Ayr Racecard - Friday 17th April

Page 1

Welcome to Ladies Day, the opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival - Scotland’s biggest and richest jumps fixture.

Over the next two days we’ll stage some of the finest National Hunt racing the sport has to offer featuring top horses, trainers and jockeys with all of the major players here at Ayr. I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today and I wish all connections the very best of luck.

This afternoon’s feature race is the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase and today’s contest marks the 33rd sponsorship at this Festival by the Hillhouse Group. Richard Vernon and his family have been steadfast in their support of this race, and I’d like to thank them for their generous and continuing support.

I’d also like to thank all our other sponsors this afternoon. Coral came on board as principal sponsors of the Scottish Grand National in 2007 and their unstinting commitment to this Festival ever since has seen it grow into one of the most important fixtures of the jumps racing calendar

Slater Menswear sponsor our first race and are also providing a fantastic £1200 voucher as part of the Style Awards which form such an integral part of the day

Irish Thoroughbred Marketing have also been loyal supporters of Ayr Racecourse for a number of years through their sponsorship of our winning connections, and we are delighted that they have are now sponsors of the second race on the card.

Thistle Cabs, one of Ayrshire’s leading taxi companies, sponsor the Thistle Cabs Group Handicap Hurdle and are another company who are regular supporters of the Racecourse.

A big welcome to Jardine Utilities who are sponsoring our “Hands and Heels” Handicap Hurdle for Conditional Jockeys and Amateur Riders. We welcome your support and hope you have a great experience with all of your staff

Abbott Risk is an award-winning Safety Engineering and Risk Management company operating globally and we are delighted to have them sponsoring our Maiden Hurdle.

Our Style Awards take place in the Champagne Lawns during the afternoon and there are terrific prizes in four categories – Most Stylish Lady, Stylish Gent, Stylish Hat/Headpiece and Most Stylish Couple.

We are super excited to have River Island on board as main sponsors of the Style Awards, and they have contributed some fantastic prizes including a voucher for £1000 for most stylish lady and £500 for the lucky gent. We also have terrific additional prizes for each category, many thanks to all of our sponsors.

In addition, we also have the fantastic Ellie Sax performing in the Ayrshire Suite after racing and Paul Scully will be entertaining in Western House post racing.

Finally, I should wish to thank the Ayr Racecourse team who have worked tirelessly to ensure this day is a great success.

To everyone, enjoy your day!

8 Form guide

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

THE SLATER MENSWEAR HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two miles and half a furlong novices’ limited handicap steeple chase is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards who are rated between 0-125 and have not won more than two steeple chases.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - HARRY COBDEN

The stats show that the former champion jockey hasn’t been a regular visitor to Ayr outside of this biggest 2-day meeting of the season but his strike-rate is a more than healthy 23% and he famously won last year’s Coral Scottish Grand National on the Willie Mullins trained Captain Cody. The now 27 year-old was champion Conditional Jockey in 2015/16 before becoming overall Champion in 2023/24 and he’ll continue as first jockey to trainer Paul Nicholls until the end of this month, before taking over from Mark Walsh as retained rider for owner JP McManus in Ireland & Great Britain on May 1. Cobden’s Grade One Brown Advisory Chase win on Kitzbuhel at Cheltenham last month took his Festival tally to 7 on top of Kempton King George VI Chase wins on Clan Des Obeaux (2018) and Bravemansgame (2022). We’re delighted to welcome Harry to Ayr this weekend before his visits will be restricted to days involving runners in the green and gold hoops (white cap) which he’s about to wear with increasing regularity on both sides of the Irish Sea.

23% SUCCESS RATE AT AYR OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS 7 WINS FROM 30 RIDES

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - DAN SKELTON

Dan’s fantastic season so far will see him crowned Champion Trainer for the very first time at Sandown next weekend and the Skelton team have been regular visitors to Ayr over the past few years as they’ve sought a first championship against overwhelming opposition from the now finally, dethroned Willie Mullins. Trainer Dan and jockey brother Harry come as a team, but while Harry has been Champion Jockey with his brother’s backing in 2020/21, this season has been the turn of older brother Dan to finally claim the number one spot in a title-race which Mullins finally conceded last weekend despite Aintree Grand National success with I Am Maximus. Skelton’s big-race successes this season have been the icing on the cake of a title race which saw him crash through the £4 million winnings barrier and Britain’s new Number One warmed up for Ayr with 6 winners at Aintree last weekend, including 3 Grade Ones with Grey Dawning, Mirabad and Bossman Jack.

Point-to-point winner Dropematthestation has his first start following wind surgery and he could go well if that brings improvement, but he will need to step up to get the better of LIRION Olly Murphy’s gelding was only beaten a short head here in a bumper in February and this looks to be a suitable opportunity on his hurdling debut. Bohemond Antioch was unlucky when unseating last time and may gain some compensation.

FOURTH RACE 3.30

THE HILLHOUSE QUARRY HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two mile, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

2024 WINNER RISKINTHEGROUND (IRE)

TODAY’S TIPS

Hoe Joly Smoke has his first start after wind surgery and may well feature for Dan Skelton’s yard. Donnacha landed a competitive contest at Cheltenham in January and could have a say in the outcome, but TWINJETS makes most appeal. Paul Nicholls’ top weight bounced back with a creditable second at Newbury last month and, given the third has subsequently boosted that form, the son of Jet Away looks set to make another bold bid.

THE CORAL HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two mile, five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 150 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 145.

THE GET HOME SAFE WITH THISTLE CABS HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This three mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 130 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

TODAY’S TIPS ALENTEJO took a big step forward on his second outing for Nicky Henderson, chasing home the smart A Pai De Nom at Newbury, an effort that can be marked up as he reportedly struck into his left-fore leg and lost his left-fore shoe. Off the same mark and entitled to improve further, he might be worth chancing in a competitive handicap. Woodland Park has had a frustrating but consistent season to date. Placed in all four starts since returning in November he is likely to be in the shake-up once again, while Society Soldier and Kent de Thaix are others to keep an eye on.
