WELCOME TO DAY 2 OF LONGINES IRISH CHAMPIONS WEEKEND It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Curragh for the second day of Longines Irish Champions Weekend. This year’s event carries a special significance. Since the beginning of this week, Irish racecourses have been permitted to increase their capacity as Covid-19 restrictions begin to ease across the country and the first significant spectator attendances at Irish racecourses in almost 18 months were permitted at Leopardstown yesterday and here this afternoon. A year ago, this meeting was one of so many held behind closed doors. The absence of telling numbers of owners, racecourse members, sponsors and racegoers alike has been keenly felt for far too long. It means so much to us all that the turnstiles are spinning once again. I would like to reiterate how proud Irish racing can be of its response to the pandemic. But while a return to normality is fast approaching, everyone must be mindful that some restrictions remain as we look ahead to a wonderful day’s racing. No other day’s racing in Ireland features four Group 1 races. The Comer Group International Irish St Leger is the final Classic of the 2021 season, the Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes is our flagship sprint event and established as two of the best juvenile races on the European calendar are the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes. A terrific afternoon awaits and I trust that you all have a day at the races to remember. Welcome back to the Curragh.

YOUNG DESIGNER AWARD 12th Sept 2021 The Curragh We are delighted to introduce the inaugural Longines Irish Champions Weekend Young Designer Award. From over 50 entries three ﬁnalists have been chosen and they will showcase their designs today at The Curragh. The overall winner will be chosen and announced by our panel of judges which includes Courtney Smith, Rebecca Dore (EVOKE) and RoxAnne Tierney (Longines). The winner will receive a prize to the value of €10,000 including a Longines timepiece.

What to expect at the Curragh for Longines Irish Champions Weekend Day 2: Gates Open 11am. Live Music from 11-5.30pm will be situated throughout the racecourse. There will be a Parade of Champions in the Parade Ring from 12.30pm, this will be made up of multiple Grade 1 winners Faugheen, Hurricane Fly, Douvan and Hardy Eustace. At 1pm will see a panel of experts taking part in the Winning Line from the Parade Ring where they will go through the card for the day and discuss each race in detail. Racing starts at 1.45pm for an eight race card including 4 Group 1 races and the last Classic of the season will take place until 5.45 pm. The Longines Young Designer Award has been running virtually and three finalists have been selected from a large volume of entries. The winner for this prestigious award will be announced in the parade ring at 3.45pm. Like a tourist in a foreign country, the novice racegoer soon picks up enough of the language to get by, and then rapidly becomes fluent. Here are some of the most common racing terms you are likely to hear when you are racing. Brush up on them and you will sound like a seasoned professional in no time! ALLOWANCE

DISTANCE

The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience.

The length of a race.

ANTE-POST

Describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls.

Betting (usually for the most important races) days or even months before the race is due to take place.

APPRENTICE Young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while they are learning.

BACKWARD Young horse which needs time to mature.

CLERK OF THE COURSE Official in charge of running the racing programme, at the Curragh it is Brendan Sheridan.

CLERK OF THE SCALES Key in the delivery of a successful racing operation. Their job is to check that the horses in each race carry the correct weights.

COLOURS The racing silks worn by the jockeys.

COLT Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old.

CONNECTIONS The owner and trainer of a racehorse.

DAM

DRAW FILLY Female horse up to four years old.

FOAL Horse of either sex 1 January the following year.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 14

It is not a race and we plan to stay in a large group as best we can (averaging 26-29k per hour).

He raised so muchmoney for Cancer Trials Ireland that it only seems right to make a small effort to raise some more money for such a brilliant cause. PARADE OF CHAMPIONS We are delighted to welcome a host of racing royalty to the Curragh today at 12:30pm for a parade of champions, a celebration of racing icons as they live life to the full off the track.

FAUGHEEN

Dubbed “The Machine”, Willie Mullins’ star hurdler graced the track on 26 occasions, winning 17 of those runs. His first big win came in the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival, after which he was dropped in trip to win another Grade 1, this time at Punchestown. Kept to the minimum trip over hurdles, he won at Ascot and Kempton before winning the Champion Hurdle at the 2015 Cheltenham Festival, after which he again followed up at Punchestown. More Grade 1’s followed in 2016, but a disappointing run at Cheltenham in 2018 saw him upped to three miles at Punchestown, which he saw out superbly to win the Champion Stayers Hurdle. Sent chasing at the ripe old age of 11, he won two Grade 1’s over the bigger obstacles before finishing a fine third in the Marsh Novices’ Chase at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival.

HURRICANE FLY Very few non-humans have held world records. Hurricane Fly is one of those. A dual winner of the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, he won his first in 2011 and when winning in 2013 he became the first horse in 38 years to regain his title. In November 2013 he won the Morgiana Hurdle, a victory which saw him become the world record holder for most Grade 1 (or Group 1) races won by any racehorse. In total, his record stands at an astonishing 26 wins from 42 races , including four Punchestown Champion Hurdles, one Hatton’s Grace Hurdle, four Matheson Hurdles, three Morgiana Hurdles, two Champion Hurdles and five Irish Champion Hurdles. A generational talent, Hurricane Fly now lives at the Irish National Stud.

HARDY EUSTACE

A whirlwind talent for force of nature Dessie Hughes, Hardy Eustace won twice on jumps racing’s biggest stage, winning two Champion Hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival. His racing career stretched long past those Cheltenham triumphs. He was a regular in the Ascot Hurdle, a race which he won twice in 2006 and 2007, and he landed the Irish Champion Hurdle in 2017. He continued to run admirably consistently even in the latter stages of his career and even ran a few times at the Curragh, finishing sixth in a handicap under Richard Hughes in 2006 and finishing 11th in the Irish Cesarewitch in 2007 under then three pound claimer Padraig Beggy.

DOUVAN

A high-class novice hurdler, an even better novice chaser and a superstar two miler, Douvan had the world at his feet. His electric turn of foot left all his rivals toiling in his wake over fences and over the minimum trip he was often a dream ride for Ruby Walsh. Twice a winner at the Cheltenham Festival, in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the Arkle Novices’ Chase, Douvan’s streak of 13 wins in a row was broken at Cheltenham in March 2017 when he sustained an injury in the Champion Chase. Although he recovered, he never fully regained his best form and was retired after a string of injuries. An athletic horse with tremendous size and scope, he was built for chasing, and if luckier with injuries who knows how high he could have flown. He will be fondly remembered by racing fans.

CHURCHILL

2016 GOFFS VINCENT O’BRIEN NATIONAL STAKES WINNER

Another star winner of the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes for Ballydoyle, Churchill saw off the talented Mehmas to win the 2016 renewal comfortably under Ryan Moore, making it three wins in a row for Aidan O’Brien, following on from Gleneagles and Air Force Blue.

CURRAGH TRAINER PROFILE Eddie & Patrick Harty Father and son Eddie & Patrick Harty are based out of Mulgrave Lodge on The Curragh, they became the first joint licence holders in Ireland earlier this year. Eddie has been training on The Curragh since 2004 and has trained many talented horses including Captain Cee Bee who won at The Cheltenham Festival and holds the record as the oldest winner at the Curragh at 12 years old. Other talented horses trained by them include Coney Island, Dressedtothenines, Princeton Plains and Baron De’L who won 6 times at the Curragh including the Alleged Stakes. Patrick spent five years working as assistant to leading UK National Hunt trainer Nicky Henderson before coming back to Ireland and working with his father. A dual purpose yard, in recent years the Harty duo have increased their flat string which has proved a successful move with winners each season. We wish them both continued success. 22

CURRAGH COMMENT A fiercely competitive sprint handicap to kick things off, in which class dropper POWER UNDER ME gets the nod. Ger Lyons’ consistent gelding has run well in Group company on his last three starts and he looks dangerous off a mark of 105 on his handicap return. BOLD LAD The first race today honours the great Bold Lad. Trained by Paddy Prendergast, Bold Lad began his career in 1966 by winning the Youngsters Stakes in Ireland and was then sent to Royal Ascot to contest the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in which he defeated a field which included Royal Palace. He won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster defeating the previously unbeaten Ribocco, after which Prendergast described him as the best two-year-old he had ever trained, including Windy City. In September he won the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket. In the Free Handicap, a ranking of the season’s best juveniles, he was rated three pounds clear of runner-up Royal Palace giving him Champion honors in Ireland and England. Bold Lad began his three-year-old campaign with a win in the Tetrarch Stakes at The Curragh in Ireland. Sent to England, he was the 100/30 joint-favorite with Royal Palace going in to the Classic 2,000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket. He finished unplaced behind Royal Palace and Taj Dewan, having been denied a clear run in the closing stages. Bold Lad then started favourite for the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury but was beaten three-quarters of a length by the Irish-trained four-year-old Bluerullah. In the last race of his career, ran third to Reform in Ascot’s St. James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Retired to stud at a fee of 400 guineas, Bold Lad made a “spectacular” start to his breeding career, siring the 1000 Guineas winner Waterloo in his first crop of foals. He also sired the leading sprinters Boldboy and Never So Bold, the Richmond Stakes winner Persian Bold (sire of Kooyonga) and Ballad Rock, the sire of Chief Singer.

PAT SMULLEN - A LEGACY

Pat Smullen, our nine-time Irish champion jockey, was at the centre of an incredible fund-raising drive over Longines Irish Champions Weekend 2019, which culminated in the Pat Smullen Champions Race for Cancer Trials Ireland here at the Curragh Racecourse and raised approximately €2.6m for Cancer Trials Ireland.

PAT SMULLEN - A LEGACY Ms Eibhlín Mulroe, CEO of Cancer Trials Ireland, said: “In the end, Pat helped raise €2.6m for pancreatic cancer, and since then the horse racing community has continued to support us with a range of fundraisers, prize winnings, lease donations – it has been incredible.” These funds have contributed to four studies in total: Two new drug trials for pancreatic cancer: One aiming to improve the effect of chemo for people with newly diagnosed advanced pancreatic cancer, the other (opening Jan 2022) being for advanced stage pancreatic patients that have failed treatment, which may give participating patients a few more months of life. The first of these trials is open now – with 11 patients of a possible 43 taking part so far. That’s eleven patients getting an otherwise unavailable treatment for pancreatic cancer, thanks to Pat Smullen. The second trial will have up to 22 patients.

A third non-drug nutrition study that aims to aid recovery from surgery for pancreatic cancer, while a fourth study will give patients a higher dose of radiotherapy ahead of surgery. The Pat Smullen fund also donated €100k to St Vincent’s Hospital towards a ‘Next Generation Genetic Sequencing Machine’ that will sequence pancreatic cancer tumours, once installed this September. The cost of trials easily runs into the millions, it is phenomenal that we have been able to pull together four studies in pancreatic cancer since 2019, in spite of the pandemic and more recently the HSE Ransomware attack.

All of this was made possible by Pat Smullen and the people he inspired to support pancreatic cancer trials research. I want to thank Frances Crowley, Fiona Craig and all of the people who continue to think of Pat, and Cancer Trials Ireland, when they make charitable donations.

BREEDERS’ CUP CONNECTION Two of today’s Group 1 races, the Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes, are part of the ‘Win and You’re In’ series for the Breeders’ Cup, where the winner automatically gains entry to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf respectively. The Moyglare form translates well over the Atlantic, with recent placers in the two-year-old contest running at the Breeders’ Cup. While last year’s winner Shale didn’t take up the option of running at Keeneland, the talented Mother Earth, twice a Group 1 winner as a three-year-old in the English 1000 Guineas and the Prix Rothschild at Deauville, did take up the engagement and ran a fine race to finish second behind a smart type. Looking further back, Daahyeh, who was second in 2019 to Love, ran at Santa Anita, finishing a good second under William Buick and landing valuable black type. Albigna, sixth in the Moyglare, improved to finish fourth behind Daahyeh. In 2015, Alice Springs finished a length and a quarter third behind the talented Minding and Ballydoyle in the Moyglare, before being denied a follow up win at the Breeders’ Cup, going down by three quarters of a length at Keeneland to the Mark Casse-trained Catch A Glimpse. In recent times, September finished third in both the Moyglare and the equivalent race at Del Mar, and the search for a filly capable of winning both races goes on.

CURRAGH COMMENT Winter Power landed her first Group 1 at the second time of asking when showing her devastating speed in the Nunthorpe Stakes. She could be encountering perfect conditions and should be bang there at the business end. Preference, however, goes to another three-year-old in the form of MOONEISTA after drawing clear to land the Sapphire Stakes over course and distance in July. The Jack Davison-trained filly relished the step back to 5f and there could be further progression on the horizon. Dragon Symbol has been knocking on the door in all of the top Group 1 events this term and he may be on the premises yet again.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. SKY LANTERN 2012 MOYGLARE STUD STAKES WINNER

Previously a winner in Ireland at Naas, Sky Lantern made a winning return to the Emerald Isle with a smooth success in the 2012 renewal of this race. Ridden confidently by Richard Hughes, this dashing filly showed her class to win by two and a half lengths at the line.

The racing world united in tribute to the late His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, an influential and much missed member of the equestrian community. Few owners will enjoy the successes of Sheikh Hamdan. He owned Epsom Derby winners Nashwan and Erhaab and always had horses competiting in Europe’s best Group 1 races. He also enjoyed international successes, both as the figurehead of his breeding empire Shadwell Estate and through the victories of Almutawakel and Invasor in the Dubai World Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic respectively. A loyal and passionate supporter of thoroughbred racing, he also enjoyed involvement with the Arabian racing scene as a patron of the Arabian Racing Organisation and through his ownership of Arabians. Donnacha O’Brien gained a breakthrough success when saddling Shale to victory in this race last year under Ryan Moore. She reversed the form from the Debutante Stakes by beating Pretty Gorgeous by half a length, having been two lengths behind in the earlier Group 2 clash. Pushed into a prominent position early by Ryan Moore, Shale took up the lead two furlongs from the finish and wasn’t for passing, despite the strong challenge from her old rival Pretty Gorgeous. Founded by Walter Haefner almost 5 decades ago in 1973, the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes run at the Curragh Racecourse is now enthusiastically stewarded by his daughter Eva Maria Bucher-Haefner. On the cusp of the race’s half century anniversary, this influential Group One fillies race is famous for not only its continual sponsorship by the Haefner family but also its increasing success as a consistent source of Champion race fillies. Of growing importance is the subsequent broodmare career of many of these elite fillies, producing Champions and Classic winners themselves, so in turn establishing their own dynasties. CURRAGH COMMENT It may have taken five attempts for AGARTHA to break the maiden but since she has, the daughter of Caravaggio has gone from strength to strength. A comfortable winner of recognised trial races on her last two outings, Joseph O’Brien’s filly can keep this prestigious Group 1 in the family. Homeless Songs had the selection behind when winning on debut in July and she could be anything, despite the long absence. Discoveries wasn’t seen to best effect when held up in the Debutante Stakes and she is entitled to improve, along with C&D winner Cairde Go Deo.

THE GOFFS VINCENT O’BRIEN NATIONAL STAKES (GROUP 1) HONOURING A TRUE LEGEND OF THE TURF If ever a man deserved to have a Group One race named in his honour, Vincent O’Brien does. From humble beginnings in Co. Cork, O’Brien quickly developed into the most dominant National Hunt trainer of his era. To name but a few, he saddled Cottage Rake to win three successive Cheltenham Gold Cups (1948-50), Hatton’s Grace to win three consecutive Champion Hurdles (1949-51) and perhaps most remarkably, he trained the winner of the Aintree Grand National in three consecutive years with three different horses (1953-55). Hatton’s Grace was sold at Goffs as were O’Brien’s 1955 Grand National winner Quare Times and 1953 Gold Cup winner Knock Hard. However, it wasn’t until Vincent bought and built up a new training base at Ballydoyle in Co. Tipperary and turned his hand to training Flat horses that his influence became truly worldwide. Having partnered with John Magnier, the owner of Coolmore Stud and a multitude of prominent racehorse owners, most notably Robert Sangster, O’Brien helped to change the world of thoroughbred breeding by strongly supporting the progeny of a diminutive Canadian-based stallion called Northern Dancer. That proved to be inspired, as Northern Dancer would go on to establish himself as one of the most influential sires of all time and Vincent trained such talented and influential sons of his such as Nijinsky, Be My Guest, The Minstrel, Sadler’s Wells and El Gran Senor. The big-race wins that O’Brien enjoyed on Flat are too numerous to list in entirety, but there are many highlights, with his record in Classics being particularly noteworthy. In total, O’Brien saddled 27 Irish Classic winners including six in the Irish Derby, as well as 16 British Classics including six Epsom Derby winners - including Larkspur who was purchased at Goffs. At the inaugural yearling sales held at the new Goffs complex in Kill in 1975, a son of Northern Dancer became Europe’s highest priced yearling of all time. The colt, Lot 419 who was offered by Moyglare Stud with a nomination for the National Stakes at the Curragh, was purchased by Vincent O’Brien for 127,000gns. The yearling was named Be My Guest and went on to become European Champion Sire in 1982. Of the dozens of Group 1 races Vincent won throughout his career, the Group 1 he won on more occasions than any other was the National Stakes at the Curragh. Often targeting his best two-year-old at it, he saddled the winner of it on no less than 15 occasions, with perhaps his most memorable winners of the race being the legendary Sir Ivor (1967) and El Gran Senor (1983). Thus, it is fitting that the National Stakes should nowadays be known as The Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes in recognition of the remarkable contribution that Vincent O’Brien made to making Ireland the leading thoroughbred nation in the world. CURRAGH COMMENT A competitive renewal of this Group 1 contest but preference is for TWILIGHT PAYMENT, after his victory in the Irish St Leger Trial over C&D last month.
