A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign
Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race
Around The PaddockA Simple Guide
A fit horse is easy to see, very lean & tight
Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)
A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip
A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears
A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Joseph O’Brien looks to have a nice bunch of juveniles this season and newcomer BELICOSO can make a winning introduction. A son of Churchill, the colt is out of a decent mare who picked up black type in France With Dylan Browne McMonagle in the saddle, he appears to be the stable number one and a high draw is usually the place to be on the sprint track here Ischgl misbehaved at the start on debut but ultimately ran a decent race to finish second behind a well-regarded Ballydoyle colt, while High King is a well-bred debutant who also enters calculations.
WIN: BELICOSO DANGER: Ischgl

CHINESEINFORMATIONCENTRE
In celebration of the ‘Year of the Horse’, The Curragh is delighted to welcome members of the Irish Chinese Information Centre and the local Chinese community to the racecourse today!
The Irish Chinese association information center was organized and established by Dr Katherine Chan Mullen in 2002 and officially registered with the Irish government. This move marked a more formal and systematic organizational platform for the Chinese community in Ireland, so as to better serve local Chinese and overseas Chinese and promote their integration into the mainstream Irish society. Up to now, the Irish Chinese association information center has been led by three generations of presidents. Each generation has innovated while inheriting and developed while innovating. At present, the center has nearly a hundred members, who come from all walks of life and have diverse backgrounds, but all share the common vision of serving Chinese. This center is dedicated to serving Chinese people in Ireland. It not only offers assistance and support in their daily lives but also actively promotes exchanges and cooperation between Ireland and China in the cultural and economic fields.
Ambassador Sha Hailin and the Mayor of Dublin, among others, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony when the Irish Chinese association information center was established in 2002
The Irish Chinese association information center of Ireland holds a variety of activities every year, such as the grand Spring Festival celebrations. These activities not only brought joy and cohesion to the Chinese community, but also demonstrated the unique charm of Chinese culture to all sectors of Irish society. Through these activities, the center has effectively strengthened the connection and interaction among communities, enabling more people to understand and experience the essence of Chinese culture.
The Irish Chinese association information center successfully promoted the establishment of a sister city relationship between Hangzhou and Limerick. This move further deepened the friendly cooperation between the two countries. By promoting trade, investment cooperation and cultural exchanges between the two countries, the Center Contributed to the economic development of Ireland and China. To promote communication and understanding between the provinces and cities in Ireland and facilitate economic and cultural exchanges.
Charity plays an important role in the Irish Chinese association information center. In the charity activities, I.C.C.S.S.information center not only donated generously to the Irish Children’s Hospital, but also lent a hand to the earthquake-stricken areas in Sichuan, China, and contributed to the construction of schools in Africa. These charitable actions not only bring hope to those in need, but also fully demonstrate the selfless love and strong will of the Chinese community.
They have sent much-needed supplies to children and refugees in Ireland, China and Africa, allowing love to cross thousands of mountains and rivers and pass on warmth and care. During the epidemic, the center was concerned about the world and donated epidemic prevention materials to relevant cities and departments in China and Ireland.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Having shown a smart turn of foot to make a winning debut over course and distance last month, STAR PROSPECT can maintain his unbeaten record. Joseph O’Brien’s Starman colt travelled strongly throughout that contest before quickening smartly over a furlong out to readily open his account. Dundalk winner New Yorker will have to improve on that bare form but the No Nay Never colt was sent off a short price and had clearly been showing up well at home What A Girl Wants finished behind Star Prospect on debut but has place possibilities all the same

JOHN FLEMING - REST IN PEACE
The team at The Curragh were deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of John Fleming. He was a well-known figure in the Irish horse racing community, serving as a racehorse owner and the long-time publisher of the Irish Racing Yearbook, which he had produced for over 20 years.
Fleming was a patron of several trainers and was successfully involved in many horses trained by Michael O’Callaghan including the very speedy Navassa Island who broke her maiden at the Curragh as a two year old, while he was also a co owner of the Joe Murphy trained Cercene who finished third in the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas last year
We extend our condolences to John’s family, especially his wife Marian and his children Danny, Fintan and Orlaith.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Madrid Handicap winner CAUSEWAY can step up in class to register a third successive win. Despite an official rating of 99, the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt is almost certainly better than that rating, and it is surely significant that Ryan Moore has elected to ride the Derby entrant here With stablemate Neolithic holding the highest official rating (107) of the octet, the presence of Moore on Causeway really catches the eye The aforementioned Neolithic finished third on his reappearance in the Gladness Stakes, before winning at Gowran after On bare form, the Sioux Nation colt sets the standard. Leopardstown Group 3 third Redemption Road should be capable of a big run for the David Marnane stable WIN: CAUSEWAY DANGER: Neolithic

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

CURRAGH COMMENT
GREEN CARRERA could prove well treated off a mark of 80 on her handicap debut. Winner of a Thurles maiden over a mile last October, the Joseph O’Brien-trained filly failed to get competitive when well beaten in a Listed race on her final juvenile start. However, given that that race was just two weeks after her maiden and was run on testing ground, she is readily forgiven that below-par effort. Prevalence came forward from her debut to win her maiden on second start. She is open to improvement. Dundalk third Saint Agatha is also worthy of consideration.

a trIbute to lIam browne
The passing of Liam Browne marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Irish racing, a life defined by dedication, discipline, and a deep understanding of the horse.
Browne first made his name as a gifted jockey, rising to become a three-time champion apprentice from 1956 to 1958. His first big success in the saddle was on But Why for Cecil Brabazon in the 1957 Leopardstown November Handicap, while he went on to win the Pretty Polly Stakes on the Mickey Rogers-trained Owenello in 1958 and the Irish Lincoln on hot favourite Bright Talk in 1959.
As a Curragh based trainer, his name will forever be linked with the brilliant Dara Monarch, whose victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and at Royal Ascot brought Browne to the pinnacle of Flat racing Browne had a brilliant eye for a bargain, and Dara Monarch was picked up for a snip at just 5,000 guineas, while perhaps his best piece of business was buying Carlingford Castle for 7,500 guineas. He went on to finish runner-up behind Teenoso in the 1983 Epsom Derby (G1) before being sold on for £660,000.
Yet his achievements stretched beyond the Flat; Cheltenham Festival winners like Mr Kildare and Slaney Idol highlighted his versatility and skill across disciplines.
But statistics and trophies tell only part of the story. Browne’s true legacy lies in the people he guided. He was a mentor to generations of riders, including greats like Mick Kinane, helping to shape careers with a blend of discipline, patience, and belief. Those who came through his yard often spoke of a man who demanded high standards but gave just as much in return—a “perfectionist,” yet always fair As well as Kinane, Browne also brought the likes of Tommy Carmody, Jamie Spencer, Stephen Craine, and Mark Dwyer up through the ranks. His was the ultimate academy for young, up-and-coming riders back in the day.
Predeceased by his wife Anne, we extend our sympathy to his five children -Dermot, Caroline, Martin, Siobhan, and Anne Marie and other family members and friends

CURRAGH COMMENT
The exceptionally well-bred DROP DEAD GORGEOUS can make it two-from-two A daughter of Dubawi, the Aidan O’Brien-trained filly is closely related to multiple black type and Classic winners. Having made a winning introduction at Naas in March, connections will be hoping that the Oaks entrant can continue her progress before having her sights raised further in the coming months. A Group 3 winner as a juvenile, Black Caviar Gold sets the standard. Although a beaten favourite on her reappearance, the Paddy Twomey-trained daughter of Havana Grey is entitled to improve for that outing. Killashee Warrior, who finished in front of Black Caviar Gold last time, also holds claims in a decent affair

BETTING EXPLAINED
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.
Another common bet is each-way This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2 All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3 Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3
of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4
Clem Murphy, one of the most respected and long-serving members of the Coolmore team is being honoured today with the Mooresbridge Stakes being named in his memory.
“We count ourselves extremely lucky to have had Clem with us at Coolmore since the outset. He soon became part of our family and his friendship was treasured by us all. He had an unparalleled knowledge of the global bloodstock market and a great interest in the sport of racing. Firm but always fair, he was an extraordinarily clear thinker who could always find solutions where others only saw problems. A family man through and through, I will miss him greatly as will all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Clem had no enemies and the respect of all, a perfect example for us all to follow.”

CURRAGH COMMENT
Dual Oaks winner MINNIE HAUK can make a victorious reappearance under Ryan Moore Having landed her first four starts last term, the Aidan O’Brien-trained filly clearly runs well fresh and is sure to be close to peak fitness with some big early-season targets just around the corner Coronation Stakes winner Cercene is an intriguing runner on what is only her second start over this trip On the evidence of her Nassau Stakes second, she should have no stamina worries. Beset is next best.

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED
Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.
BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.
CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.
EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.
HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.
NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

CURRAGH COMMENT
PINAR DEL RIO can strike on his second start for trainer Alan McIntyre A three-time winner, the Havana Gold gelding ran a solid race on stable debut when fourth at Dundalk in January Given that he had never raced on the surface before, it was a pleasing effort and he makes plenty of appeal back on turf Down to a mark of 70, the seven-year-old looks nicely treated these days and can get the better of Go Out and Cork third Notforalongtime.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Second over course and distance last month, REPOSADO can go one better Prominent throughout from a similarly high draw, the Robson De Aguiar-trained gelding was headed over a furlong out but kept on well for minor honours. Despite being raised 4lb, the son of Wootton Bassett was rated much higher in the past and looks to have plenty in his favour C&D winner Jon Riggens loves to be covered up before coming home strongly In this big field, he has every chance, as does the consistent Send Harry

ABBREVIATIONSEXPLAINED
You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Curragh. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Curragh may suggest that it will run well again today
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Curragh but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Curragh and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today
