WELCOME

A very warm welcome to you all joining us for the opening of our 2025 season; how quickly the time passes!

I must give thanks as ever to our sponsors today :

Sticky Toffee Pudding

Hadwins Motor Group

Bowness Bay Brewing

Family and Friends of John Fogg

The team have been busy refurbishing the stables and saddling boxes and working to make sure the site looks up to the standards you have a right to expect. Given the unusually long dry spell we have experienced, they have been conscientiously irrigating over the past few weeks – I am especially grateful to them for the very long hours they have put in to make the track safe for both horses and jockeys.

We have two Charities on site today; The Injured Jockeys Fund and The North West Air Ambulance, I would encourage you to visit their stands and learn more about the support and help they offer; it is our pleasure and privilege to help organisations fundraise at our race days

You will also see that we are hosting the inaugural fixture of the very first Summer Jumps Championship here today – this is an initiative which has been created by the racetracks and the RCA, to shine a spotlight on the Summer Jumps Season and to create a simple and very accessible competition for all participants. I do hope you will follow the action through the Summer, not just here but at the other participating racecourses

All that remains is to thank you for joining us today and to wish you the best of luck.

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 0 to 125. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

BELLBIRD bounced back to form when third at Bangor last time and has already gone close in handicap company from this sort of mark. The return of Brian Hughes can see her land a second hurdles success at the expense of hat-trick seeking D Day Arvalenreeva who remains unexposed despite a hike in grade, with Lahinch Wave, likely to be ridden more positively down in trip, not discounted if able to dictate on the front end as she did on hurdles debut.

(CLASS 4) (GBB RACE)

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and six furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Leading course trainer (20-25): J Moffatt (34 wins from 191 runners, 18%) runs CAUGHTINYOURTRANCE & KALO ATHENA & SKY LUNA Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Bowen (5 wins from 10 runners, 50%) runs GETAWAY VIC Longest Traveller: GETAWAY VIC trained by M Bowen, Haverfordwest, 262 miles.

GETAWAY VIC has impressed in bumpers, winning 2 of his three starts, and can make a successful hurdle debut with his pedigree suggesting the step up in trip will suit. Maggies Boy has been knocking on the door in handicaps recently and looks ready for a breakthrough win, so warrants plenty of respect, with My Friend Yeats another potential threat if returning to the sort of form he showed at Catterick in the winter

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Race Description This is a three miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 0 to 125. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 125 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 120.

Owners Prize Money 1st £5917, 2nd £2958, 3rd £1480, 4th £740. (Penalty Value £7736.66)

Race Description This is a three miles and two furlongs handicap hurdle race/steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS’ WINNERS 2024

JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE

TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE

Regulars to Cartmel will be familiar with our Season-long competition for the Top Jockey and Trainer Points are awarded for each race with 3 to the winner, 2 for second place and 3 for third. The prize for the winner of each is a stay in the beautiful Swan Hotel and Spa in nearby Newby Bridge

We had a first time winner in the competition to be Top Jockey, with Sean Quinlan landing last year’s prize. Sean rode a combined 6 winners last season for both his wife Lizzie and for Jennie Candlish, both partnerships giving multiple successes. There were many races where fortunes changed in the closing stages where his strong rides won the day. Sean will be going all-out to retain top spot

The title was taken from Sean Bowen. We wish to offer our congratulations to the newly crowned Champion Jockey This was after going close the previous year despite having a long spell out through injury He rode his first winner here and is sure to be around the top of the leaderboard this year, supported by his family’s stable and other powerful yards.

Fan favourite Charlotte Jones will be amongst the winners here again this season Riding for local Trainer Jimmy Moffatt, Charlotte had a red letter day here last season where she rode out her Claim when riding her 75th winner Richie McLernon will also be in the running for the title after riding 5 winners for the strong Ben Haslam team.

We had a new winner of the Angela Robinson Trophy for the top Trainer last season, with Ben Haslam finishing first after the closest finish we have had. Ben was successful from Jimmy Moffatt who was looking to win for the 7th time in a row. Ben made a strong start to the campaign with a number of early winners to be at the head of the leaderboard, and Jimmy by his own admission had a slow start. That all changed in the last few race days with Jimmy firing in winners and a number of points gained from placed runners to tighten up the score. The result went down to the very last race with all sorts of permutations still possible Jimmy’s horse Cuzco Du Mathan won the race to tie up the scores on 33 points each, but on a countback Ben was the winner with more first places throughout the year These two popular Trainers are both great supporters of racing here and are sure to be firing in the winners again this season

In third place was another popular local Trainer Lizzie Quinlan One of the highlights of the season came from Lizzie, who trained City Derby to win an incredible 4 races. She does exceptionally well with her horses, and Lizzie will be one to watch and in the race for the Trainers title Other Cumbrian success will come from Dianne Sayer. There are always happy scenes when these yards win with a packed winners’ enclosure

Keep up to date on your favourite Jockey & Trainers’ standings with updated scores on the board near the weighing room each meeting.

Race Description This two miles, one furlong handicap steeple chase has been designed for novice five-year-olds and upwards Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
