WELCOME to Coral Scottish Grand National Saturday, Scotland’s £500,000 raceday featuring the finest day’s jump racing in Scotland.
Once again, we have an action-packed day in store and that’s before the racing commences. We have the Kilbarchan Pipe Band ably assisted by our flag bearers and back again by popular demand the Red Devils Parachute display team performing at 12.30pm.
Firstly, I should wish to thank all of our owners and trainers and their equine talent for participating in today’s racing.
I’d like to give a special mention to Coral whose name has become synonymous with the Scottish Grand National. Their sponsorship began in 2007 and since then thanks in no small way to their support, the race has grown in stature and is one of the outstanding highlights of the jumps season in Britain. In addition to the Coral Scottish Grand National, Coral also sponsor the Scottish Champion Hurdle which is always a fabulous race in its own right.
We are also thankful to our other sponsors on what is a superb afternoon’s racing.
Albert Bartlett and CPMS have sponsored for a number of years, and I’d like to specially mention Ronnie Bartlett and Charlie Shiells for their continued support.
Stagecoach have been brilliant transport partners and have really engaged with the event and what a thrill to welcome back long-term sponsors Jordan Electrics, thank you to Brian and the team. The Golf Inn Prestwick are tremendous backers of Ayr, and we are delighted that they are back once again with the National Hunt Flat Race which is sure to showcase future champions.
The ITV Racing team headed by Ed Chamberlin is here today providing outstanding coverage for those who can’t be here in person today but nothing quite beats being here to witness all of the action.
A huge thank you to the team at Ayr Racecourse who make this fantastic occasion so special due to their hard work and dedication.
Finally thank you all for being here today and I hope you have a successful and enjoyable day

TOP JOCKEYS
HARRY SKELTON
Harry’s trainer brother Dan will be crowned Champion Trainer for the first time at Sandown next weekend and the Skelton team have been regular visitors to Ayr over the past few years as they’ve sought a first trainers’ championship against overwhelming opposition from the now, finally, dethroned Willie Mullins. Dan and Harry come as a team with the younger brother taking very few outside rides, but while Harry has been Champion Jockey with his brother’s backing in 2020/21, this season has been the turn of older brother Dan to finally claim the number one spot in a title-race which Mullins finally conceded last weekend, despite Aintree Grand National success with I Am Maximus. Skelton, the jockey, has become renowned for his patient riding tactics on a variety of big-race winners and, with the help of stable-riders Tristan Durrell and Heidi Palin, the Skelton team warmed up for Ayr with 6 winners at Aintree last weekend, including 3 Grade Ones with Grey Dawning and Bossman Jack under Harry and Mirabad ridden by Durrell.
SEAN BOWEN
Sean is about to be crowned Champion Jockey for the second time at Sandown next weekend after adding last year’s title to the Conditional Jockey’s championship won in 2014/15 The Welshman is the older brother of fellow jockey James and the younger brother of trainer Mikey, with the dynasty headed by dad Peter who’s now retired after a successful career as a trainer The reigning champion started yesterday’s meeting here at Ayr with 230 winners for the season, some 110 clear of second top Harry Skelton on 120, with Ben Jones having a fantastic season back in third on 100 Bowen’s overall strike-rate of 24% matches Skelton’s exactly, but he’s 28% here at Ayr as his trips north have become increasingly regular and fruitful due to his associations with trainers Olly Murphy and Gordon Elliott. Sean and James will be on Gabby’s Cross and Heracles Westwood in today’s Coral Scottish Grand National and the champion elect will be keen to finish another fantastic season at Ayr with a winner or two.
TOP TRAINERS
LUCINDA RUSSELL & MICHAEL SCUDAMORE
Russell won a Scottish Grand National in her own right with Mighty Thunder 5 years ago, with that horse ridden by her now training partner Michael Scudamore’s jockey brother Tom. The yard starts the day with Traprain Law’s bid to improve on its 2024 second in the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase but the biggest runner of the day will be Scottish Grand National contender King of Answers. Derek Fox’s mount was a staying on second at the Cheltenham Festival last time out with the dual Kelso winner beaten by Holloway Queen in the National Hunt Chase and that run over three and three quarter miles points to the 7 year-old being well suited by today’s extra 2 furlongs. The yard was out of luck with 4 runners at Aintree last weekend but there were 3 second places at Hexham on Monday and, while Russell’s training partnership with Scudamore is in its very early stages, it’s also worth pointing out that Lucinda’s personal 5-year record at Ayr is 56 wins from 312 runners, an impressive strikerate of 18%.
PAUL NICHOLLS
Nicholls’ 3 winners in this great race leave him one short of the Ayr record of 4 Scottish Grand National wins held by the legendary Borders trainer Ken Oliver, with the Ditcheat handler saddling the winner 3 times thanks to Belmont King (1997) and Vincente (2016 and 2017). Nicholls has 2 runners in today’s race with Quebecois (Harry Cobden) and Isaac des Obeaux (Sam TwistonDavies) and a fourth success would level the scores with Oliver who won the race with The Spaniard (1970), Young Ash Leaf (1971), Fighting Fit (1979) and Cockle Strand (1982). Just to complicate matters a little, Oliver also won the race as a trainer when it was run at Bogside in Irvine, with Pappageno’s Cottage winning there in 1963, after the former amateur rider had also ridden the winner there as a jockey on Sanvina in 1950 A fourth winner for Nicholls would make him the joint-record holder at Ayr though and his departing jockey Harry Cobden (off to ride for JP McManus) won the race last year on the Willie Mullins’ trained Captain Cody
THANK YOU SPONSORS

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

This is a two mile and half a furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

CHAMPION HURDLE FACTS
FIRST RUN
The Scottish Champion Hurdle was first run in 1966 which was the same year that the Scottish Grand National moved to Ayr after Bogside Racecourse closed. Blue Venom, ridden by Mr P Adams won the race.
FAMOUS HORSES
Famous horses to have won the race include legends such as Night Nurse (1976), Sea Pigeon (1977, 1978) and Alderbrook in 1996, the year after he won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Bird’s Nest also won this race in 1979 and 1981.
BIG RACE JOCKEYS
Andy Turnell, Peter Scudamore, Richard Dunwoody and Richard Johnson have all ridden three Scottish Champion Hurdle winners.
WINNINGMOST TRAINER
Martin Pipe won the race a total of four times with Sayaparee (1990), Granville Again (1992), Blowing Wind (1998) and Copeland (2004)
SECOND IRISH WINNER
Anna Bunina became only the second Irish trained horse to win the Scottish Champion Hurdle when she won in 2022. The only other Irish based winner was Captain Christy in 1973. Trained by Pat Taaffe he went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following year.
CORAL SPONSORSHIP
Coral first sponsored this race in 2021 and we are delighted they now support the two principal races on today’s card
THIRD RACE 2.20
THE CORAL SCOTTISH CHAMPION HURDLE
(A LIMITED HANDICAP) (CLASS 1) (GRADE 2) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards and due to the quality of the race it has been awarded Grade 2 status. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap, so higher rated horses will have to shoulder more weight than their lower rated rivals.

TODAY’S TIPS
Tellherthename has been quite highly tried and can have a big say if a first-time hood draws some improvement. However CAPTAIN HUGO has proven to be tough to overhaul when he gets into a battle and, having readily atoned for a fall on his penultimate start with a game success at Kelso most recently, this progressive six-year-old has enough scope to deal with stepping up in class. Conversely, Tutti Quanti steps down a grade after finding the Champion Hurdle out of his reach last month. This is more attainable and he should be a key player back on softer ground.

FOURTH RACE 2.55
THE JORDAN ELECTRICS LTD SEAFIELD TROPHY
MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a three mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for fillies and mares aged four-years and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

FIRST RUN
The Scottish Grand National was first run as the West of Scotland Grand National at a course near Houston, Renfrewshire from 1858 until 1866.
BOGSIDE
The race moved to Bogside Racecourse in Irvine, approximately 10 miles from Ayr, in 1867. In 1966 the first running of the race at Ayr took place with African Patrol ridden by John Leech winning.
FIRST WINNER
First winner was Tahe Elk owned by the Duke of Hamilton and ridden by John Page who also rode the winner of the Grand National that year (Cortolvin).
FIRST TELEVISED
NO ENGLISH TRAINED WINNER SINCE 2019
Irish trainer Willie Mullins has won the last 2 Scottish Grand Nationals with Welsh handler Christian Williams winning the 2 before that and Lucinda Russell scoring for Scotland in 2021. Due to Covid in 2020, the last English trainer to win was Nicky Richards with Takingrisks in 2019.
HELLO AYR
It is over 50 years since the first running of the Scottish Grand National at Ayr following the closure of Bogside Racecourse near Irvine. The race was won by African Patrol, ridden by Johnny Leech and trained by Bobby Fairbair.
The race was first televised in 1953 and again in 1954 both by the BBC. Then there was no live coverage until ITV took over in 1969 and it remained on that channel until 1986 when Channel 4 took over In 2017 the coverage returned to the flagship ITV and once again today the team headed by Ed Chamberlin broadcast from the track.
TREBLE UP?
Since the race moved to Ayr in 1966 only one jockey has won the race three times – Mark Dwyer on Androma in 1984 and 1985 and Moorcroft Boy 1995 Sam Twiston-Davies is the only currently licensed jockey to have won the race twice, on Vincente in 2016 and 2017.
SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL FACTS
MOST RIDES
Recently retired Richard Johnson rode in this race 19 times which is more than any other jockey. His sole success came in 2011 on board Beshabar for trainer Tin Vaughan.
BETTER LUCK OF THE IRISH
2024 winner
Macdermott was the first Irish trained winner of the race since Huntsman won at Bogside in 1869.
WINNING DISTANCE
2018’s shortest winning distance of a nose was matched in 2024 when Macdermott beat Surrey Quest by the same minimum official winning distance.
WINNING TRAINERS
Ken Oliver (4) holds the record for training the most Scottish Grand National winners at Ayr with The Spaniard (1970), Young Ash Leaf (1971), Fighting Fit (1979) and Cockle Strand (1982).
CORAL SPONSORSHIP
Coral took over sponsorship of the race in 2007, the year Hot Weld, trained by Ferdy Murphy and ridden by PJ McDonald won the race. Their commitment to the race has seen it grow to become the fourth biggest race in terms of betting turnover in Britain.

MACDERMOTT
OWNER: GALLAGHER BLOODSTOCK LIMITED
TRAINER: W P MULLINS
JOCKEY: DANNY MULLINS
Macdermott claimed victory in thrilling fashion in last year’s renewal. The Willie Mullins-trained gelding looked set to stretch clear of his rivals after a good jump four from home took him into the lead. However, after navigating the last, he was challenged by Surrey Quest A gutsy effort in the closing stages saw him clinch the win by a nose from his rival.
2023
KITTY’S LIGHT
OWNER: R J BEDFORD & ALL STARS SPORTS RACING
TRAINER: CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS
JOCKEY: JACK TUDOR
After finishing second 12 months prior, Kitty’s Light went one better to land the prize, to give Christian Williams back-to-back winners in the race. He had been prone to the odd error in previous performances but put that all behind him with an excellent round of jumping. The market had been confident in his chances before hand and he bolted up by three lengths.
CAPTAIN CODY
OWNER: VINCENT CALDWELL & ANGELA SHAMOON & MRS A SHAMOON IBGI
TRAINER: W P MULLINS
JOCKEY: HARRY COBDEN
Willie Mullins secured back-to-back wins in this race thanks to the exploits of Captain Cody. With Harry Cobden aboard, the gelding made steady progress in the early stages before being shaken up after successfully navigating the last fence. His response was spectacular as he powered past his rival Klarc Kent just before the finish line.
2022
WIN MY WINGS
OWNER: SUE HOWELL
TRAINER: CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS
JOCKEY: MR ROB JAMES
This was a class performance from the co-favourite of Scotland’s richest jumps race who travelled well throughout the four mile marathon, making steady headway from the 16th before taking the lead four from home. She went clear after the third last, putting seven lengths between herself and stablemate Kitty’s Light.
2021
MIGHTY THUNDER
OWNER: ALLSON SPARKLE LTD
TRAINER: LUCINDA RUSSELL
JOCKEY: TOM SCUDAMORE
Patience was the name of the game for jockey Tom Scudamore as he settled Mighty Thunder put the back and only caught the eye turning into the home straight. He was second crossing the last but got up in the last 100 yards to deny Dingo Dollar.

Jockey: Harry Cobden
Trainer: W P Mullins

TODAY’S TIPS Last month’s Cheltenham winner Ask Brewster and the runner-up Road To Home lock horns once again with the former fancied to confirm superiority Isaac des Obeaux landed the Midlands National over 4m2f at Uttoxeter in fine style and is preferred to stablemate Quebecois, but MONTREGARD takes the eye. He has to prove he stays this far, but that shouldn’t be an issue on the evidence of his latest victory over 3m at Ascot and Tom Lacey’s progressive chaser looks the type to make a bold bid for this valuable prize raised only 4lb.

West Hill Verde brings solid form to the table, not least his latest Kelso third in Grade 2 company, and must be taken seriously, but APACHE TRIBE might have his measure. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

TODAY’S TIPS Irish point-to-point winner KEOPS DES BORDES is a fascinating contender on his return from 473 days off the track. On his stable/Rules debut at Warwick in December 2024, the six-year-old was sent off favourite and finished a fine second to a certain No Drama This End, who ended up finishing ninth in the Champion Bumper that season and has won a Grade 1 over hurdles this term. He’ll likely be fit enough to do himself justice given his connections and can get the better of Brady Hartsfield and Skerry Hill
