The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A ﬁt horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

The son of Frankel has significant big-race entries and it is worth noting that his sister was good enough to win on her racecourse debut. Aidan O’Brien is going for five in a row in this contest and fields three newcomers in Speakers Corner, Victory Speech and Drumbeat with preference for the former as Ryan Moore’s pick. All of these Wootton Bassett colts hold the same Group 1 entries, so a market check is imperative. Johnny Murtagh’s Fort Dearborn is more than capable of a good showing too.

Moody is in terrific form and looks a very useful second string to the selection on her step up in class. HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated ﬁve points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar ﬁgures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the ﬁnish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most deﬁnitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a ﬁne mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the ﬁeld of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

Donnacha O’Brien trains July Cup winner Comanche Brave and HAVANA ANNA is another smart sprinter in his yard. She’s had two good runs over 6f this term, a Group 3 success at Naas before finishing fourth in the Commonwealth Cup, but the minimum distance won’t be a problem for her as shown by her smart juvenile form. She has been supplemented for this Group 2, so has clearly gone the right way since Royal Ascot. There was virtually nothing between Rosy Affair and Jakajaro when they narrowly missed out on a first three-finish in the King Charles III Stakes over 5f at the Royal meeting, and both are major players here

He had Immortal Guard over a length behind when second over C&D to the subsequent Coventry Stakes winner in May and, after a disappointing display himself at the Royal meeting, bounced back to win at Listed level at Naas. OVERVIEW

The Irish Oaks is Ireland’s premier Classic for three-year-old fillies and one of the most prestigious races on the European flat racing calendar Run at the Curragh over one mile and four furlongs, the Group One contest takes place each July and regularly attracts the leading middle-distance fillies from Britain, Ireland and beyond.

First staged in 1895, the race was initially run over a mile before being extended to its current distance in 1915. It is Ireland’s equivalent of the Epsom Oaks, and many of the sport’s ﬁnest ﬁllies have attempted to complete the coveted British-Irish Oaks double

The roll of honour features some of the greatest ﬁllies of the modern era, including Ouija Board, Snow Fairy, Enable and Snowfall. More recently, Minnie Hauk added her name to the list of distinguished winners in 2025, further enhancing the race’s reputation as a contest for the very best middle-distance ﬁllies.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

While not as visually impressive as her 2/11sp suggested she might have been, Minnie Hauk still made short work of her rivals to score by a length-and-a-quarter after running down Joseph O’Brien’s daughter of Australia Wemightakedlongway, under an excellent ride by Ryan Moore

In doing so, Minnie Hauk became the third ﬁlly trained by Aidan O’Brien and the sixteenth in all to win both the Epsom Oaks and Irish Oaks, joining Alexandrova and Snowfall to do the double for Aidan O’Brien.

A star-studded field of eleven goes to post for today’s feature, with Earth Shot and Thundering On sharing favouritism at the head of the market. Joseph O’Brien’s stable star returns to the same trip as her Epsom Oaks success in a bid to become just the seventieth filly to complete the Epsom and Irish Oaks double She’ll appreciate returning to her own age group after finishing fourth in the Pretty Polly Stakes last month and has every chance of bouncing back. Earth Shot is the chief British hope for William Haggas. Her Ribblesdale Stakes success at Royal Ascot came after a sustained challenge from the back of the pack that saw her edge out the reopposing Johanna Walsh in the shadows of the post. The form of that race has yet to be fully tested, but she’s entitled to improve again. Amelia Earhart has been fitted with first-time cheekpieces by Aidan O’Brien in a bid to revive her fortunes after a below-par effort in the Epsom Oaks.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
