Having been held up in his first two chasing attempts, ORKNEY BLUE was the beneficiary of a more positive ride at Carlisle last time. Nick Alexander’s charge is 6lb higher now but remains open to further improvement and he receives a confident vote. Blakey Boy has been knocking on the door of late and is the main threat, ahead of Rob Roy Macgregor. totewin: Orkney Blue

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - BRIAN HUGHES
The 3-times champion jockey is no stranger to punters at Ayr with his 5-year record at the track currently the best in the weighing room and the jockey riding at the absolute top of his game. Only today’s rival Sean Bowen and Harry Skelton have ridden more winners in Britain this season and the Northern Irishman is closing in on yet another century with an overall strike-rate of around 18%. Hughes has struck up a new partnership this season with leading Scottish owner Jimmy Fyffe who has horses at various yards in Britain and Ireland and the jockey continued his love affair with Sedgefield last week, when the second leg of a treble on the day brought up his 250th winner at the County Durham venue. Hughes just has the one booked ride today on Jericoacoara at 4.00 but trainers will know he’s available should any other horse suddenly find itself without a jockey 13%

Each of these arrive with some kind of chance, but it is STRIDE ON that gets the nod. The Lucinda Russell & Michael Scudamore inmate chased home a 132-rated rival here in November and had excuses when a beaten favourite at Carlisle the following month. If the break has freshened him up, he ought to go close. Irish Champ and Zamek head the list of dangers.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - OLLY MURPHY
Murphy is building up a strong team for next month’s Cheltenham Festival but the yard had 8 runners across 4 different tracks over the course of Saturday and Sunday and he sends 6 horses here to Ayr today with 4 of them due to be ridden by champion jockey Sean Bowen. Murphy’s record here is respectable enough with 12 winners over the past 5 seasons but Bowen has had 24 winners here in that time period and the champion’s record here this season is 11 winners from just 23 rides, an astonishing strike-rate of 48%. Both men are looking for their first Cheltenham Festival winners next month with Bowen on Gold Cup contender Haiti Couleurs and Murphy has nominated current 12/1 chance Indeevar Bleu as his best chance of a winner on day two of the meeting, Wednesday, in the Coral Cup.

Tommy Combats recorded a comfortable success over an extended 2m here last month and is respected given that, but JACCOURS is preferred. Connections waste no time in sending the Gris De Gris gelding over a fence having won his maiden hurdle at Ffos Las recently and that could unlock even greater progress. Veteran Dubai Days has struggled this term, but a drop in class should aid his cause.

The Irish challenger GREEN HOPE failed to complete over 2m4f on hurdles debut but showed his true colours at Down Royal last month. Dropped in trip, the five-year-old found plenty in the closing stages to open his account over timber and further improvement looks on the cards. THE NAVIGATOR: Following its run on 8/11/2025 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.
Probable S.P’s: 7-2 Diamond Geezer (IRE), 4-1 Lights Go Down (GB), 8-1 The Jeweller’s Pet (IRE), 10-1 Nellie Bluesky (GB), 12-1 Eloi du Puy (FR), Mountain Molly (IRE), 16-1 Jericoacoara (FR), Balking (FR), El Jefe (IRE), 22-1 The Navigator (GB), 33-1 Go Frankie (IRE) 2ND 3RD 4TH TIME
THE JEWELLER’S PET won this off a similar mark last year and signalled a return to form back over C&D last time. Not beaten far in third on that occasion, a bold bid is anticipated from Ian Duncan’s charge with the underfoot conditions also in his favour. The Navigator landed a double on faster going at Kelso last autumn, but Diamond Geezer may prove a bigger threat fresh from a convincing success under Sean Bowen here last time.

Kilaro won a bumper at Musselburgh prior to disappointing at Newcastle last time and a hood is applied for this. Kingsman Mail failed to build on his promising second here when well beaten on his return to the track, so a chance is taken on JARDIN DE TUNIS Related to jumps winners in France, the Irish point-to-point winner debuts for the Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore’s yard and may prove good enough on his Rules debut.
