Welcome to Royal Ascot Trials Day, our first Flat fixture of 2026
This year, we are thrilled to offer record prize money of £16.7 million across our 17 Flat racing fixtures, as well as more than £4 million at the industry-owned QIPCO British Champions Day. Prize money increases across the programme include the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes becoming Britain’s joint-richest ever race, worth £2 million, while at Royal Ascot, 26 of the 35 races will be run for more than they were in 2025 Throughout the season all races on the Flat will be worth at least £25,000
As a result, today’s card has £365,650 on offer and it is always a high-quality and informative day. Last year, Docklands finished second in the Paradise Stakes before opening the Royal Meeting with a bang by winning the Queen Anne Stakes Also twelve months ago, My Cloud took the closing apprentice handicap before following up with victory in the Royal Hunt Cup, while Wise Approach won the Two-Year-Old Trial then finished second in the Norfolk Stakes and went on to win the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes ahead of Brussels and Coppull.
That trio clash again today in what looks a particularly strong renewal of the Group 3 Commonwealth Cup Trial. We are delighted that ITV will be showing that race and the Group 3 Longines Sagaro Stakes, a key Gold Cup trial, alongside their coverage of Newmarket
We would like to thank Longines and Darley for their continued generous sponsorship today, whilst we are also very pleased to welcome our friends and colleagues from Naas Racecourse who sponsor a race this afternoon in the run up to their own successful Royal Ascot Trials Day on Sunday 17th May.
Entries for the Group 1 races at Royal Ascot were released earlier this week and it is exciting to see so much global interest in the Royal Meeting with entries from eight countries including the USA, Australia, Japan, Denmark and Czechia.
We hope you have a fantastic day and look forward to welcoming you back to Ascot soon. Our next meeting is the Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% May Racing Weekend on 8th and 9th May.
Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt.
His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Ascot Shop Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial EBF Conditions Stakes
This race is a five furlong conditions stakes for two-year-olds The runners in this type of race are subject to specific conditions that often revolve around age or sex, or confine the race to horses that have yet to win above a particular level. In this instance, the race is restricted to two-year-olds which are EBF eligible.
PAGES 24-26
2nd Race 2.35pm
The Longines Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) (A Gold Cup Trial)
One of the feature races of the day is this two mile Group 3 race for four-year-olds and upwards, a race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.
PAGES 28-30
3rd Race 3.10pm
The Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes (Group 3)
The second of our feature races, this six furlong race for three-year-olds is a Group 3 contest and will attract some of the speediest juveniles around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 3 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 3lb and fillies 9st, although any runner which has already won a Group 1 or 2 race will be issued with a 4lb penalty.
PAGES 34-36
4th Race 3.45pm
The Memberships At Ascot Paradise Stakes (Listed Race) (A Queen Anne Stakes Trial)
This one mile contest for four-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 5lb for colts and geldings and 9st for fillies
before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 2 win.
PAGES 42-45
5th Race 4.20pm
The Naas Racecourse Handicap Stakes
This is a five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80
PAGES 50-52
6th Race 4.55pm
The Darley British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes
The penultimate race on the card is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
PAGES 56-58
7th Race 5.30pm
The Ascot Racecourse Supports Debra Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap Stakes
Our finale is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Conversely, this 6-y-o continues to progress and if he is to beat Sweet William at any point this season, it’s likely that it will be now given his fitness edge and with Ryan Moore in the hot-seat. Sweet William sets the standard and will prove a tough nut to crack if raring to go, while Tabletalk is third choice ahead of Caballo de Mar.

Today, we are pleased to announce the 2025/6 Jumps season winners of our Bet with Ascot (BWA) donation box scheme. This initiative enables customers to deposit their losing betting slips into one of our charity boxes, supporting our nominated equine or local charity in return for the chance of winning a hospitality prize.
Local charity, Alma Beacon, were the winners and will be presented with a cheque for £1,000 today by members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Racing & Bloodstock who are visiting the racecourse today to learn more about the Ascot Racecourse Supports charity and community programme. Equine charity, Strength & Learning Through Horses, will receive a £500 donation as the worthy runner-up.
The nominated charities for our 2026 Flat season are equine charity Windsor Horse Rangers and local charity, DEBRA.
Windsor Horse Rangers is a volunteer led charity which was set up in 1972 with the mission to give young people the hands-on skills to care for, handle, ride and connect with horses in a supportive, nurturing and fun environment.

They have 24 horses and ponies who are cared for by 180 children aged 8-18 who spend 3-7 hours each Saturday or Sunday at their farm. The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses
This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

DEBRA UK are the patient support organisation for anyone living with any form of epidermolysis bullosa (EB).
EB is a group of incredibly painful genetic skin blistering conditions that make the skin so fragile that even the slightest knock or friction can cause it to blister and tear EB is also commonly known as ‘butterfly skin’ because it makes the skin as fragile as a butterfly’s wings
There are currently only limited treatments for EB and no cures, but DEBRA are working to change this
DEBRA provide a range of community care and support services that aim to improve quality of life for everyone affected by EB today. This includes practical and emotional support at every stage of life, advocating on behalf of members to ensure they get the support they need, providing support grants that help make life with EB that bit easier, and offering members discounted holiday breaks for much needed respite.
As well as making a difference today, DEBRA are equally focused on creating a better tomorrow Since being established in 1978, DEBRA have invested over £24m in EB research and established much of what is now known about the condition. The key focus for EB research now is investing in clinical trials to test existing, licenced drugs which DEBRA believes could transform quality of life for people living with EB; helping their wounds heal more quickly and improving symptoms such as pain and itch.
We are delighted to welcome supporters of the charity today and in recognition of their work, we have named our 5.30pm race “The Ascot Racecourse Supports DEBRA Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap Stakes.”
Your support is so important to DEBRA and will help make a real difference to the lives of thousands of children and adults in the UK affected by EB.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.
In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
