Champion Day got the 2026 Cheltenham Festival off to a tremendous start yesterday, delivering exceptional racing and a fantastic atmosphere around the racecourse. Today we turn our attention to Ladies Day, where the glamour, style and celebration of fashion combines with another outstanding afternoon of world-class racing.
The highlight of today is the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase, one of the most electrifying contests of the entire Festival. This year’s renewal features the hugely exciting Majborough, who arrives as the star attraction and, with a clear round of jumping, looks the one they all have to beat. However, in championship races at Cheltenham nothing can ever be taken for granted. Both L’Eau du Sud and Il Etait Temps will be ready to capitalise on any mistakes, ensuring what promises to be a fascinating and intriguing renewal of this prestigious two-mile championship.
Elsewhere on the card, both the Turners Novices’ Hurdle and the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase look wide open, with strong contenders from both sides of the Irish Sea. These races have long been key stepping stones for future stars of the sport, and today’s renewals look set to produce performances that could shape the seasons ahead.
Later in the afternoon we also look forward to the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase We are delighted to once again give racegoers the opportunity to cross to the centre of the course to watch this unique contest from a spectacular vantage point. Gates will open for public crossing at 14:50 and will close at 15:05, and this opportunity is available to Club and Tattersalls Enclosure ticket holders only. Following the race, racegoers will be permitted to cross back to the stands side at approximately 15:32, once all horses have safely cleared the course Please note that these arrangements are subject to weather conditions, and access to cross the course may change if required.
Away from the track, we are fully embracing the spirit of Ladies Day with our Ladies Day Centaur Takeover. The Centaur will be the hub of entertainment throughout the morning and between races, featuring our star-studded

pre-racing panel along with live music performances throughout the day from the one and only Belfast Brunch.
You won’t want to miss our Ladies Day Pre-Racing Panel, hosted by Rosie Turner at 11:20am in The Centaur, featuring an exceptional lineup including Rachael Blackmore, Alice Plunkett, and Natasha Hunt, who will share their insight and analysis ahead of the day’s racing
Our Best Dressed Competition once again gives racegoers the chance to showcase their finest race day looks and be in with the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes. To enter, simply have your photograph taken against one of our three official backdrops located in The Plaza, The Centaur, or The Best Mate Enclosure, then scan the QR code next to the backdrop and submit your name, contact details, and photograph.
Between races, racegoers are encouraged to visit The Orchard, where you can enjoy an outstanding collection of premium brands including Boodles, Debenhams, Holland Cooper, Chapel Down, Lavazza, Bottlegreen, Glenfarclas, Brooklands, Gaucho, and Red Bull.
Today’s racing would not be possible without the continued support of our sponsors, and we extend our sincere thanks to Turners, Brown Advisory, Glenfarclas, BetMGM, Debenhams, and Weatherbys for their valued partnership.
With the Festival now in full swing, anticipation continues to build towards the remaining highlights of the week, including the Ryanair Chase tomorrow and, of course, the ultimate test of Jump racing, the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, which takes centre stage on Friday afternoon. Enjoy everything that Ladies Day at Cheltenham has to offer, and thank you for being part of another memorable Festival.

2 vs Asofthe5th Race ofthe5th

It’s a real pleasure to welcome you all to Ladies Day at the Cheltenham Festival!
This time last year I was in the Weighing Room, with a very different mindset for the week ahead. As a jockey The Cheltenham Festival is what is it is all about I’m back in a very different capacity, I’m incredibly proud to be here as the Head of Ladies Day.
When The Jockey Club first approached me about working with them, I was really excited about the opportunity. Racing has given me so much, and the idea of helping to bring more women into the sport and make the day even more enjoyable for female racegoers felt like something I really wanted to be part of.
Since then, I’ve been working closely with the racecourse team behind the scenes as they’ve prepared to relaunch Ladies Day, making some suggestions along the way, some of which are in place today and others that were swiftly moved to the bin!
One of the most valuable parts of the time I’ve spent here has been with you, the racegoer. Back in November, I was lucky enough to spend the day with an amazing group of young women, some already racing fans and others simply looking forward to a great day out. It gave me a chance to experience Cheltenham from their perspective, hearing what they enjoy most about the day and what might make the experience even better I also spent time chatting to people around the racecourse, listening to their thoughts and feedback on how we can continue to enhance the experience for everyone who visits the Home of Jump Racing.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been out on the road, visiting shopping centres in Cardiff, Oxford and Birmingham, meeting so many people who were curious about racing but hadn’t experienced it before Those conversations were brilliant and really reminded me how much fun it is to share the excitement of the sport with new fans.
That brings me to what we’ve been building here at Cheltenham. The thing I’m most excited about is the Ladies Day Takeover of The Centaur. We’ve designed it as a destination where you and your friends can gather, relax and soak up the atmosphere before the races start, and continue enjoying everything it has to offer throughout the afternoon.
From 10.30am, the first 200 ladies through the doors will receive a free welcome spritz, and from 11.20am I’ll be joining Rosie Tapner, Alice Plunkett, Zoe Stratford, and Natasha Hunt for our pre-racing panel, where we’ll be chatting about the Festival, the key races to watch and what makes Cheltenham so special There’ll also be fashion and style conversations with Jade Holland Cooper and Lisa Tan.
The Debenhams Day Spa is also back, and their fab team will be on hand throughout the day offering hair and make-up touch-ups, perfect for making you feel your best. The Belfast Brunch Company will also be here, bringing immaculate vibes to The Centaur with their setlist packed full of floor fillers.
All in all, we hope this space provides the perfect spot for you and your friends to relax and enjoy some time between the races. But if you love it so much you can’t tear yourself away, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered, with all the on-track action shown live on the big screens.
I’ve spent the last few months learning and gathering ideas with the brilliant team in Cheltenham, and now today is the moment of truth. I’ll admit, I’m looking forward to seeing if it all comes together the way we have imagined. My hope is that everything we’ve put together for Ladies Day gives everyone a chance to experience the sport in a fresh way, have some fun, and maybe even fall a little bit in love with racing, just like I did After all the planning, the visits, the chats and the ideas, I can’t wait to see how it all feels on the day…. fingers crossed it’s even better than I hoped and a building block for years to come.
Above all else, I hope you have a fantastic Ladies Day and enjoy every moment of the racing.
Rachael Blackmore Head of Ladies Day

The Grade 1 Turners Novices’ Hurdle is run over two miles and five furlongs and is contested by some of the highest-class novice hurdlers this year. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the senior ranks. All of today’s runners will carry 11st 7lb.

The opener on day two went the way of The New Lion on his first start for JP McManus after being purchased from Darren & Annaley Yates. The three at the head of betting were the three to battle it out in a thrilling finish. The Yellow Clay was first to make his challenge but was quickly challenged by both Final Demand and then by The New Lion, who despite guessing at the final hurdle, had enough gears to snatch victory from The Yellow Clay.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

This painting captures the legendary racehorse Sprinter Sacre in my distinctive ‘nosy pony’ style. Most of us only see these extraordinary athletic racehorses when they are working, in the parade ring or flying past on the racecourse. Through this style of art, I wanted to show the character of the horse behind the racehorse, imagining Sprinter Sacre as he might be at home in his stable. The muzzle is often the first point of connection between horse and human, so bringing it into the foreground invites a closer, more personal moment with this much-loved champion. Sprinter Sacre is one of six legendary racehorses created for Cheltenham Racecourse in my ‘nosy pony’ style.
Sprinter Sacre’s portrait is on display at the gift shop during the Cheltenham Festival and is up for auction until 11:59pm on Monday 16th March. All funds from the winning bid will be donated to The Centenary Community Fund. To bid, please use the QR code or go to app.galabid.com/sprinter-sacre

The Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Steeple Chase is run over three miles and one furlong and features this season’s leading novice staying chasers. Many horses in the past have used this race as a stepping-stone to future Gold Cup glory - including the like of Denman, Bobs Worth and Lord Windermere. As is usual in a Grade 1 chase, all horses carry the same weight, in this case 11st 7lb, except for The Big Westerner who as a mare carries 11st.

16 of the past 19 winners were aged 7 The past 24 winners had contested a Graded novice chase 18 of the past 19 winners had finished 1st or 2nd in a Grade 1 or 2 Novice Chase
There was a shock result in our second race of the day if the market was to be believed as 20/1 shot Lecky Watson came home a ready winner under Sean O’Keffee. The seven-yearold sat prominent throughout, jumping excellently before powering away up the Cheltenham hill to score by four lengths. Favourite Ballyburn was let down by his jumping, eventually finishing a distant fifth Stellar Story stayed on well to take second, with Better Days Ahead a head behind in third.
Run over three miles, one furlong. 19 fences to be jumped

Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Steeple Chase is always a hotly contested race with Europe’s top novice staying chasers looking to make a name for themselves over the larger obstacles.
The three miles and half a furlong race was introduced to The Festival in 1946 under the title of the Broadway Novices’ Chase and that inaugural running was won by Birthlaw who was trained by Tommy Rayson and ridden by Ted Vinall. At 11-years-old he remains the oldest winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. In 1957, Fulke Walwyn became the race’s leading trainer when Mandarin, ridden by Michael Scudamore, gave him his fourth success in the race - adding to the victories of Mountain Prince (1948), On View (1951) and Glenbeigh (1954).
Some legendary names of the National Hunt scene have won the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase but perhaps the biggest of them all was Tom Dreaper’s Arkle who won the 1963 renewal before landing a hat-trick of Gold Cups in 1964, 1965 and 1966 Arkle’s rider Pat Taaffe was winning the race for the fourth time following victories on Coneyburrow (1953), Solfen (1960) and Grallagh Cnoc (1961) and when he partnered Proud Tarquin to victory in 1970 he became the leading rider in the race’s history
The Dan Moore-trained Tied Cottage proved a convincing winner under jockey Tommy Carberry in 1976 and four years later went on to land the Gold Cup before being subsequently disqualified having testing positive for a banned substance. 1977 was the Dickinson’s year when Gay Spartan won the race for trainer Tony and jockey Michael.
Several winners have subsequently achieved victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup but Jenny Pitman’s Garrison Savannah did it in subsequent years winning the race in 1990 and the Gold Cup in 1991 when he beat two former champions in Desert Orchid and Norton’s Coin. He almost went into the record books the following month when he went so close to winning the Grand National only giving best to Seagram
In 1992, Miinnehoma was a winning favourite of the race and two years later the Martin Pipe-trained runner went on to win the 1994 Grand National,
confirming that the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase really does unearth some future superstars
1999 saw victory for the Noel Chance-trained Looks Like Trouble who later went on to win the 2000 Gold Cup. Paul Nicholls’ Denman was an emphatic ten length winner of the 2007 Brown Advisory Chase before following up in breathtaking style in the following season’s Gold Cup, a feat repeated by Nicky Henderson’s 2012 winner Bobs Worth, as well as the Jim Culloty-trained Lord Windermere twelve months later. Nicholls was back in the winners’ enclosure in 2019 when Topofthegame took a thrilling renewal of the race from Henderson’s Santini
Willie Mullins won the first of six Brown Advisory Novices’ Chases when Florida Pearl galloped to success under Richard Dunwoody in 1998 before Rule Supreme and Cooldine followed suit in 2004 and 2009 Don Poli’s victory in 2015 saw Mullins join Fulke Walwyn as the race’s leading trainer but he has since surpassed him and now sits on six wins
The Peter Beaumont-trained Hussard Collonges became the joint longest priced winner of the race when landing odds of 33-1 in 2002 – the same price as the 1983 winner Canny Danny Another record was toppled in 2006 when the Paul Nicholls-trained Star De Mohaison became the first, and only, five-year-old winner
Nigel Twiston-Davies ended a 23 year wait for a second winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase when Blaklion triumphed under Ryan Hatch in 2016. The 2020 winner was from familiar sources - Champ flew home late on for Nicky Henderson and owner JP McManus in one of the finishes of The Festival. Monkfish took the race back to Ireland with a fine performance in 2021 before L’Homme Presse wrestled it back under Charlie Deutsch for Venetia Williams The race stayed in Britain in 2023, as Patrick Neville got his first winner with The Real Whacker.
Willie Mullins now sits on seven wins, after first Fact To File won the race in 2024 and then Lecky Watson in last year’s renewal.

The BetMGM Cup Premier Handicap Hurdle is the first handicap of the afternoon and is a fiercely competitive event – both on the track and in the betting ring! Handicaps exist as an attempt to level the playing field for horses of varying quality, thereby ensuring more competitive racing. All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. The higher the rating, the more weight the horse has to carry - see how The Yellow Clay rated 155, carries 3lb more than the 152-rated Ballyadam.

19 of the past 25 winners had run 9 times or less over hurdles
It often pays to sit prominent in the Coral Cup and this year proved no different, with winner Jimmy Du Seuil up in the vanguard the whole way round. Impose Toi led narrowly as they jumped the final hurdle but Danny Mullins had saved plenty of energy, with the classy sixyear-old powering away impressively to win. Ballyadam always runs well at the Cheltenham Festival, with this year no different as he completed the places in third
Run over two miles, five furlongs 10 hurdles to be jumped
Total prize fund of £110,000 £61,897 to the winner

CROSS COUNTRY MAP

RACE
One of our newer races, the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase for five-year-olds and upwards is run over Cheltenham’s unique cross country course which provides a variety of fences, banks and turns for the runners to negotiate. Run over three miles five furlongs and 56 yards, this cross-country race is considered one for specialists and therefore previous experience of this unique circuit can be considered advantageous.

7 of the past 9 winners wore headgear
17 of the 20 winners were trained in Ireland
9 of the past 14 winners were aged 8 or 9
Gavin Cromwell teamed up with Cross Country specialist Keith Donoghue to land the spoils. In the last ten years, Donoghue’s name appears five times on the roll of honour, so it was no surprise to see him in contention on the well backed favourite Stumptown The pair did look in trouble down the back straight but he has an engine bigger than most and touched down just in front at the last before winning by seven lengths.
Run over three miles, five furlongs & 56 yards. 31 obstacles to be jumped
Total prize fund of £75,000 £39,022 to the winner

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

Today’s Glenfarclas Cross Country Steeplechase is part of a European race series called The Crystal Cup. As well as here at Cheltenham, the series is competed at racecourses across France, Italy, Belgium, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Following today’s event there are just three stages of the current series remaining; Fontainebleau (March 28), Punchestown (April 30) and the final leg at Le Lion D’Angers (May 14).

RACE DESCRIPTION The feature race of the day is the Grade 1 BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase, the championship event for two mile chasers. Some of the leading chasers from Britain and Ireland will be tackling Cheltenham’s unique undulations at breathtaking speed and there will be no hiding places as the cream usually rises to the top. All today’s runners carry 11st 10lb in the absence of any mares.

Solness exhibited his usual front running tactic under JJ Slevin, tracked in second by dual Champion Chase winner Energumene, until he took it up at the seventh. The ninth fence saw Jonbon make a terrible mistake that ended any chance of him winning the contest. Quilixios moved into the lead but a crashing fall at the last meant it was Marine Nationale who was left on his own to score in splendid isolation. Run over one mile, seven furlongs & 199 yards. 13 fences to be jumped. Total prize fund of £400,000 £225,080 to the winner

Whilst Friday’s Gold Cup is all about stamina, this afternoon’s BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase focuses on speed, with Europe’s top two-mile chasers hoping to add their name to an illustrious Roll of Honour.
The Dan Moore-trained Quita Que won the inaugural National Hunt Two-Mile Champion Chase in 1959 under Bunny Cox before Tom Dreaper, the leading trainer in the race, and Pat Taaffe teamed up with Fortria to become the first multiple winner of the race in 1960 and 1961. Ever since then there have been many multiple winners of this two mile chase; Drinny’s Double achieving the same feat for trainer Bob Turnell and jockey Frank Nash in 1967 and 1968.
Fred Winter trained his one and only Champion Chase winner in 1971 when Paul Kelleway partnered Crisp to victory, who two years later suffered an agonising defeat by Red Rum in the 1973 Grand National.
The Edward Courage-trained Royal Relief became the first horse in the race’s history to regain his title after winning under Bill Smith in 1972 and 1974. Skymas recorded back-to-back wins for trainer Brian Lusk and jockey Mouse Morris in 1976 and 1977 and became the oldest winner, at twelve, on the second of those occasions. The Peter McCreery-trained Hilly Way picked up the baton immediately afterwards winning under Tommy Carmody in 1978 and Ted Walsh in 1979.
The Queen Mother, whose Game Spirit finished runner-up in the race in 1976, had been an unwavering supporter of National Hunt racing and in 1980 the race was renamed the Queen Mother Champion Chase in celebration of her 80th birthday. Up until her death she was always on hand to give out the trophy each season.
The Robert Earnshaw-ridden Badsworth Boy dominated the race in the early 1980s, winning for three years in succession between 1983 and 1985 for the Dickinson family and he remains the most successful horse in the history of the race. At the end of the 1980s there were two more back-to-back winners of the race Pearlyman tasted glory for John Edwards in 1987 and 1988 and the David Elsworth-trained Barnbrook Again followed suit in 1989 and 1990.
David Nicholson broke his duck in 1994 when Viking Flagship galloped to victory under Adrian Maguire and he didn’t have to wait long for his second when the same horse followed up 12 months later in the hands of Charlie Swan.
The Jessica Harrington-trained Moscow Flyer stamped his authority on the race in 2003 before disappointing punters 12 months later when unseating Barry Geraghty. He returned in 2005 and duly made amends, becoming the joint-second oldest winner of the race
In more recent seasons Barry Geraghty has been a leading force. In 2010, he partnered the Colm Murphy-trained Big Zeb to something of a surprise success before teaming up with Nicky Henderson in 2012 and 2013 with Finian’s Rainbow and Sprinter Sacre respectively That took his tally to five making him joint-leading jockey with Pat Taaffe
And who can forget the 2016 renewal when Sprinter Sacre completed the greatest of comebacks by becoming only the third horse to regain his Champion Chase crown. The ten-year-old had endured a difficult time since winning the race for the first time in 2013 but produced a brilliant display under Nico de Boinville to send the crowd into raptures
Altior gave Nico and trainer Nicky Henderson wins in 2018 & 2019, but his absence saw Politologue take the crown back to Ditcheat in 2020, giving Paul Nicholls a sixth Champion Chase win and owner, the late John Hales, a third after One Man and Azertyuiop had won the race for him in 1998 and 2004 respectively Henry de Bromhead has tasted success in recent years, Special Tiara in 2017 has since been joined by Put The Kettle On in 2021 and then by Captain Guinness last year. Energumene joined an illustrious list of dual winners in 2023 and in doing so gave Willie Mullins back-to-back victories in the race.
Barry Connell tasted success with his 2024 Supreme winner Marine Nationale, in his absence, we will see a new name on the trophy this year

The Debenhams Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup is a Premier Handicap Steeple Chase, named in honour of the late Johnny Henderson, the father of Nicky Henderson and the man who helped safeguard the future of Cheltenham racecourse in the 1960s, is the oldest race that takes place at The Festival. This handicap chase is run over two miles on the Old Course and is often run at a frantic pace The race has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards and is often one of the most thrilling races of the whole week.

4 of the past 9 winners had run over hurdles earlier that season 12 of the past 14 winners were rated between 135-147
Jazzy Matty bagged his second Festival handicap after the 2023 Fred Winter, doing so in equally as impressive fashion. He moved smoothly into a narrow lead two out, before then finding plenty to fend off Unexpected Party who had given Harry Skelton an excellent spin but ultimately was not as well handicapped this time around, which showed in the finish. Midnight It Is completed the podium for Gavin Cromwell

Plenty to consider in what is a typically-intriguing renewal. JAZZY MATTY won this decisively as a novice last season and has likely had this race as his long-term target again having been campaigned mainly over hurdles. First-season chasers could have a major say once more, with Be Aware and Vanderpoel prominent on the shortlist. Several of the Irish runners clashed in a Leopardstown handicap five weeks ago, with Inthepocket and Ballysax Hank shaping best.

The Grade 1 Weatherbys Champion Bumper is the classiest race of its nature run anywhere in the world, and many past winners have developed into top-class hurdlers and chasers. A bumper, officially known as a National Hunt Flat Race, takes place without any hurdles or fences and is aimed at young horses that are likely to develop into jumpers. Only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run If they have run in flat races or have turned out in hurdle races or chases, they are barred from entry.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.
All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation.
Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency Hospital.
