024 saw Tattersalls achieve levels of turnover and average price never witnessed before. After a slight downturn in 2023 from the previous year, this year’s recordbreaking turnover topped 420 million guineas, comfortably exceeding the previous record in 2022. Likewise, an average price of over 77,000 guineas was a big increase over the previous high. Particular highlights were the 4.8 million guineas fetched by You Got To Me at the December Mares Sale, and the Frankel yearling filly who was purchased as part of Amo Racing’s spending spree at the Book 1 Sale. At the conclusion of the 2024 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented: “Exactly eight weeks ago we reflected on a Tattersalls yearling sale of breathtaking proportions. Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale broke every conceivable record and the momentum from those extraordinary three days has shaped the entire Tattersalls sales season ever since. “Record after record has been broken in the past two months, culminating in a Tattersalls
December Mares Sale which has produced sustained international demand from start to finish and again reached unprecedented heights. It has been a fitting way to end an extraordinary year which at times has left even the most seasoned commentators a little stunned. “The December Mares Sale is an annual barometer for the international thoroughbred breeding industry and the records for turnover, average and median suggest that the appetite for the best European bloodstock is as strong as ever. There are few stages in the world that compare with the unique atmosphere of a packed Tattersalls Sale ring and yet again the elite Sceptre Sessions provided some compelling theatre and memorable highlights. The sale topping 4,800,000 guineas Classic winner You Got To Me is the highest priced filly or mare in the world this year, the outstanding French Group 1 winner Vertical Blue became the highest priced two year old ever sold at public auction in Europe when selling for 3,200,000 guineas and it is the first December Sale to have three

Gains of this magnitude have all contributed to a record Tattersalls annual turnover up more than 20% from last year’s total, but more importantly they have given a massive boost to the British and Irish breeding industries. While we cannot and should not pretend that all in the garden of British racing is rosy, we should nevertheless be proud that our sport and the wider British and Irish breeding industries continue to be held in the very highest esteem internationally and never has this been more apparent than during the 2024 Tattersalls sale season.

he extraordinary success of Book 1 was well and truly replicated in Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and far exceeded pre-sale expectations. Turnover and average both reached new heights by considerable margins and the 1,000,000 guineas sale- topping Kameko yearling is the highest price ever for a colt at Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale, but it was the clearance rate above 90% and the sheer volume of horses selling for 200,000 guineas or more that was truly incredible. The demand for quality yearlings from buyers from throughout the world resulted in 93 yearlings selling for 200,000 guineas or more; a number far in excess of any other European yearling sale except Book 1 and a huge increase on the previous Book 2 record of 58. The opening day of Book 2 saw thirteen lots realising 300,000 guineas or more and a top price of 875,000 guineas. The average and turnover were both up on last year’s opening session and the clearance rate was an impressive 90%. The top lot on the opening day was the Staffordstown consigned Sea The Stars colt out of the Listed placed Bighearted who realised 875,000 guineas to Anthony Stroud, bidding on behalf of Godolphin, after a protracted bidding duel with Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown. The February-born colt was bred by Michael Perlman and Sunderland Holding Inc. and is the first foal out of the Listed John Musker Stakes and Listed Prix Charles Laffitte second Bighearted. The daughter of Farhh is out of Bianca Nera, the Irish Champion two-year-old filly, and is a half-sister to the dam of Gr.1 winners Postponed and God Given. The top priced filly on Day 1 was Yeomanstown Stud’s St Mark’s Basilica daughter of the Listed winning Dark Angel mare Angelic Light who realised 600,000 guineas to the bid of Alex Elliott, on behalf of Amo Racing and Al Shaqab. The filly was bred by Yeomanstown Stud, who purchased Angelic Light at the December Mares Sale in 2019 for 165,000 guineas.
Godolphin also secured the Sea The Stars colt out of the Lope De Vega mare Fort Del Oro, who out of Dark Angel mare Angel Fairy for 475,000 was knocked down to MV Magnier. The filly is a guineas.
