Curragh Racecard - Friday 3rd April

Page 1

FRIDAY 3RD APRIL, 2026

I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you for what is a historic day in Irish racing – our first ever Good Friday race meeting. We are delighted to be hosting this event and hope you have a very enjoyable day. Many people have worked hard to make this happen and your efforts are much appreciated.

We are delighted to partner with our on-course bookmakers who have generously sponsored the gate today to ensure free admission for all. If this is your first time visiting the Curragh, please explore and enjoy all our facilities. Customer feedback is always welcome.

There is plenty of family entertainment throughout the enclosures today, including the Moyglare Kidzone as well as food and beverage outlets.

We are greatly looking forward to the season ahead and this year we will race 24 times with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby scheduled for Sunday June 28th. With the support of Horse Racing Ireland and our sponsors we have increased our prize money again this year with the focus on our Listed and Group races and our better class handicaps.

Today’s race sponsors are the Irish European Breeders Fund, 1xBet and our on-course bookmakers. Your support is greatly appreciated, and I hope you have a great day.

I would also like to thank all owners of runners here today - we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support. We hope you will relax and enjoy your day at the Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the grandstand. Thank you for running your horse at the Curragh.

Please try out our café Orby’s by Lucy which is beside the parade ring and is open seven days a week, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall, including our Big Screen. To watch the racing, free seating is available for all patrons throughout the final furlong at the front of the stand.

We race here again at the Curragh in two weeks’ time on Sunday 19th April when our feature race will be the Group 3 Alleged Stakes, while we then look forward to the Newbridge Community Race Day on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May.

We look forward to welcoming you back here that day and regularly during the 2026 flat season.

Best wishes for a memorable day’s racing.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign

Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

Around The PaddockA Simple Guide

A fit horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip movement

Class! Hard to define, but you will recognise the confidence & intelligence of a Group 1 horse when you see it. They will often look you in the eye

A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

Andy Slattery has his string in fine form and STAYSOUND SUSIE may be able to give him another winner The U S Navy Flag filly has already had a couple of outings this year and stayed on well over 5f here last weekend when third to Bodhi Bear Going back up in trip should suit. CURRAGH COMMENT

CHABLIS ROCK stepped forward on her second outing last season and there may be more to come from her this term. The Sioux Nation filly was third behind Marjorie Daw in testing conditions at Gowran in October and this looks like a nice starting point for the Irish Oaks entry Chasing Paradise chased home the impressive Amelia Earhart on her sole outing last season and that form looks solid as the winner was fourth in Group 3 company previously Paddy Twomey’s charge Mistress Of Tyrone is a newcomer to note She is a half-sister to Listed winners Earl Of Tyrone and Countess Of Tyrone WIN: CHABLIS ROCK DANGER: Chasing Paradise

OVERVIEW

The Park Express Stakes is an important race in the calendar. First held in 2003 as a Listed race, it was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2006, reflecting its rising quality and competitiveness.

Contested over one mile on turf, the race is open to fillies and mares aged three years and older Its early position in the calendar makes it notable as one of the first Group races of the Irish turf season, often serving as a starting point for top-class runners.

Named after Park Express, a high-class filly and influential broodmare, the race carries strong historical significance. Despite its short history, it has produced notable winners and become a key stepping stone toward major races later in the season.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

Run over one mile on good ground, the Group 3 contest attracted a competitive field of nine fillies and mares.

The race was won by One Look, a fouryear-old filly trained by Paddy Twomey and ridden by Billy Lee. Producing a strong performance, she defeated her rivals in a time of 1 minute 37.7 seconds, confirming her class at Group level and marking herself as a filly to follow for the remainder of the season.

Behind the winner, Ecstatic finished second, with Naomi Lapaglia taking third, in a race that was run at a solid pace throughout.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

Nine of the last 12 winners have been aged 3 or 4

Three of the last 12 winners won on their previous start

2 of the last 12 winners were favourites

G M Lyons’ Faiyum will be garnering plenty of attention in the market. The four-year-old was a massive seven-length winner in a Group 3 at Gowran Park when last seen in September Colin Keane will be in the saddle once again today and if they can recreate that form, this daughter of Frankel will take some beating. Aidan O’Brien has a top pair in this race though. Moments Of Joy looks like the first string with Ryan Moore in the saddle though the Justify filly is winless since scoring on debut in June Stablemate Cameo won a strong maiden here in October and could be of interest. She’s A Nation won over this course and distance back in June and is also one to note

2025 winner: One Look

CURRAGH COMMENT

FAIYUM can make a winning return. The classy daughter of Frankel ended last season on an impressive note when powering clear in a Group 3 event at Gowran to score by a wide margin. She handles cut in the ground and is up to giving weight away to most of her rivals. The other horse in the field with a penalty is Princess Child. She weakened late on when seventh behind Big Gossey in the Gladness here last Saturday, but may improve a bit from that outing. California Dreamer was a cosy winner at Dundalk on her return and could play a big part. The unexposed Catalina Delcarpio is another to consider in a competitive contest.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Having acquitted himself with credit in some top handicaps last season, GLENEAGLE BAY is worth chancing on his reappearance Lightly raced for his age, the six-year-old has a decent record fresh and has run some of his best races at this venue With soft ground unlikely to be an issue, the Amo Racing-owned gelding can make a winning start to his campaign. Recent C&D winner Perry Mason has to be respected, despite a subsequent 7lb hike. The son of Advertise has been successful twice at this venue since joining the Maurice Ahern stable Diego El Queso could be open to further improvement and looks another leading contender

WIN: GLENEAGLE BAY

RACESPONSOR

DANGER: Perry Mason

A representative of 1xBet will present a trophy to the winning owner. The Curragh Racecourse and 1xBet will present €200 to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out. The Curragh will also present €100 to the groom in charge of the winning horse

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

Starting from stalls. Handicaps calculated 24th March. Value to winner: €58900; Second: €20000; Third: €10000; Fourth: €5000; Fifth: €3000; Sixth: €2000. (For Race Conditions see page 42)

CURRAGH COMMENT

Runner-up in the Irish Lincolnshire on his reappearance, EASTWATCH can go one place better Twice a winner last season, the lightly-raced son of Make Believe showed a definite preference for an ease in the ground. Sure to have come on from that recent outing, the Andy Slattery-trained four-year-old will also appreciate stepping back up in trip With his stable among the winners in recent days, he has plenty to recommend him. Although it took him until the end of the season to open his account last term, Mocking often gave the impression of being well handicapped. The Johnny Murtagh-trained gelding can progress further this year Fiver Friday is also worthy of consideration in a competitive heat.

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.

Another common bet is each-way This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:

All races of less than 5 runners – win only All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2 All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3 Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3 Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4

CURRAGH COMMENT

A half-brother to dual Derby winner Auguste Rodin, CANARY ISLAND catches the eye on his debut. The stable struck with a similarly well-bred newcomer at Naas recently and this Irish Derby entrant is sure to know his job at the first time of asking. Third on his introduction at this track in November, Atomic City should be all the better for that experience Also boasting an Irish Derby entry, the son of Ghaiyyath holds leading claims for Joseph O’Brien. CURRAGH COMMENT

Just denied in a Group 2 at Longchamp when last seen, EMIT has the potential to develop into a leading stayer this term. With an official rating of 111, the Joseph O’Brien-trained gelding has something in hand over these rivals and looks the one to beat provided that he is fit and ready for his first start since October A progressive type last season, Happy Pharoah may have been over the top when disappointing in the Irish Cesarewitch on his final appearance Although his best form has come on a sounder surface, the four-year-old has to be respected. A Piece Of Heaven has a bit to prove at this stage, but is more than capable on his best form.

WIN: EMIT

DANGER: Happy Pharoah

RACESPONSOR

A representative of 1xBet will present a trophy to the winning owner. The Curragh Racecourse and 1xBet will present €200 to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out. The Curragh will also present €100 to the groom in charge of the winning horse.

THANK YOU

The Curragh would like to thank Moyglare Stud for their support of the Stable Staff Canteen for their 2026 racing season.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
