A day at Cartmel Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving
The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:
ALCOHOL & SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Fortunately very few accidents occur at Cartmel Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink. Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol
On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits. Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Cumbria Police
SLIPS, TRIPS, FALLS
parkland, that forms the racecourse, includes many uneven surfaces which may become slippery in wet conditions. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk. Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day.
The most common cause for a visit to our medical tent is sunstroke… Okay, that’s only on hot days. The most common cause, on a normal day, is a grazed knee Many of these incidents involve children aged under five years old or adults that have had one drink too many (see previous point about alcohol). The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight.
ENCLOSURES
We remain very happy that our visitors can travel between enclosures to experience all that Cartmel Racecourse has to offer. However, these routes use the racing surface and we must always make sure that the
horses have fully left thetrack, before we openthe gates to humans. Whilst we are sorry you may need to wait– please understandthat any delays are due to us keeping you safe.
RECYCLING
All of our wasteis recycledat the waste depot sopleasefeel free to use any bin.
TREES
The sceneryatthe racecourseis enhanced by beautifultrees, includingsome very old oaks However, despite clichés such as ‘strong asan oak’ it shouldbenotedthat all treesare capable ofshedding branches with little warning. While we inspect all thetrees on the racecourse annually, we recommend that you do not sit beneaththe branches. We especially ask that neither children, nor adults, swing or climb on the branchesof trees within the parkland.
PARKING

BARBECUES
Every year the firstaid team will treatat least one person with burnt fingers and we will be required to extinguish at least one fire in a wheelie bin. If you intend to bringa barbecue, pleaseensurethat you handle it safely, take care not to scorch the grass and dispose of it in a metal bin– only when itis fully extinguished.
Why do I need to pre-book parking now? Thisisa decision taken by the authorities out-with our control and whatthey are looking forisa record in advance of everyone who is driving a car on-site. Whyis there less car parking on site now? Again, this has been mandated by the external authoritiesin order to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and pedestrians.
WATER
Childrenare naturally attracted by the water in the beck that meandersthrough the Paddock Enclosure For reasonsthat should be obvious, we recommend that childrenare supervisedat all times. We also recommend that anyonepaddlinginthe beck wears shoes or boots to protecttheir feet. Animalsuse the beck upstream (and downstream), so please donot use the beck for washing up your picnic utensils, for drinking or for cleaning yourhands.
HORSES
No gas barbecues or gas canisters are permitted on the racecourse. Please extinguishall BBQs 20 minutes before racingstarts.
CHILDREN
Whilst its brilliant to be up close to the racing action, wewould appreciate you not allowing children to sit on the racetrack perimeter fence. Also – if you seeany damage to racecourse fences, temporary structures or furniture we would appreciate you reporting this damage as soon as possible to a member of our stewarding team.
ABANDONMENT
Horses are big andrun very fast; hopefully yours willrun fastest of all. Please pay attentionwhen in close proximity to the horses: stay on the publicside of any barriers (close to thetrack or horse walk

Jimmy Moffatt is still our clear leader in the Trainers Challenge Big Gypsy Kings win in the Molson Coors Mares Hurdle was followed a further place to stretch the gap to Mickey Bowen in second to 10 points. With 4 days racing left, Jimmy is well on his way to an unprecedented 8th title.
The Training performance of the day was Tristan Davidson The Cumbrian handler always does well at Cartmel, and landed a double to delight his supporters The first victory in the Campbell and Rowley Handicap was a success for Divilabother in a driving finish ridden by Robbie Dunne This was quickly followed by Breizh Rivers’ win in the Oakmere Homes Handicap Chase, this time ridden by Harry Reed Tristan runs at a 25% strike rate with his Cartmel entries, and are always to be respected.
Another mover in the table was Noel Kelly, who has gone up to 3rd place Noel had a number of near misses over the 2 day meeting, but got a well deserved victory in the Womens Community Matters Handicap with Fort Randall to joyous scenes in the winners enclosure
Lambourn handler Harry Derham had only his second runner at Cartmel, but it was a successful one with Filibustering winning the Oakmere Homes Handicap Hurdle in comfortable fashion The winner could be called some way from home to land the valuable prize.
