THE HARRY ROSEBERY STAKES AND THE ARRAN SCOTTISH SPRINT
The Harry Rosebery Stakes is named after the 6th Earl of Rosebery, Harry Primrose, whose father, the 5th Early, was a Liberal Prime Minister in the late 19th century.
Harry died at the age of 92 in 1974 and the race which took his name was the old Ladykirk Stakes, a race which dated back to the first 2yo race ever run at Ayr on the old Belleisle course in 1825.
Tinas Pet won in 1980 for the former Mungo Jerry drummer, turned trainer, Geoff Huffer and the late 20th century also saw success for Derby winning trainer (Teenoso) Geoff Wragg’s Inchmurrin in 1987 and Jack Berry’s Palacegate Jack in 1993
Grand National winning jockey Graham Lee switched to the Flat to win twice on Quiet Reflection (2015) and Dave Dexter (2018) and while Tim Easterby is yet to add to his late father Peter’s 3 Ayr Gold Cups, the trainer won the Harry Rosebery in 2020 with subsequent Group 1 winner Winter Power
The Arran Scottish Sprint is a more recent introduction to the Gold Cup Festival, having first been run at Ayr in 2018, with the race being a Listed contest for fillies and mares of 3 years old and upwards over the same 5 furlongs as the Harry Rosebery.
5 older mares have been successful with the 3 year-old fillies having their days in the sun in 2019, 20 and 21 and trainer Karl Burke has already won the race 3 times in 2019, 2021 and 2025, that last win by Beautiful Diamond making her the only winner to have followed up a success in the Harry Rosebery which she won in 2023
