Lord Cavendish, Chairman Cartmel Steeplechases (Holker) Ltd
the cheers went up when Jelski won in the Manna House Handicap Chase The popular veteran has been a regular here for many years landing his fifth Cartmel win. Charlotte gave a strong ride to prevail by a narrow margin to the delight of her followers
What a day it was on our last days racing for Charlotte Jones. From her 5 rides she rode 2 winners and 3 seconds, all of course trained by Jimmy Moffatt. Everyone on the racecourse seemed to be happy, with maybe the exception of the Bookmakers! Charlotte jumped from sharing second position in the Jockeys Challenge to having clear daylight at the top and leads by 7 points.
Charlottes first success was on the popular Secret Secret in the Greenbanks Arbiculture Handicap Hurdle The winner was following up on last year’s success in this race, and didn’t look like being beaten as soon as Charlotte kicked on after the last
After a couple of near misses in second place
Two other Jockeys had successful days riding doubles. The 3-time Champion Jockey Brian Hughes’ first win was on Rioja Alta in a driving finish in the second division of the Greenbanks Arbiculture Handicap Hurdle He then followed up when Sea The Clouds was a decisive victor in the Weatherbys Hamilton Handicap Chase Brian shares second place with current Champion Jockey Sean Bowen.
The biggest cheers in many a year were for the Richie McLernon ridden At Vimeiro in the Furness Building Society 160th Anniversary Maiden Hurdle The Cartmel Racecourse and Old Gold Racing-owned winner was greeted by joyous scenes from the syndicate members, who filled the winners enclosure to celebrate. Richie rode the perfect waiting race and held his nerve until halfway up the straight to kick for a decisive success. His other victory on Lightning Company in the Cumbria Grand Hotel Handicap was more hard work and the double sees Richie climb the table with 19 points.

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE
Cartmel Trainer Jimmy Moffatt looks to have stranglehold on the Trainers Challenge after a day to remember. Jimmy not only had 3 winners, but a number of placed horses saw Jimmy get a mammoth 17 points on the day, putting a sizeable gap to second place It would be a long time since this daily total has been achieved, if it all.
Jimmy’s first success was with Secret Secret in the Greenbanks Arbiculture Handicap Hurdle, who followed up last year’s success. Then after some near misses, Sea The Clouds lead home a 1-2 in the Weatherbys Hamilton Handicap Chase Jimmy wasn’t finished with having both first and second in an event when Jelski came home in a head bobbing finish in the concluding Manna House Handicap from another Cartmel regular Judicial Review
Jimmy has won the Trainer Challenge 6 times and will be a very short price to see the title return to Pit Farm Stables
Another Trainer who had a successful day with a double was last year’s Challenge winner Ben Haslam The victory of Lightning Company in the Cumbria Grand Handicap was quickly followed by At Vimeiros comfortable win in the Furness Building Society 160th Anniversary Hurdle for the many vocal members of the Cartmel and Old Gold Racing syndicate. Ben has work to do to catch Jimmy but will going all out to retain his title
It was good to see Micky Hammond back in the Winners Enclosure with Rioja Alta in the Greenbanks Arbiculture Handicap Micky has been a supporter of Cartmel for many years and hopefully more successes follow soon

HOW TO PLACE A BET
PLACE YOUR BETS....
Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.
BET IN TWO WAYS -
1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides
HOW TO READ
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

for three yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £7850
Race Description This is a two miles, one furlong and 46 yards handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description This is the second division of Race 1. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

Race Description This is a three miles, one furlong and 83 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

ON THIS RACE
Race Description This is a two miles, one furlong and 46 yards handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place.
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g. £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.
THE JONATHAN & LOUISE SILVER ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE
(CLASS 4) (GBB RACE)
for four yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £10649
Owners Prize Money. 1st £4301, 2nd £2150, 3rd £1076, 4th £538, 5th £268. (Penalty Value £5623.74) Weights raised 3lb and paragraph 34 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable
Race Description This two miles, one furlong and 61 yards handicap steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
Leading course trainer (20-25): J Moffatt (42 wins from 236 runners, 18%) runs CUZCO DU MATHAN & HURRICANE ALI
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): S England (2 wins from 11 runners, 18%) runs GLORY AND HONOUR
Weightwatcher: GLORY AND HONOUR won off a handicap mark of 122, his rating is now down 6lb to 116.
Longest Traveller: NO BUT I WILL trained by R L Llewellyn, Swindon, 272 miles.

Cengiz Sadik Memorial Handicap Chase 23rd August 2025
This year is the 19th anniversary of my son Cengiz’s passing. Cengiz was the king pin of my small family racing operation. During 26 years of training in Ireland and England we had our share of winners.
Cengiz loved Cartmel and rarely missed a meeting, usually coming over from our base in Worcestershire and staying overnight with our horses at the racecourse.
Our most famous horse to win there was Green Go, which he purchased for me from the Czech Republic in 2002. I was dubious whether the horse being a maiden sprinter would stay 2 miles over hurdles, he assured me he would stay.
He brought Green Go to Cartmel for the bank holiday meeting in 2003 and won the 2 mile 5 Beginners Chase on Saturday by 25 lengths. Against my wishes, he twisted my arm to run him again on Monday in the 3 mile 2 Handicap Chase. I said to him “you are pushing your luck running him over a marathon distance” he said “not only will he stay the distance Dad, he will win!” So he stayed over and run Green Go on Monday.
After a night out on Sunday night, Cengiz was found in Green Go’s stable feeding him by hand at 1am. He told his mystified friends that Green Go was off his food and he would not win unless he ate his food.
As history will show Green Go won again on Monday by 25 lengths. I sponsored the race in his memory the year he died in 2006.
I have had a runner in the race for the last 14 years and won it myself in 2008 with Desert Tommy, by 25 lengths amid floods of tears from myself and my wife. I hope to have a runner this year, all being well.
Cartmel has become a place of pilgrimage for me with so many memories of the past and present. I feel always welcomed here and thank Cartmel for keeping my son’s race going for so many years.
The enclosed picture of Cengiz with a horse called My True Romance was taken at Cartmel Racecourse stables on 27th May 2006 the day the horse won.
This was Cengiz’s very last photo, his very last runner and his very last winner Sadly, he took his own life the following month due to the breakdown of his marriage and inability to see his 2 young sons.
THE CENGIZ SADIK MEMORIAL HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 5)

Race Description The final race this afternoon is a two miles, five furlongs and 34 yards handicap steeple chase for four-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-100. As is the case with all handicaps on this afternoon’s card, the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

LA QUARITE took a big step forward for Mickey Bowen when going in at Newton Abbot last month and can add to that success now reverting back to fences off a still handy-looking mark. Veteran Jelski could emerge as the main danger on the back of his recent C&D success with the rejuvenated Judicial Review also in the mix.
