TODAY’S RACING

TODAY’S SPONSORS

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

As we say goodbye to March, the weather still seems to be bringing us all four seasons in one day, so be prepared if you are venturing out to see the horses. We are looking forward to our Easter Festival next week with racing on Thursday and Friday afternoon; on Good Friday we have £250,000 in prize money up for grabs and two of our races will be shown live on ITV. These festival fixtures form part of the highlights of our year, so please do come along and join in the fun.

We have seven races for you this evening with a particularly competitive-looking maiden to start proceedings, featuring some interesting unraced horses. The following six races are all wide open handicaps with quite a few course specialists in there, who are always worth following.

Good luck and I hope you have a lovely evening.

For more information about any of our upcoming events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS

Blue Deveron sets the form standard based on his debut second at Southwell and it may well have been the case that he was turned out too quickly on his other outing at Wolverhampton. That said, he faces some interesting newcomers, with HALLANDALE BEACH getting the vote. He is related to plenty of winners and is from a yard whose string has been hitting the crossbar of late. The Untamed and Romeo’s Guardian are others to consider

DECLARED RUNNERS 11 2025: I MAXIMUS 3 9 3 Rob Hornby 4-7 (Richard Hughes) 8 ran Hood worn first time by No. 10

Stewards Note:

MY MATE MACKLEY: Following its run on 17/3/2026 it was reported that the horse hung right-handed.

MILITZIE: Following its run on 3/3/2026 it was reported that the horse ran green.

Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Blue Deveron (GB), 4-1 Hallandale Beach (GB), 5-1 The Untamed (IRE), 15-2 Militzie (GB), 17-2 Romeo’s Guardian (GB), 14-1 Moscow Power (GB), 18-1 Sargent Dennis (IRE), 28-1 Admirable Fellow (GB), 66-1 Fenay Bridge (IRE), Hever Beauty (GB), 150-1 My Mate Mackley (GB)

Having shaped with plenty of promise when second on debut, BLUE DEVERON may have found the quick turnaround against him at Wolverhampton next time. He’s well worth another chance to get back on the up. Newcomers, The Untamed and Hallandale Beach are others on the shortlist, while Moscow Power is surely capable of better again as a 3-y-o judged on his debut form.

Great British Bonus Scheme

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

CITY SELECTIONS

COMBUSTION hasn’t looked back since his return in December with Chelsea Banham’s gelding landing a hat-trick of victories, the latest of those coming at Kempton, and a 3lb rise doesn’t appear to be overly harsh. Lazzar got back to winning ways at the same circuit and is respected with cheekpieces reapplied but it wouldn’t be a huge shock if Supreme King (fifth) reversed the form, especially due to the fact he was unable to get a clear run.

No shortage of in-form sorts with COMBUSTION shading preference. He continued on his upward curve when making it a remarkable 7 wins from his last 9 starts at Kempton 4 weeks ago. A further 3lb rise shouldn’t prevent another bold bid in a race expected to be run to suit. Lazzar, Hunky Dory and Supreme King are others expected to be firmly in the mix.

CITY SELECTIONS

Having finished a never-nearer fourth on her handicap bow at Wolverhampton recently, IN DENIAL could be ready to open her account. Mark Loughnane’s filly was only beaten a length and she makes plenty of appeal racing off an unchanged mark. Faithful Dream is more than capable of being in the mix if repeating the level of his Kempton second on his penultimate start, while Go Lockers Go is expected to have improved from a break over the winter

CITY SELECTIONS

SMOKEY MALONE won his last three starts by pretty fine margins and has only gone up 9lb in total for those exertions. This isn’t much tougher than the race he won here last month and another bold showing looks likely Angelardo got off the mark at Newcastle over an extended 2m and should also be a key player if cutting back in trip doesn’t cause issues. El Ghaawy and King’s Cruiser complete the shortlist.

CLOVER TIME and Initial Blue both like to be on the front end and can make this a searching test. The latter has the better record on Polytrack and must be taken seriously, despite being 8lb above his last winning mark. However, Mick Appleby’s four-year-old has gone well here before now and could offer better value from an attractive rating. Fiorella Princess and Diamond Dreamer are other appealing options.

Cheekpieces have transformed the fortunes of ZIPWIRE and the hat-trick seeking three-year-old could be tough to overhaul if he handles reverting to Polytrack after a brace of Wolverhampton successes. Aneirin’s Sword was a close-up second behind the selection last time out and has a feasible chance of turning the form around on the revised terms. Port Darwin might have needed the run at Kempton last month and is one to keep an eye on in the betting.
