Friday 10th February 2023 Official Programme £3.00
One of the most notable points of interest, for me, looking through the card each week is how many horses, once they have run well here, either win or go very close to winning in their subsequent runs. There are nine horses running tonight that have won here previously: Bond Boy won here eight days ago, Engrave was second two months ago, James Bradley won here a month ago and Channel Packet was third a month ago.
However, one of the most interesting horses running tonight is the admirably consistent Jenson Benson. He is a firm favourite amongst us all at Chelmsford, having won all three of his races here, as well as being placed second and third twice. Unfortunately, the price he pays for his consistency is that he looks to be in the grip of the handicapper, as he is five pounds higher than any of his previous winning marks. Nevertheless, we shall be cheering him home tonight and wherever he finishes, I am sure that we shall see him back in the winners’ enclosure before too long.
I hope you have a lovely evening.

TFRHHIII BHA-
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

James Bradley struck here off 3lb lower last month and he followed it up with a good third at Wolverhampton on his latest outing. He’s respected returned to this venue, but a chance is taken on YOU SAW BRIGADOON. The son of Kingman looks sure to relish the step up in trip on his handicap bow and an opening mark of 55 ought to be within range. Fadi has the ability to feature and he enters calculations too.

FAST STYLE was far from disgraced at Newcastle last month and, down in class, Michael Appleby’s charge is fancied to regain the winning thread. Engrave recorded a narrow success at the same venue on her latest outing and she enters the reckoning once again, along with Jenson Benson, who has been running to a consistent level in recent starts. Absolute Ruler has tumbled down the handicap of late and he can’t be ruled out either

JENSON BENSON didn’t enjoy the rub of the green when sixth at Wolverhampton last time so this course winner gets the vote off a handy-looking mark. Engrave is always to be much respected round here and next on the list, with Giorgio Vasari and Fast Style appealing as best equipped to fight it out for minor honours.

Phoenix Glow is an interesting contender on her return from a break, as she showed up well at Kempton in a nursery on her penultimate start over this trip and goes off the same mark. However, preference is for GOOSE ROCK, who is having his second start after a wind operation and stayed on strongly at Newcastle last time out, so is taken to take a step forward. THE MINISTRY OF SOUND DISCO 2ND SEPTEMBER HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) for
CITY SELECTIONS
Channel Packet hasn’t been disgraced in classified stakes races the last twice and is one to consider returning to handicap company Preference, however, is for SIMPLY GORGEOUS. The filly made an encouraging stable debut when running on for fourth in a 0-65 at Kempton last month and she could appreciate this drop in class. C&D winner Dark Kris is another to consider now returned to this venue.
Leading course trainer (17-22): M Appleby (78 wins from 629 runners, 12%) runs CHANNEL PACKET
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Appleby (7 wins from 43 runners, 16%) runs CHANNEL PACKET
Weightwatcher: CHANNEL PACKET won off a handicap mark of 62, his rating is now down 15lb to 47.
