The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

SINDAGAN was a big eyecatcher on his debut at Naas and may be able to strike now Despite being a touch green, the Mehmas colt made up plenty of ground in the closing stages, from the rear, and finished off well when third to Port Ferdinand in a newcomers’ race He is entitled to improve plenty from that. The Ballydoyle horses often step forward a nice bit from their initial runs and Causeway is the obvious danger The Wootton Bassett colt was a promising fourth at Gowran a fortnight ago Big Cypress, a half-brother to smart sorts Piz Badile and Yosemite Valley, is an interesting newcomer for Joseph O’Brien.

CAMEO stepped forward considerably on her second run at Punchestown and can open her account. The Wootton Bassett filly kept on well when third to La Fogata and that form looks solid as the winner had been fourth in Group 3 company previously Killashee Warrior drops back into maiden company after a fine performance to finish fourth in a Listed affair at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend. She has to be a leading player Goofy Gander shaped with promise when fifth on her debut at Galway and is another who has to be considered. She is entitled to improve a bit from that experience

CARLA RIDGE has been placed three times in stakes company this season and deserves to make the breakthrough. Her two runs behind Sky Majesty at Naas during the summer were good efforts and a repeat of either should be enough to get the job done now Her rider reported that she was badly hampered when making little impression in a very competitive handicap here last time and it looks worth forgiving her that run. DEREKO’SULLIVAN ANAPPRECIATION

The Curragh is pleased to welcome members of the O’Sullivan family today to present the Derek O’Sullivan Memorial Perpetual Trophy to the winning jockey of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Apprentice Handicap. Derek was a founding director of RACE from 1973 until his untimely passing in 2002.

Originally from Dublin, Derek served his time as an electrician and worked his way through college, completing a social science degree before first meeting Stan Cosgrove in 1971 and accepting the challenge of setting up a school for apprentice jockeys as a form of social project. RACE opened its doors in September 1973 and for the first few years Curragh House was a hostel for a small number of young apprentices, offering lodgings, educational and social supports. The original Trustees/Committee included Stan Cosgrove, Joe McGrath (Turf Club Senior Steward), Michael Osborne (Irish National Stud), Tom Ryan, Tom Casey, Jim Marsh (stipendiary steward of the Turf Club) and Tom Brophy (local auctioneer in Newbridge).

From such small acorns do giant oaks grow and the fledgling apprentice centre has evolved over more than 40 years into a broad-based academy offering professional training for jockeys, stable staff, trainers, breeders and farriers with a campus and facilities that are the envy of the racing world. Great appreciation is due to the Army Equitation School in the Curragh Camp who provided practical training facilities and support during all those formative years and to FÄS who structured and funded the initial training programmes from 1978 and to Horse Racing Ireland and Kildare Wicklow ETB who still support the Trainee Jockey programme.

Derek had a vision for RACE that extended far beyond Kildare town and his pioneering work led to an enduring friendship with Japan and the setting up of a training school in Hokkaido for the Japan Racing Association (JRA). Ireland was put on the map as a centre of excellence for training racing staff and riders from around the globe and Derek was one of the founders of the European Association of Racing Schools (EARS).

Derek always envisaged that RACE would be a catalyst for change in the Irish racing industry and he fought passionately for more investment in the professional training and education of young people and the welfare of stable staff. He understood that the all-round development of the person is what creates the foundation for a successful career and a fruitful life and his legacy is evident in the hundreds of RACE graduates who have made their mark in Ireland and around the world.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
