Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse HAPPY NEW YEAR We wish you a very warm welcome to our first fixture of 2026, as we look forward to an exciting afternoon of racing today and another fantastic year of racing at Chelmsford City Racecourse. On Good Friday, 3rd April, we have the first of our bigger racedays with ITV coverage and £250,000 in prize money on offer. On Thursday, 30th April, we have the Listed Chelmer Stakes, featuring some of the best sprinting fillies in the country, looking for black type. Thursday, 18th June, sees the return of our ever-popular Ladies Day. Sunday, 5th July, has the Listed Queen Charlotte Stakes, won previously by top-class fillies such as Billesdon Brook and Highfield Princess. After the success of our Sunday Series fixture in 2025, we have the ITV cameras here again for seven races on Sunday, 2nd August. We hope that you will join us for as many of the days as possible and look forward to an unforgettable year of racing.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Our Commitment to Horse Welfare At Chelmsford City Racecourse, the welfare of our horses is our highest priority, and this commitment is most visible in the continuous improvements made to our All-Weather racing surface. The surface has been expertly rewaxed and enhanced with added fibre to reduce kickback and improve safety. Additionally, the pedestrian crossing over the track was replaced early on with an underpass from the ticket office to the concourse, ensuring a safer experience for both horses and racegoers. Every raceday, three qualified equine vets are on duty, closely monitoring the action and ready to respond within moments should an incident occur. We always maintain two equine ambulances and three for jockeys on-site, supported by permanent veterinary boxes and, during major fixtures, on-site X-ray facilities for swift diagnosis and care. Hydration and recovery are also carefully managed, with ample water and multiple washdown stations available to help horses cool down immediately after racing. Chelmsford City Racecourse works with the British Horseracing Authority, Great British Racing, RSPCA, World Horse Welfare, and the Horse Welfare Board to champion world-class equine care. British Racing has invested over £56 million since 2000 in veterinary research and education, improving safety for all horses—not just racehorses. We remain committed to the highest standards of welfare, both on and off the track. At Chelmsford City, the horses come first—always.

In the Fairwood Brasserie, smart casual attire is acceptable, no trainers are permitted. Casual wear is permitted within the Sports Bar but we ask you to refrain from wearing club replica shirts at Chelmsford City Racecourse. Shirts must be worn at all times. Tailored shorts are acceptable for general admission only, but no shorts are to be worn within the hospitality areas. No sports shorts or ﬂip ﬂops are permitted, along with no team shirts. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES In the event of an incident occurring which necessitates the partial or total evacuation of any area of the racecourse, announcements will be broadcast over the public address system. Our staff, aided by the uniformed security will implement the carefully planned evacuation procedures and undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety. It is essential and a requirement that you follow their instructions. If you are able please take your belongings with you and proceed as directed out of the area as quickly and quietly as possible.
