Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A ﬁt horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. He had Let’s Smash It behind in third when chasing home Hard Promises that day and should be able to confirm form with that rival. HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. The son of Starspangledbanner made the running before finishing fourth to Thunder Call in a strong event. He remains fairly unexposed and there could be more to come from the three-year-old. Genesis rarely runs a bad race and has a good record here. He was runner-up over the minimum trip 13 days ago and sprung a surprise in the Rockingham in late June. Gotta Catch’em All is another who has been very consistent of late and has to come into calculations, along with Go Athletico.

CURRAGH COMMENT GREEN EMPRESS has bumped into the high-class Sun Goddess on both appearances and got a lot closer to the Group 1 winner on her second start in a Group 2 over 6f here in late June. Out of a Sea The Stars mare, she is likely to be suited by this longer trip and can get off the mark with a Pattern success. Alpha was impressive when easily beating Ibelieveicanfly in a C&D maiden on Derby weekend, but then did plenty wrong when struggling at long odds-on to beat Dancing Destiny in the Silver Flash at Leopardstown, with Blonde Over Blue well held in fourth.

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most deﬁnitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them. CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision. HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process. TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

TOM COOPER AN APPRECIATION Tom Cooper was a legendary bloodstock agent who was associated with many top horses during his illustrious career. He founded BBA Ireland in 1962 and was the ﬁrst Irish-based agent to purchase at the Keeneland Yearling Sales, in 1959. He also had a strong association with trainer Vincent O’Brien and was responsible for purchasing many of his best horses. He sadly passed away in 1990. The Curragh is delighted to be able to remember Tom today. The winning owner of The Coolmore City of Troy Tom Cooper Futurity Stakes will receive the Tom Cooper Perpetual Trophy.

NEVILLE O’BYRNE TRIBUTE 19 4 5 - 2 018 ONE of the most unassuming men you would ever meet, Neville O’Byrne’s influence was felt in many aspects of life. He was a man who adopted a style of quiet diplomacy, though it was backed by a steely resolve. Neville was known widely for his integrity, both by members of the legal profession and by the leading figures in racing and breeding. He was passionate when it came to his many interests, including family and friends, work, racing and rugby. In his legal profession Neville was managing partner of William Fry, while he was a well-remembered and highly-respected senior steward of the Turf Club, now the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board. In addition, he was a board member of Horse Racing Ireland and a governor of the Irish European Breeders’ Fund who are remembering him today with a race named in his honour. To all these roles he brought an unassuming nature, wise counsel, good judgement, common sense, fairness, and a dry sense of humour. Neville was appointed senior steward of the Turf Club in December 2013, six years after becoming a member, and chaired its compliance and regulations committee. He was noted for his conciliatory approach, always seeking to find common ground and agreement. Other roles included being a director of Curragh Racecourse Ltd and a member of the Leopardstown Racecourse Committee. Working closely with other like-minded people who were keen to establish a world-class weekend of racing in Ireland, Neville played a significant role in the establishment of the Irish Champions Weekend, staged at both Leopardstown and the Curragh. History was made when Neville handed over the senior steward baton to the first female to hold the position, Meta Osborne. At the time of his death, she said: “Irish racing has lost a true stalwart; he was a real mentor”. The then Horse Racing Ireland chief executive Brian Kavanagh added that he “was a wise counsel to many”. Neville O’Byrne died on Sunday, September 2nd, 2018. He was 73. He was married to Maud for over 45 years, father to Rachel, father-in-law to Daniel and grandfather to Zoe and Harry.

CURRAGH COMMENT Queenstown still has just the one victory to his name, but he picked up minor money in a couple of French Group 1 contests last autumn. The fact he is the sole Ballydoyle representative in a race the O’Brien family has dominated speaks volumes, but the 10-month absence is a big enough concern to sway the vote in favour of LEINSTER. Joseph O’Brien’s five-year-old was a disappointing favourite in the Martin Molony won by Layfayette at Limerick, but he will relish the return to a trip at which he performed well behind Scandinavia twice previously. He trounced Dallas Star in this 12 months ago too. His stablemate Kizlyar is diverted here after missing the Ebor cut, while Carmers comes right into the equation if he fails to take up Friday’s Lonsdale Cup engagement.
