Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

TRENDSETTERS GUIDE
Previous race trends (2016-25) can often help provide a short-list of potential winners in the current year’s races. The percentage figure after the race details is the favourite’s ‘strike rate’ in the race. Trainers who have won the race before are also highlighted if they had an entry at the final declaration stage. In handicap races, horses that have won off the same/higher mark are flagged as well handicapped with race card numbers given.
Carlisle Trendsetters Guide ~ Thursday 22nd October 1.17 – 2m 1f Novices’ Hurdle (Fav 62%): The race has often been divided into two divisions with 15 races run in the last ten years. 12/15 past winners were 4th or better on their last completed race (another two winners were making their NH debuts) and 14/15 had odds of 9/2 or shorter. 5yo is the preferred age group with 12/15 wins seen. Trainers to watch: D McCain (3 wins), Lucinda Russell (2 wins), J O’Neill (1 win). 1.52 – 2m 1f (Conditional Jockeys) Handicap Hurdle: New race in 2025. Well handicapped: 4. 2.27 – 3m+ Handicap Chase (Fav 35%): 10/10 winners finished 6th or better in their last completed race. In the betting all had odds of 12/1 or shorter with 5/10 being 5/1 or shorter. Dare To Shout won the race last year and has dropped 9lbs in the handicap since that win. Trainer to watch: Ann Hamilton (1 win). Well handicapped: 3. 3.02 & 3.37 – 2m 4f Handicap Hurdle: New race in 2025. Trainer to watch: G Rutherford (1 win). Well handicapped: (Div 1) 2-5-10-13. (Div 2) 2-4-7-8. 4.12 – 2m 1f (Listed) Hurdle: New race in 2026. 4.45 – 2m 4f Handicap Chase (Fav 0%):. No favourites have won since 2014 and only one 2nd favourite has won in the last 10 years – that said the field size is much smaller this year. All 10 winners were aged 6-9yo. Also, all 10 winners were 6th or better on their last completed run (including four who were 2nd LTO). Hello Judge won in 2023 and 2025 and is now 6lbs higher in the ratings since the 2025 win. Trainer to watch: Ann Hamilton (2 wins), J O’Neill (1 win). Well handicapped: 3. 5.20 – 2m 1f NH Flat Race (Fav 16%): New race in 2020. Four of the six past winners were aged 5yo and all six had odds of 17/2 or shorter. Four were making their debuts under NH rules and the others were 3rd on their last run. Trainer to watch: D Skelton (1 win).
