This evening is our last meeting of November before we return on 1st December and begin the run-up to Christmas in earnest. There are 8 races for you, beginning with an interesting contest for two year olds. They have all run before but without winning; however, Majestic Pride, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by James Doyle, has form that looks far in advance of any of the others. He finished second first time out in, what looks, a decent Newmarket maiden, being beaten under two lengths and, assuming he can build on that performance, he should take all the beating.
Then, we have seven straight handicaps for you with the 6.30pm race, the Betsi Handicap, as our feature race. This Class 2, 6 furlong handicap, with £25,000 in prize money on offer has some smart performers in it. There are only 5 runners but they all could win this; Shallow Hal and See You Boy have been in good form recently but the fact that Soldier’s Minute has come all the way down from Scotland may be a tip in itself and he is ably assisted by Kevin Stott, who has been in storming form here at Chelmsford recently. Good luck and have a great evening.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Chagall just prevailed by a short head on his most recent run over this course and distance and a 5lb penalty leaves him vulnerable. Therefore, it is easier to side with LAURENTIA, who kept on well for second on her latest outing last month despite being denied a clear run over two furlongs out. Arpina has dropped 1lb following a decent third over 7f earlier this month and should also be noted.

A tricky big-field handicap with the narrow vote in favour of LAURENTIA. A winner over C&D in September, she again ran well when runner-up at this venue 3 weeks ago and, from a handy draw, she can come out on top. Chagall made it first time lucky for his new yard over C&D recently and is feared along with Jeanette May Book of Verse and Arpina are others worth keeping an eye on.

See You Boy won on Polytrack during his time in France, so needs a betting check on debut on these shores, while May Sonic and Shallow Hal are both capable at this level and merit serious consideration. However, SOLDIER’S MINUTE has a healthy strike-rate on the all-weather and, given that he’s won when returning from a break before, Keith Dalgleish’s charge edges the vote.
Leading course trainer (17-22): R Hannon (30 wins from 305 runners, 10%) runs VENTURA TORMENTA Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (3 wins from 17 runners, 18%) runs SHALLOW HAL

SEE YOU BOY was a useful performer in France for Christophe Ferland and he looks on a fair mark ahead of his British/yard debut. Shallow Hal was running well in defeat in the spring and should be in the mix again back on AW. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.SEE YOU BOY 2.SHALLOW HAL 3.SOLDIER’S MINUTE

PANDEMIC PRINCESS caught the eye with her finishing effort when runner-up over C&D on return/yard debut 12 days ago and she’s one to be interested in if taking up this engagement (Engaged to run 8.30 Kempton Wednesday). Should she not line up, recent Wolverhampton 1-2 Rattling and El Hombre should play lead roles again, whilst Yimou and last year’s winner Helvetian are others to keep an eye on.
The fitting of blinkers could unlock progression from Angle Land and the Robert Cowell-trained filly merits serious consideration in a competitive sprint. However, fellow three-year-old BETHERSDEN BOY has shown consistency since racing in headgear and he is fancied to gain compensation for three recent near misses on the all-weather. Dark Side Prince and Second Collection are others with sound claims at this level, while Expert Opinion adds further spice.

ANGLE LAND has been knocking on the door lately and a change of headgear could eke out that bit extra required to get her head in front. She’s marginally preferred to the in-form Vape, with Bethersden Boy also on the shortlist in a tightly-knit sprint handicap.

Although Sun Festival was knocking on the door when last seen, finishing runner-up on his last three appearances, the son of Toronado has plenty to prove after a break. With that in mind, preference is for OVERSTATE, who bumped into an in-form opponent at this venue last time out. The three-year-old gets a tentative vote to go one better off an unchanged mark, while Belisa De Vega is another to consider

SUN FESTIVAL was shaping up well under an inexperienced rider when last seen and, despite a 145-day absence, he’s worth a chance to defy his current mark with Josephine Gordon taking over. Overstate arrives in good order and should post another solid effort, while Belisa de Vega remains of interest despite coming up short in her hat-trick bid last time.

Although COSTA ADEJE was no match for an improving rival when runner-up last time out at Wolverhampton, the three-year-old appeared to appreciate the step up in trip and may be able to shed the maiden tag at the 21st time of asking. Considering that form has been advertised handsomely, the son of Cotai Glory may be underestimated by a mark of 51. Persian Wolf and Catch My Breath are capable on their day and also warrant respect.
