TODAY’S RACING

Race 8.00pm 26 - 27

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

This evening is our last meeting in February and our eyes are turning towards spring with the prospect of some more clement weather and the beginning of our events calendar.

A week on Saturday features our first UK Garage raceday Join us for an evening of racing, followed by a live performance by the pioneers of the genre, Artful Dodger.

On Thursday, 2nd April, and Good Friday, 3rd April, we have a two day Easter Festival with prize money of a quarter of a million pounds on offer on the Friday alone; this will be two days of fantastic racing with some of the top horses in the country chasing that prize money.

April continues to deliver top class racing with the popular Cardinal Stakes on Thursday, 23rd April, which was won last year by the John Gosden trained, Detain. Then, the following Thursday, we have the Listed Chelmer Stakes, which was won last year by the Joseph O’Brien trained, Lady with the Lamp; this race was won three years ago by Believing, before she went on to be one of the best sprinters in the world.

Come and join us for all the action.

For more information about any of our upcoming events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

FELIX GEM showed the benefit of his debut with a close second over an extended 1m1f at Wolverhampton last month. Another step forward can see him get off the mark at the third time of asking. Tamashal caught the eye on his debut here earlier in the month and is entitled to be wiser, while Blue Celestial, who posted her best effort yet at Kempton last time, reverts to a mile with the potential to kick on.

FELIX GEM left his debut form well behind when narrowly denied at Wolverhampton 6 weeks ago and looks the one to beat with further progress anticipated dropped back to 1m. Blue Celestial took another big step forward when third at Kempton, while Irish Incentive was unlucky not to finish a lot closer at Musselburgh on debut.

This represents a drop in class for CRISTO, which may be enough for the 83-rated gelding to blow this seller apart if he is anywhere near his best. A tongue-tie and visor combination was instrumental in Zoffandia returning to winning ways at Kempton last week and he should be another key player if the retained headgear has the same impact. Hitched and Good Banter are still dangerous to rule out, despite their best all-weather form being posted elsewhere.

CITY OF GOD has evidently had his problems but he did enough to suggest he retains his ability at Wolverhampton last month so shades the vote over Epictetus, who is also favoured by these terms. Zoffandia landed a gamble at Kempton last week and would be a big threat if able to back that up.

THECOFFEEPODDOTCO is hard to oppose after a comfortable win over 5f at Lingfield last time and he can brush aside a manageable 4lb rise. Cressida Wildes caries a 5lb penalty for her Wolverhampton success and also should be capable of another bold showing in this company General Assembly doesn’t have much to find to be on the premises, while Fiorella Princess tends to go well here and merits a betting check.

CITY SELECTIONS

Poetic Jack is better judged on his penultimate second over C&D and a repeat of that display would see him enter the reckoning. However, the vote goes to FLICKA’S GIRL. The latter won at this level over 5f here in January and has not been disgraced in two handicaps since. On that evidence, the four-year-old could take plenty of stopping. Little Miss Magic is the pick of the remainder.
