8 Form guide

9 Age

10 Weight

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

Although foiled in his follow-up bid, Lingfield scorer GATINEAU PARK lost little in defeat when conceding 7lb to a subsequent winner at Wincanton. The six-year-old should take all the beating if performing to a similar level and gets the vote over Tashkhan Brian Ellison’s inmate arrives on the back of a respectable third in a Grade 2 at Haydock and is likely to be involved. TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - BRIAN HUGHES

The 3-times champion jockey is no stranger to punters at Ayr with his 5-year record at the track currently the best in the weighing room and the jockey continuing to ride at the very top of his game. Only Sean Bowen and Harry Skelton have ridden more winners in Britain this season and the Northern Irishman is closing in on another century of winners with 95 winners on the board before 4 rides split between Haydock on Thursday and here at Ayr yesterday Hughes has struck up a new partnership this season with leading Scottish owner Jimmy Fyffe and that new connection has led to plenty of rides (and winners) for Scottish trainer Sandy Thomson who supplied the rider with winners at Newcastle and Catterick this week.

13% SUCCESS RATE AT AYR OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS 33 WINS FROM 262 RIDES

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCHLUCINDA RUSSELL AND MICHAEL SCUDAMORE

The new training combination has 8 runners on today’s card after 9 horses from the yard ran here yesterday and the stable has bounced back to form in recent weeks, just in time for the big spring festivals at Cheltenham, Aintree and here at Ayr. The joint-trainers’ current strike-rate here is only 9%, but this season hasn’t been one of the best for the Milnathort team and Russell has told of problems with the gallops which have now been rectified. The trainers had a double here last month after a treble at Kelso and next week’s Cheltenham team includes last year’s Ultima Chase winner Myretown looking to follow up in the same race and King Of Answers going for the marathon National Hunt Chase.

Successful in three of his five outings over fences, One Mill Harbour shaped better than the bare form over an extended 2m4f here last time out. The drop in distance looks ideal and he isn’t taken lightly, but NETYWELL is a shade more compelling. The top-weight returned to form with a fair fourth over C&D and a 2lb drop in the ratings may prove fruitful. Dance Thief could fare best of the rest.

Gamigin arrives on the back of much improved effort at Down Royal and could make his presence felt now back to something like his best, but TRIPLE CROWN TED makes most appeal. The progressive six-year-old landed a handicap in testing ground at Kelso in resolute fashion and his yard has won two of the three previous renewals. His new stable companion Litleangel Duseuil is a hurdles winner in France and could also shape well.

CLASSIC MAESTRO failed to complete in the Grade 1 Ascot Chase last month, but this is more his level. Jennie Candlish’s charge found only subsequent Grade 2 winner Jax Junior too good in a competitive handicap at Sandown in January and a repeat effort here should see him bang there at the finish. Ned Tanner won this last year off a 2lb higher mark and could bounce back, while Primoz is preferred of the rest.

Popton Point is unbeaten in two starts and is an exciting prospect, but she might find it tough to give weight away to JET OF STARS. The five-year-old won his sole point-to-point outing and changed hands for 230,000 pounds in March last year. The booking of Brian Hughes is noteworthy and he looks the one to side with. Dundee Law is from the family of Punjabi and must not be dismissed lightly.
