Ayr Racecard - Thursday 29th January

Page 1

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for the final January jumps meeting of 2026.

Whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today

I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today and I wish all connections the very best of luck.

We have seven great races today including a Class 3 Novice Chase where Wendigo, who has already won a Grade 2 Novice Chase at Newbury and is seeking glory at the Cheltenham Festival, will be the clear market favourite. We have an ultra competitive National Hunt flat at the end of the card and in addition five other races that provide full fields to choose a winner from.

Our Jumps season of course culminates in the Coral Scottish Grand National weekend on 17/18 April it’s the biggest jumps meeting in Scotland and this year again will very much be a Premier fixture. Who can forget last year with the Red Devils parachute display team on the Saturday and indeed Willie Mullins essentially winning the trainers title as a result of prevailing in the Scottish National, will the Red Devils and Willie appear again this year!

I would also like to thank our racegoers for attending today and hope you enjoy your day Also please feel free to visit Western House Hotel after racing where Davie Galloway plays his live acoustic set from 4.30pm till 7.30pm.

The next meeting is on Tuesday 10 February and we look forward to welcoming you back then.

I wish you and a safe journey home and hope to see you back at Ayr soon.

10 Weight

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2ND 3RD 4TH TIME RACE

COOLKATIE was still in contention when falling at the final flight over 2m5f at Warwick and this could prove a suitable opportunity for some compensation. The six-year-old travelled with enough verve to suggest that she will cope with a return to 2m and edges the vote over Apples Jane. Gordon Elliott’s mare arrives on the back of a respectable fifth at Clonmel and isn’t taken lightly in this weaker affair. Klassy Pearl may fare best of the remainder.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - DAN SKELTON

Middlands-based Skelton has been pipped to the British trainers’ title in the past two seasons by Irish rival Willie Mullins but he’s setting a frenetic pace in a bid to win this season’s championship and, with the Cheltenham Festival now less than 6 weeks away the Skelton prize-money total is already in excess of £3million, with Mullins yet to really get going on just under £300,000 The trainer’s current biggest dangers are Olly Murphy and Ben Pauling, some £1.8million behind, but Mullins will have his usual strong teams to contest the huge money on offer at Cheltenham, Aintree and here at Ayr in March/April and anything Skelton can add from his 4 runners ridden by brother Harry here today will be a bonus

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - SEAN BOWEN

The current champion jockey has already had a 4-timer and a double from 3 visits to Ayr this season and the Welshman is back in Scotland before heading to Leopardstown this weekend for the 2-day Dublin Racing Festival. Top of the jockey’s list for the Irish meeting is his Welsh Grand National winning partner Haiti Couleurs in Saturday’s Irish Gold Cup but the rider has 5 rides on today’s 7-race card, with two each for his main trainers in Britain and Ireland, Olly Murphy and Gordon Elliott. Bowen rode his 182nd winner of the season at Plumpton on Monday as he charges towards his seasonal target of 200 and he’s well clear of second and third-placed former champions Harry Skelton and Brian Hughes who are both in action here today as well.

Diamond Geezer

Diamond Geezer hasn’t really kicked on as expected after his Perth triumph, for all that his defeats at Warwick and Lingfield have been respectable. Olly Murphy’s charge may come up short once more, with SARACEN BEAU fancied to be the beneficiary. The seven-year-old found only a subsequent winner too strong on his chase bow at Bangor and, back under the tutelage of Nicky Richards, reverting to timber holds no fears. Eloi Du Puy is also of interest in first-time cheekpieces. totewin: Saracen Beau

Probable S.P’s: 2-5 Wendigo (FR), 11-4 Maximilian (GER), 28-1 Donny Boy (IRE)

Grade 2 John Francome winner WENDIGO acquitted himself really well when third in the Kauto Star at Kempton on Boxing Day and he should take all the beating in these calmer waters. Jamie Snowden’s charge has enough class to concede 6lb to his rivals, with Maximilian rating as the biggest threat. The 10-year-old has posted two creditable efforts in defeat over fences and can keep the selection honest. Donny Boy might be out of his depth on his comeback.

A confident vote goes to BALLYFORT, who has really got the hang of things over fences this term. Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Katagat (GB), 4-1 The Skecher (FR), 6-1 Finisk Pride (IRE), 10-1 Blue du Neuf (FR), 12-1 Bay Runner (IRE), Myfriendcooper (IRE), 14-1 Allfor (IRE), El Gangster (IRE)

With many of these arriving from the pointing sphere, it looks best to heed the market signals. Dan Skelton’s The Skecher makes appeal, as do stable companions Allfor and Finisk Pride, but the previous experience of KATAGAT might be crucial. The Diamond Boy gelding made a pleasing introduction at Wetherby and with the aid of a tongue-tie this time, he could take the necessary step forward.
