who won in 2024.

The colt’s dam Beauly (Sea The Stars) won at Listed level over a mile in the US and finished an unlucky fourth in the 1m2f Grade One Flower Bowl Stakes.

Bred by leading British breeder Anita Wigan, James J Braddock, a son of the leading French sire Zarak, winner of the 1m4f Group One Grand Prix de SaintCloud, finished third in the Epsom Derby The colt is out of the 1m2f-winning mare Burkino Faso (Mukhadram) and is from the extended family of the Deutsches Derby-winning half-brothers Boreal and Borgia.

Pierre Bonnard, by Camelot, was bred by County Kildare-based farm Rathasker Stud out of the New Approach mare Sultanina, winner of the 1m2f Group 1 Nassau Stakes and the 1m4f Pinnacle Stakes (G3), and dam of Crepe Suzette, who has been stakes placed over 1m2f and 1m6f

Out of the Green Desert mare Kykuit, Bunyola Bay was bred by Kildaragh Stud in County Kildare Most of the form in the family is over 7f and a mile, and traces to some of Coolmore’s star milers of the past – Footstepsinthesand, Curvy and Power

Ghayyaith, though, is sire of two international Derby winners – Observer, winner of the 1m4f Victoria Derby (G1) at Flemington, and The Padre, who won the Del Mar Derby (G2) run over 1m2f.

The Sunderlands Holdings-bred Shaihaan is by the champion sire Night Of Thunder out of the Sea The Stars mare Sea Of Faith, a French Listed winner over 1m4f She is an own-sister to Raheen House, a Group Three winner over 1m5f, and to the two-mile Group One Sydney Cup winner Shraaoh.

It is the extended family of the Epsom Derby winner Nashwan, and traces to the same Shadwell family as Raheeb

OVERVIEW

The Irish Derby is Ireland’s most prestigious Classic race for three-year-olds. Run at the Curragh over one mile and four furlongs, the Group 1 contest takes place each summer, usually in late June or early July, and attracts many of the leading middle-distance horses from across Europe

First staged in 1866, the race was established by some of Ireland’s most influential racing figures and has grown into one of the highlights of the international flat racing calendar The Irish Derby gained further prominence during the 1960s when increased prize money helped attract top-class runners, including winners of the Epsom Derby

Today, the race forms the centrepiece of the Curragh’s Irish Derby Festival. A notable feature of its history is the EnglishIrish Derby double, a feat achieved by some of the sport’s greatest names and more recently completed by Lambourn in 2025.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

The first three home at Epsom renewed their rivalry at the Curragh for the first time since 2013, when Derby hero Ruler Of The World, runner-up Libertarian and third-placed Galileo Rock were all turned over by Trading Leather in the Irish equivalent. This time, however, the Epsom form stood firm, with the placings remaining unchanged as Lambourn completed an illustrious Derby double.

In doing so, Lambourn became the sixth colt trained by Aidan O’Brien to win both the Derby and Irish Derby, joining an elite roll of honour that includes Auguste Rodin (2023), Australia (2014), Camelot (2012), High Chaparral (2002) and Galileo (2001).

CURRAGH COMMENT

Aidan O’Brien retains the faith in BENVENUTO CELLINI and he can leave behind a disappointing, and controversial, ‘non-run’ at Epsom. The Frankel colt had his leg up on the side of the stalls as they opened and, after missing the kick as a result, finished well beaten after being hampered as well. The soft ground that day may not have been ideal either and, on better going now, the impressive Chester Vase winner can show his true colours. Derby winner Christmas Day looks a real out-and-out galloper and stamina is his forte He could play a big role again, while Epsom third James J Braddock also has to be respected, especially given his antics pre-race Raaheeb is the unknown quantity in the race and a potential improver trying this trip for the first time

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

ANTIGUA produced a fine front-running performance when winning his maiden at Fairyhouse earlier in the month and looks capable of following up now sent into handicaps. The Camelot colt had produced a couple of solid efforts previously and the combination of blinkers and a tongue-tie seemed to work well last time Bobby McGee has had a terrific season to date, completing a hat-trick at Naas last month. He has a bit more on his plate now but is respected nonetheless. How’sthebai was a cosy winner at Leopardstown last time and is another to consider, despite a 9lb hike for that victory

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

FACTUAL FACT can land this valuable prize The Authorized gelding clipped heels and stumbled shortly after the start here last time and he raced keenly as a result. He pulled his way to the front, but still looked the likely winner when kicking a few lengths clear passing the two-furlong marker Poetic Sound wore him down eventually, but it was a fine run given the circumstances and dropping back in trip should be no problem.
