Highland Fashion is the pick of those with hurdling experience, but he could be vulnerable to some unexposed types in this field. One of those is UPON TWEED, who readily dispatched the exciting Conman John on his debut in a bumper at Newcastle in February. If taking to hurdling, Nicky Richards’ gelding could prove to be well above average this season. Stride On is another bumper winner who has to be given plenty of respect, while L’arme de Bonheur is also considered. totewin: Upon Tweed toteeachway: Stride On

EVERYDAY CHAMPAGNE may not have been suited by the drop to 2m4f when third at Perth. However, his previous second off this mark at the same venue over 3m suggests that he could play a leading role in a race of this nature. Judicial Review had plenty in hand when winning at Cartmel in August and James Moffatt’s gelding may prove to be the main threat, ahead of Cave Hill and Cowboy Cooper.

LAVIDA ADIVA progressed well last season and ended up winning a Listed event on her first start over 3m at Kelso in March. A second over C&D the following month suggests that there in more to come from Ruth Jefferson’s mare and she appears to be the safest pick in an open event. Esprit du Potier has been off the track for a long time, but he showed ability as a novice and should not be underestimated. Ginger Mail and Nab Wood are also noted.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - DEREK FOX
The Kinross-based Irishman remains the only currently licensed jockey to have won TWO Grand Nationals at Aintree and the rider continues to be number one at the stables of Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore who are now the joint license holders at Arlary House Stables near Milnathort. The new training partnership is well represented here today with 10 runners across our 7 races and Fox is booked to ride for the stable in every event after partnering last Saturday’s first Russell/Scudamore Cheltenham winner, Conman John, to an impressive success in a Class 2 novices’ hurdle. That was Fox’s 5th winner of the new campaign from just 27 rides so far and a further 15 of those mounts have finished second, third or fourth.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - NICKY RICHARDS
Richards sent a strong team to our recent gallops morning here at Ayr on the day after our Flat season ended on 9 October and it’s no surprise the Penrith handler is back for our opening card of the new jumping season with 4 runners looking to improve his already excellent figures here in Ayrshire. As well as his 14% strike-rate in the winners’ enclosure, Nicky’s runners hit the frame at a strike-rate of 49% here and he runs a highly promising likely favourite in our opening race at 12.48 called Upon Tweed. The Eddie Melville-owned son of Berkshire beat last weekend’s Cheltenham winner Conman John by more than 8 lengths on his bumper debut at Newcastle in February and is very highly-regarded at Greystoke.

PLAY SMARTER
Dan Skelton’s L’EAU DU SUD made great strides over fences as a novice last season, winning four times and also coming in fourth in the Arkle, and he is fancied to garner another victory dropped to handicap company for his seasonal return. Henry de Bromhead’s Special Cadeau is feared most on the back of a resurgent Roscommon second, although plenty of others also make appeal, notably General Medrano, Shakeyatailfeather and Sans Bruit. Last year’s winner Martator completes the shortlist.

GRAND VOYAGE was not at his best on his latest start in June, but he looks to have his optimal conditions on this occasion. Stuart Coltherd’s charge scored on soft ground over C&D in March and another strong bid is anticipated off the same mark. Isle of Sark has been in winning form over hurdles, having scored nicely at Sedgefield last month, and he reverts to fences with a shout, while Visual Impact is one to note on her chasing bow.

The one who appeals most is PROTEKTORAT, who was unsuccessful when bidding to defend his Ryanair Chase crown during the spring, but he followed that with a solid effort in defeat at Aintree and the 10-y-o is likely to benefit from this step back up in trip. Hewick warmed up for this assignment with a hurdles success at Thurles and he is next on the list ahead of Pic d’Orhy, who will be a danger to all if his stamina passes the test Last year’s winner The Real Whacker also merits respect

DANCE THIEF was making his return when beaten only a head in last year’s renewal of this race. A winner over fences back here subsequently, he could be hard to keep out of the frame off his current mark. Maple won on faster ground at Uttoxeter in May, but is versatile as regards the going and could have a say in the outcome, while the veteran Thereisnodoubt scored over C&D in March and cannot be ruled out with any confidence.

A solid case can also be made for the likes of Dance And Glance, Alexei and Fasol in this cracking handicap hurdle.

2ND
Surrey Belle won over hurdles at Hexham in June before following up on the level here in September and merits respect now chasing. That said, MY KIWI GIRL is preferred. Nick Alexander’s mare broke her maiden in fine style here in March, but the former point winner is bred to appreciate a switch to fences and is taken to launch a strong challenge. Walking On A Dream was pulled up in the Grade 2 Rossington Main when last seen but has much less on his plate on this occasion.

A chance can be taken on GUERNESEY, who was far from disgraced in a competitive series final at Musselburgh when last seen in March. It’s been a while in between drinks for Jackie Stephen’s gelding, but his handicap mark is reflective of that and having gone well fresh previously, he should not be discounted. Be The Difference kept on into third over 2m5f at Kelso most recently so must be of interest returned to further, while Didntgotwenty appeals most of the remainder. totewin: Guernesey
