Welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse as we kick off 2026. Firstly, we would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the festive period. The last few days have delivered some superb racing, none more so than our colleagues at Kempton Park, who staged one of the most dramatic renewals of the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase in recent memory. An incredible performance from The Jukebox Man ensured a thrilling finish, and we very much hope to see him, and several other stars return here in March. We have more high-quality racing on offer today, headlined by the Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase, a race that always delivers intrigue and depth. This year’s renewal features a number of fascinating contenders, including last month’s extraordinary 33/1 December Gold Cup winner, Glengouley, who bids to repeat his heroic performance back here at Cheltenham. Elsewhere on the card, we have another highly competitive running of the Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle. Last year’s winner Lucky Place returns to hurdles following an switch to fences earlier this season, but he faces an intriguing rival in Kabral Du Mathan, an exciting new contender in the staying hurdle division. Today’s contest could provide a significant pointer towards future Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle prospects. Before racing gets underway, be sure to head to the Parade Ring for the Raceday Preview Show with Martin Kelly and Aly Vance, joined by racing greats and special guests who will run through today’s card in detail. Away from the track, there is plenty to enjoy throughout the day. The Family Fun Zone located in The Village offers a jam-packed programme of entertainment, including Phil the Elf’s Christmas Show, delivering an action-packed hour of giggles and magic, as well as the chance to meet The Gruffalo at intervals throughout the day, plus many more activities for children of all ages. Live music features prominently across the racecourse today. In the Guinness Village, Cheltenham favourites Lampa return, performing pre-racing, between races and post-racing with a mix of Irish favourites and greatest hits. In the Tattersalls Sales Arena, enjoy live music between races and post-racing, while racecourse favourite Richard James brings feel-good classics guaranteed to raise the roof. After racing, make your way to the Centaur, where Tommy and The Fuse will perform an hour of uplifting acoustic tunes to help you ease into the New Year. Don’t rush off after the last race, many bars, including Big Bucks, Vestey and Arkle remain open for one hour after racing, so whether you’re enjoying live music or a pint, the fun doesn’t have to end when the racing does. THE RACEIQ JUMP INDEX The rise of statistics in sport has transformed how sporting events are broadcast, played, and followed and data has become essential for performance analysis and planning. RaceiQ’s metrics aim to bring horse racing to a modern, data-savvy audience. The metrics are all powered by GPS trackers carried on every horse and produce:

LENGTHS GAINED JUMPING (LGJ) The lengths gained, or lost, by a horse at each obstacle in a race, relative to the ﬁeld.

JUMP INDEX This quantiﬁes a horse’s jumping ability at each obstacle, in a race, and throughout its career as a score out of ten. It compares the efficiency, speed and ﬂuency of a horse’s jumps against all those recorded in the RaceiQ database.

SPEED LOST The difference in a horse’s speed (in mph) from entering the Jumping Envelope (the area 30m before and after a fence) to landing.

ENTRY SPEED The horse’s speed (in mph) when entering the Jumping Envelope.

FINISHING SPEED PERCENTAGE (FSP) The speed a horse completes the final four furlongs in comparison to the whole race; An FSP of 110% reflects a horse covering the final furlongs 10% quicker than they travelled through the race as a whole.

STRIDE LENGTH The distance a horse covers with a full cycle of a stride. We can measure both the average and peak stride length of a horse (in metres). These can be used to analyse previous runs and attempt to predict future performance. A great example was Ballyburn at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival. His career Jump Index of 6.8 out of 10 before the race was lower than all but one of his rivals, and on the day, he scored a Jump Index of 5.8 out of 10, which was the worst of the seven runners. The Lengths Gained Jumping metric then quantified the impact of this poor jumping, highlighting that despite only finishing eight and a half lengths behind the winner, Lecky Watson, he forfeited nearly 20 lengths to him through slow jumping in the race. We are delighted to be using the RaceIQ data specific to Cheltenham for the first time this season. It will enhance the racegoers experience and bring a whole new aspect to race analysis for our visitors each day.

No cash refunds will be given on the day, but will be administered by post after the meeting. Applications for refunds should be sent within one month after the ﬁxture except for The Festival when refunds will be processed automatically. RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualiﬁed paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
