The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

DYLAN BROWNE MCMONAGLE

CHAMPION JOCKEY

Letterkenny’s Dylan Browne McMonagle will be crowned Champion Jockey for the ﬁrst time at the Curragh today. Champion apprentice in 2021 and again in 2022, Dylan brought his tally for the season to a career best of 95 winners. The highlight of Dylan’s season in Ireland was his Group 1 Comer Group International Irish St Leger victory on the Joseph O’Brien-trained Al Riffa. He was a Group 2 winner on the same horse at the Curragh in July, and enjoyed multiple the year, winning on the likes of Goodie Two Shoes, Princess Child, Sons And Lovers and Wemightakedlongway

MRS SUE MAGNIER CHAMPION OWNER

Ireland’s champion owner for 2025 is Mrs Sue Magnier. Mrs Magnier narrowly gets the better of fellow Coolmore partners Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith to retain the title Her involvement with equine stars such as Delacroix, Lambourn, Puerto Rico and Minnie Hauk helped her to retain the coveted champion owner title again this year

AIDAN O’BRIEN CHAMPION TRAINER

For a remarkable 28th time, Aidan O’Brien is our champion trainer. On target to equal or beat his own record of training 28 Group 1 winners in a calendar year, Aidan can count wins in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas with Lake Victoria, Lambourn in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, the Juddmonte Irish Oaks with Minnie Hauk and Delacroix in the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes among his haul for another brilliant season.

JACK CLEARY

Jack Cleary is the son of Kildare trainer Michael Cleary and has taken his proﬁle to new heights in 2025 with his association with the Aidan O’Brien stable being key. Cleary rode four winners at Leopardstown on October 18, his 22nd birthday, including the Group Killavullan Stakes on Dorset and the Group 3 Mongey Communications Eyreﬁeld Stakes on Christmas Day for the Ballydoyle stable. Dorset also gave him a huge win in the Goffs Million, the richest 2yo race in Europe, at the end of September at the Curragh, when the prizemoney fund was €500,000 to the winner

WAYNE HASSETT

Last year’s apprentice championship runner-up and based with Joseph O’Brien, Tipperary’s Wayne Hassett has continued his progress in 2025 after a strong showing in 2024 when he won major handicaps at the Irish Champions Festival and the Galway Festival. His biggest wins this year include Jagged Edge in the Irish Cambridgeshire for Dermot Weld and Mr Percy for his boss in the Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Premier Handicap at the Curragh. He also won the Kellihers Toyota Kingdom Gold Cup, a Premier Handicap at Killarney, for Henry de Bromhead.

WESLEY JOYCE

Wesley Joyce, 22, from Limerick, enjoyed his best season yet. He began his career with Johnny Murtagh and showed huge potential before suffering life-threatening injuries in a fall at Galway in the summer of 2022. It took around a year before he returned to the saddle better than ever, a feat that led to him receiving the Flat Achievement Award at the HRI Awards in 2023. His biggest supporter this year has been trainer Mick Mulvany, supplying him with the majority of his winners, four of which have come on Sunriseontheboyne.

ROBERT WHEARTY

Robert Whearty from County Meath is attached to the Gavin Cromwell stable, who has provided him with the majority of winners in 2025. The Bellewstown man is having his best season and has already surpassed his 2023 and 2024 tallies with 19 and 22 winners respectively. He has also had great partnership with trainer Paul Flynn, riding plenty of winners for the County Longford handler, including Little Queenie at Navan.

At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
