Cheltenham Racecard - Saturday 24th January

Page 1

WELCOME TO

Welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for Festival Trials Day.

Festival Trials Day marks the final opportunity to see many of the sport’s leading horses compete on Cheltenham Racecourse ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. While March will inevitably bring its own surprises, today’s racing often provides some of the strongest clues as to which horses may return here to defend their titles, and which emerging contenders could make their mark over the four days of the Festival

Today’s eight-race card is as compelling as it gets outside of March, with every contest serving as a direct trial for a Cheltenham Festival race We are also delighted to add further depth to the programme with the rearranged Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase from The November Meeting, enhancing what is already a fascinating and informative day of racing

The Unibet Hurdle needs little introduction and promises to be one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the winter Featuring two of the most talked-about horses in training, Sir Gino and The New Lion, today’s contest should provide invaluable insight ahead of the Unibet Champion Hurdle in March. The feature race of the day, the Betfair Cotswold Steeple Chase, also carries huge intrigue, as last year’s winner L’Homme Presse returns to take on the talented Grey Dawning in a contest that could shape the Gold Cup picture in the weeks ahead

Away from the track, we are proud to be hosting the 2026 RoR Awards here on Festival Trials Day. Retraining of Racehorses is British racing’s official charity, dedicated to the welfare of retired racehorses, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks for the vital work they do To help ensure that no former racehorse faces an uncertain future after racing, we encourage you to support their Silent Auction taking place today.

Before racing begins, head to the Parade Ring at 11:25am for the Preview Show, featuring James Mackie, Cheltenham heroine and our very own Head of Ladies Day, Rachael Blackmore, legendary trainer Paul Nicholls, who will share their insights and views on today’s action

Once racing concludes, don’t rush away. Head to the Centaur to enjoy an hour of live music from Freeman, performing feel-good classics and crowd favourites – the perfect way to round off a great day at Cheltenham. Many bars across the racecourse will remain open after racing, allowing you to continue the celebrations.

We are extremely grateful to today’s sponsors: Betfair, Timeform, JCB, Unibet, Glenfarclas, AIS and Pertemps Network, whose continued support is greatly appreciated.

The next time we welcome you back will be for the Cheltenham Festival itself We are approaching the end of our current ticket price window, so if you have not yet secured your place, we encourage you to book by 5 February to save

Thank you for joining us today and enjoy what promises to be a superb Festival Trials Day at Cheltenham Racecourse

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 10th - Friday 13th March

BETTING EXPLAINED

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

The last 5 winners of the Timeform Novices’ Handicap Chase have gone on to finish first or second at the Festival in March. BARLOVENTO would have been a more convincing winner at Kempton on Boxing Day but for fluffing the last so a 4lb rise may not stop him with further progress likely The prospect of a stronger pace now moving into a handicap could bring about improvement from Califet En Vol and he can fill the forecast spot ahead ofJordans Cross.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
