The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

CLOSELY shaped with promise on her second start last summer, when fourth at Cork, and may be able to strike on her return. The No Nay Never filly didn’t show much on her debut at Listowel but it was a much better performance 12 days later and the form of that race, won by Suzie Songs, has worked out well. Spring Is Here disappointed on her return at Dundalk but is capable of better than that showing. The Starspangledbanner filly kept good company last season, finishing fourth in Listed company on two occasions. Slaney View was sent off favourite for the opening juvenile race last season, which was won by subsequent Group 1 winner Power Blue She’s another to consider WIN: CLOSELY

DANGER: Spring Is Here

ABBREVIATIONSEXPLAINED

You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?

C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Curragh. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Curragh may suggest that it will run well again today

D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.

CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Curragh but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.

C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Curragh and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course

BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today

CURRAGH COMMENT

DMANIAC was impressive on his return to action here 13 days ago and can defy a 7lb hike. The Washington DC gelding travelled really well when scoring by a cosy three-and-a-quarter lengths in similarly testing conditions and the drop back in trip doesn’t look like a concern. The four-year-old is progressive and loves the mud. Stag Night was third behind the selection last time and is entitled to get a bit closer now on revised terms. Smoke Them Out was also a winner here on the opening day and has to be respected. He went up 4lb but only has 3lb claimed off his back this time as opposed to 7lb last time

CURRAGH COMMENT

There could be more to come from NANCEE SPAIN this season. The Calyx filly really blossomed on her final start last term, after some promising efforts, when scoring by a wide margin at Roscommon. She looked like a strong galloper in testing conditions that day and the big track here should play to her strengths. Neptunes Staircase was also an impressive winner at Roscommon on his last start but that did come back in July 2024. Ger Lyons is sure to have him fairly fit for his return though and he’s respected. Factual Fact was narrowly denied in a maiden here last November, by a smart mare in Switch From Diesel, and he is another for the shortlist.

1XBET GLADNESS STAKES

OVERVIEW

The Gladness Stakes was first run in 1963 and is named after Gladness, a successful Irish-trained horse of the 1950s. Initially contested over longer distances, it was shortened to its current seven furlongs in 1970, reflecting its modern role as a specialist sprint/mile trial. Over time, the race has shifted in status: it was elevated to Group 3 level in 1987 before being downgraded back to Listed status from 2024. Despite these changes, it has retained its reputation as a key early fixture in the Irish flat racing calendar.

The roll of honour includes several high-class performers and notable names in racing history such as Nijinsky, who won the race in 1970, plus more recently dual winners Mustameet and Lancaster House

Overall, the Gladness Stakes combines heritage, competitive conditions, and a strategic position in the season, making it a valuable indicator of form for the months ahead.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

Victory last year went to the experienced sprinter Big Gossey, an eight-year-old trained by Charles O’Brien and ridden by Billy Lee. Sent off at 7/1, he produced a strong, determined performance, travelling prominently before taking the lead inside the final furlong and holding on under pressure to win by half a length.

The runner-up was Camille Pissarro, a threeyear-old representing the powerful Aidan O’Brien yard, who stayed on strongly from off the pace but could not quite reel in the winner. Close behind in third was Officer, another threeyear-old from the same stable, highlighting the strength in depth among the younger generation.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

Eight of the last 12 winners were aged 4

Eight of the last 12 winners had at least 2 previous runs at the Curragh

3 of the last 12 winners were favourites

All eyes will be on Albert Einstein as Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old looks set for a hattrick here today With a pair of wins at Naas and here in May, further success in this Listed Contest looks likely ahead of his trip to Newmarket for the 2,000 Guineas. Ryan Moore will be in the saddle for this one. Ed Walker’s Ten Bob Tony looks to be his chief rival. The five-year-old was 13th in the Champion Sprint on his last start but he steps back up to 7f here All three of his previous wins have come over that trip Last year’s winner Big Gossey will also be in action as he looks to defend his crown. He’s winless since this contest last year and doing the double will be a big ask but he has definitely got it in him.

CURRAGH COMMENT

All eyes will be on ALBERT EINSTEIN as he makes a surprise appearance in preparation for the 2000 Guineas. Aidan O’Brien hasn’t been shy about how highly he rates the Wootton Bassett colt, who won both starts early last season. He faces a stiff enough task against some talented older horses but if he’s the star they think he is in Ballydoyle, he should come through this test. English raider Ten Bob Tony sets the standard with his official rating of 112. He was placed in Group 1 company over this trip in France last October and is a big player on that form. Princess Child, a Group 3 winner last year, handles cut and is another who is respected.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Joseph O’Brien, who has made a flying start to the new turf season, can land this with LISTENTODWINDBLOW A promising fourth on his debut at Cork, the Wootton Bassett colt was then far from disgraced when finishing mid-division in two strongly-contested sales races. Again, there was enough to take from his final outing when sixth in a Group 3 at Leopardstown to suggest he should be winning his maiden. Third on his sole start as a juvenile, the Johnny Murtagh-trained Zenford is entitled to be all the better for that initial experience Spacebound, who shaped with promise on his introduction at Dundalk in January, is another with claims.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

CURRAGH COMMENT

A C&D winner last November, the Ciaran Murphy-trained TITANIUM can add to that success. The seven-year-old Zarak gelding again showed his liking for this track when an encouraging sixth of 25 in the Irish Lincolnshire Dropped 2lb, he should have come on in terms of fitness and is entitled to be one of the leading contenders. Charming Whisper is of definite interest if the ground dries out. A five-time winner on turf, the son of Charm Spirit caught the eye at Dundalk on his most recent start and should appreciate returning to this surface Perry Mason is another who should be all the sharper for a recent run.

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.

Another common bet is each-way This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:

All races of less than 5 runners – win only

All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2

All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3

Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3

Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4

With an official rating of 102, the Donnacha O’Brien-trained SHAIHAAN can open his account. Seventh on debut here in July, the Night Of Thunder colt stepped forward to finish runner-up to a subsequent Group 1 winner at Dundalk next time Fourth in a Group 2 back at this track on his final juvenile start, he can hit the ground running this term. An impeccably bred colt, the Aidan O’Brien-trained newcomer George Stubbs commands maximum respect. Stablemate King Of Sparta, who showed promise in two runs last season, cannot be ruled out in first-time cheekpieces. WIN: SHAIHAAN DANGER: George Stubbs

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

CURRAGH COMMENT

ROYAL IMPACT has leading claims if he can transfer his all-weather form to the turf. Off the mark on his handicap debut at Dundalk last time, the form of that race has been well advertised subsequently and he tops the shortlist. Runner-up over a mile here last time, Lough Leane should again make his presence felt. A six-time winner on the all-weather, the six-year-old has run some solid races on turf for his current trainer God Knows is another that could get involved.
