WINTER WARMER RACEDAY
MONDAY 6TH FEBRUARY 2023
Official Racecard £2.50
Houston Texas winning at Carlisle on Monday 7th February 2022 for trainer Nicky Richards, Jockey Sean Quinlan and Owner A Crawford
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to Carlisle Racecourse for our Winter Warmer Raceday.
It is fantastic to see racegoers returning to Carlisle for our first fixture of 2023 having not had any racing here since the end of November due to us sadly being forced to abandon our Christmas Jumper Day in MidDecember as a harsh frost swept across the nation
We have an exciting seven race card to look forward to this afternoon featuring the Class 3 Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Mares’ Handicap Chase in which last years’ winner Maid O’Malley from local trainer Stuart Coltherd’s yard is returning to defend her title.
It is great to see so many of you enjoying our Winter Warmer hospitality package today which is also available at our next two fixtures on Monday 20th February and Thursday 9th March. This includes a three-course meal in our Swifts Restaurant for just £60 per person so get in touch with the racecourse to book as these dates are selling quickly!
If you are looking for some delicious locally sourced food whilst you are here don’t forget to visit our Silks Café or Bell Hall where you will find various different hot and cold food options along with beverages and sweet treats served throughout the day.
Another great way to support us at Carlisle is to become an Annual Badge Holder, these packages are available for just £215 per person and this includes guaranteed entry to every racing fixture in 2023 at Carlisle plus many other benefits such as half-price admission to Haydock Park Racecourse and reciprocal visits to over 70 different racecourses. For more information please enquire at the Racecourse Office today.
I hope you have an enjoyable day with us today and look forward to seeing you back here for our next fixture on Monday 20th February
With best wishes,
Helen Willis

TRENDSETTERS GUIDE
MONDAY 6TH FEBRUARY Previous race trends (2013-22) can often help provide a short-list of potential winners in the current year’s races. The percentage figure in brackets after the race details is the favourite’s ‘strike rate’ in the race for the last ten years. Trainers who have won the race before are also highlighted if they had an entry at the final declaration stage
(1.35) 2m 1f Novices’ Hurdle (50%): Due to the weather, this race has been run just six times in the last ten years. The betting market tends to be a good guide for this race with three favourites and two second favourites winning in the last six renewals and all having odds of 5/1 or shorter All six winners were either 1st/2nd /3rd on their last run including four which were 3rd LTO.
Trainers to Watch: M Hammond (won 2016); D McCain (won 2017 & 2020); N Richards (won 2013); J Moffatt (won 2014).
(2.10) 2m Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (80%): New race in 2014 but due to poor weather only run five times before, with four races won by the favourites and the other by the second favourite. All five had also finished 1st/2nd /3rd on their last run.
Trainers to Watch: D McCain (won 2014, 2017 & 2022); J Moffatt (won 2016).
(2.45) 2m 3f+ (Mares) Novices’ Hurdle (50%): Race run six times since 2013. As with the first two races today, the betting market tends to be a good guide for this race with three favourites and two second favourites winning in the last six renewals. All six winners had odds of 6/1 or shorter and were 6th or better on their last run. Brian Hughes has ridden three of the last four winners in this event. Trainer to Watch: D McCain (won 2017 & 2022)
(3.15) 2m 5f (Mares) Handicap Chase (n/a): New race in 2020 and run just twice before. Both winners were 4th or better LTO with odds of 5/1 or shorter Last year’s winner Maid O’Malley again holds an entry although is now 11lbs higher in the handicap ratings. The horse has a great record at Carlisle with form figures of 2212 at the track. Trainer to Watch: S Coltherd (won 2022).
(3.45) 2m 1f Handicap Hurdle (20%): New race in 2014 but due to poor weather only run five times before. All past winners finished 5th or better on their last completed run (excludes falls etc) Three winners had odds of 9/2 or shorter with the others 10/1 & 14/1 shots. All had last run 10-43 days earlier
(4.15) 3m Handicap Chase (n/a): New race in 2022.
(4.45) 2m 1f NH Flat Race (n/a): New race in 2022

THE WEATHERBYS CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL BETTING GUIDE MARES’ HANDICAP CHASE
Just four horses take their chance in today’s feature, the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Mares’ Handicap Chase, a 0-130 contest over a trip just shy of 2m5f
Last year’s winner Maid O’Malley is back to defend her crown, with Stuart Coltherd’s daughter of Black Sam Bellamy now 11lbs higher (125 compared with 114 in 2022). The 10-year-old made all of the running and had the race sewn up from the top of the home straight, eventually crossing the line with 5½ lengths to spare. Runner-up in a Listed event at this track on reappearance, she boasts course form figures of 2212 and should get her favoured soft ground.
The weights are headed by Lucinda Russell’s Haute Estime, who has yet to win over fences. This is just her third chase start in fairness, and having started the season on a mark of 132 – which actually looked more than fair judged on her novice hurdle form from last season – she is down to 128 and could well be a step ahead of the handicapper Runner-up at Kelso on her seasonal return, she then struggled behind The Real Whacker (returned to Cheltenham to win the Dipper and is prominent in the ante-post market for next month’s Brown Advisory) at Cheltenham.
The daughter of Walk In The Park again disappointed last time, on her return to hurdling, but if she can recapture the form she showed last season – when she won a Listed contest at Haydock and finished third to Gelino Bello in Aintree’s Sefton Novices’ Hurdle – she would be a threat to all. She certainly has the physique to do well over fences and it would not be a shock to see this unexposed six-year-old bounce back and defy top-weight.
Anthony Honeyball has only ever had nine runners at Carlisle, but two were successful and the Dorset handler sends Lilith on the long journey north. Her two chase victories came last spring, when successful in backto-back races at Newbury and Punchestown, winning a competitive mares’ handicap in Ireland. She hasn’t been in the same form so far this season and Honeyball has endured a rather quiet spell since of late, saddling just three winners from 58 runners during December and January.
The field is made up with another novice, Dr Richard Newland’s La Renommee, who only made her chasing debut 11 days ago. A winner over hurdles in France, she finished runner-up in a fillies’ juvenile handicap at Cheltenham’s April meeting and shaped with promise at Wetherby recently Dropped out, she was a little sticky over her first fence in public, but she jumped well in the main thereafter (bar an error leaving the back straight for the final time) and marked herself down as a sure-fire future winner Another trainer with a good strike-rate at the course, Newland’s runners are 6-20 (30%) at Carlisle and with conditions to suit, she can go well off a 2lbs higher mark. Her jumping was low and economical at Wetherby.

The one with the most compelling claims based on recent evidence is PATIENT OWNER, who made a positive start over fences upped to 3m last month at Uttoxeter where he found just one too good. A 2lb rise for that looks very fair indeed, particularly in light of the fact that the third and fourth from that race have both won since. Chris Cool could have a part to play if taking to fences at the first attempt, while Dawn Raider is capable of going well off this mark.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Carlisle Racecourse employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication.
