Welcometothe Combined Services meeting our fifth meeting of seven at Larkhill Racecourse. We are hugely grateful to Stan Rawlins for all his work preparing the course throughout the season, as well as giving up much of his precious time with farm machinery to support significant improvements. Thanks also to Robert Fear, Course Inspector, Col Clive Bacon, Head of Infrastructure projects and John Hoare, our resident Master Craftsman. The results of their teamwork include all the groundwork preparation, 2new fences, 300m of new rails from the funnel to the lorry park and the northern bend, reinforcing all the paddock posts, painting the numbers board, rampand steps, essential electricalsafety work,grass cutting and strimming. Thank you for all your hard work.

We are so fortunate to have our wonderfully loyal team of volunteers for kindly supporting us again this season and to the only recently retired Col John Jago after more than 50 years of voluntary service to racing! Thank you all.

We recentlyhosted asuccessfulSchoolingTrials Day overhurdles, jumps and on the flat, generouslysupported by theHorse WelfareBoard and Racing Foundation. More Trial Days on the racecourse will be planned in the future. Until then, our gallops and separate schooling fences remain open for hire. ASHORT HISTORY OF THE COMBINED SERVICES

POINT-TO-POINT STEEPLECHASES

Welcome to the Combined Services Point-to-Point. This is the sixteenth running of this iteration. Created in 2010, by combining two of the most prestigious Larkhill days of racing, the United Services and the Army Point-to-Points. The original meeting took place hereonSaturday 25th February 1950. At thattime,itwas called the United Services Point-to-Pointand for many years it opened the point-to-point season

In 1953, Larkhill Racecourse was honouredbythe presence of HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, who watched the racing from aspecial stand. After the last race The Queen presented anew challenge cup –the Coronation Cup –tothe winner of the Open Race. This race has been run as part of the United Services Point-to-Point ever since, with this year being the 66th Anniversary. It has over time become one of the four Classics of the Point-to-Point season with many using it as atrial for The Foxhunter Chase. In 1995, Fantus, trained by the legendary Richard Barber, won both, whilst in 1998 Cavalero, having won here, went on to win the Foxhunters’ Chase at Aintree.

The Army meeting moved to Larkhill around 20 years ago having taken over the role of the first meeting in the calendar. Both meetings have supported SSAFA, the ABF (The Soldiers Charity) and other charities throughout their time and have donated in excess of £75,000 to various Saddle Clubs, Saddle Club Associations,jockey andofficial training and the Racecourse itself. In the Combined Services meeting the aim remains to promote steeplechase riding throughout theForces; to trainjockeys,vets and doctors and to help Larkhill Racecourse thrive and improve as the only remaining military racecourse in the country. The two Point-to-Point Committees worked to combine thebest fromboth original meetings, hence afull card of excellent racing.

COMBINED SERVICES PREVIEW

R1. Both Histrionicand HIghstakesplayer have entries as well as the Mixed Open and this race would be easier than the feature race. Sam Loxton has also entered Duc De Bourbon and on his best form he wouldbeonthe shortlist. Arthur’sSixpence wasunbeaten in his two outings last season andwith his trainer Harry Brown on fine form he should be considered. Farnoge was only narrowly denied on his pointing debut and is another with chances. One True King has been running in better races and he might appreciate the drop-in class. In an open-looking race Duc De Bourbon is the choice.

R2. This features anumber of last time out winners and of these Follow My Order was dominant when making all in his Maiden last month and is on the upgrade. Similar comments apply to both Woodstock Octo who won his debut at Dunsmore and Carrillo who won on his English debut in December in impressive fashion. Good Boy Eric won two of his three races last season and looks one to follow this season. Dom Rodrigo was placed on his seasonal debut and this Phil Rowley trained gelding will have come on from that outing. Dorset Dazzler has recorded two successes at Larkhill this season but was well beaten last time. Woodstock Octo is held in high regard by his trainer and is the choice.

R3. This may see the reappearance of the improving Glancing Hill and already the winner of two races this season. Hidden Heroics is unbeaten in his two races for his Novice Rider at Wadebridge but this looks atougher race. Kandor looked useful when winning asimilar race in December and should be on the short list. Punches Cross runs well in these types of races and has place possibilities. Ultimate Survivor is progressive and may be the one to trouble Glancing Hill the most.

R4. This is headedbythe prolific Larkhill winner Grace AVousEnki who will be seeking his 10th consecutive victory at the course. It will take atremendous effort to lower his colours who has looked on top form in his two outingsthisseason. His main potential rival is GracchusdeBalmewho wonthe Aintree Foxhunters and the Stratford Horse and Hound Cup last season but is on aretrieval mission after pulling up at Ludlow last month.On his best form he would give the likely favourite the most to do. Of the others AJet of Our Own has already won acompetitiveOpenrace at Larkhill but has not run up to that form in his last two outings. Beacon Edge brings abackgroundofhigh-quality racing under Rules and did win on his debut for new trainer Josh Newman but may find younger legs too speedy for him. Histrionic and Highstakesplayer were duelling at the last fence until the rider unseated off the last named leaving his rival to coast home. They may fight out for minor honours with Grace AVous Enki the selection.

R5. The ex-Irish Chiroqui Princess has been the runner up in three Irish Points. Now trained by Will Thirlby this will be her British debut. Another ex-Irish horse is the Chris Barber trained Skeeter Rock who was placed on his only outing and with his stable in such good form he must be considered. Valentin De Maine ran an encouraging race at the last meeting and ought to have come on .Drayton Flyer placed in three Hurdles forOlly Murphyisnow with Alan Hill andlooksan interesting recruit to pointing.Tom Lacey always does well with his newcomers and Gallant Tide is another to consider. Skeeter Rock is the selection.

R6. Thisfeatures another newcomer from Tom Lacey’s stableinthe form of Hive Runner by Blue Bresil and with the weight allowance as afour-year-old he may be the one to support. River Don was an encouragingsecond in November and has chances. Strolling Along was previously trainedbyDan Skelton and now with Will Biddick it will be interesting to see what achange of scenery can do for this placed Hurdler. Walkingtheline did not show much on her debut but this placed hurdler may run better on her second outing.

R7 Ruling Planet was runner-up in asimilar race last month and should have benefitted from that outing. Miss Bossy Boots was third in arace last season at Sandon. Gina Andrews has entered Wise Maiden a half sister to anumber of winnersand she should be checked in the paddock. Check out the other newcomers in the preliminaries. Ruling Planet is the choice.
