Welcome to the Betfair Ascot Chase Raceday.
Today’s feature race, the Betfair Ascot Chase, is the last Grade 1 in Britain before the Cheltenham Festival and it looks like a stellar line up Pic D’Orhy bids to become the first ever three-time winner of the race for Paul Nicholls, Harry Cobden and the de la Hey family but he faces a tough test with Jonbon, winner of the BetMGM Clarence House Chase, seeking a phenomenal 12th top-level success
We give our thanks to Betfair for their continued support of this contest, with their sponsorship entering its 18th year The card as a whole is worth £460,000 and Betfair also sponsor five other races including the Betfair Swinley Handicap Chase which features the 2024 victor, Threeunderthrufive. The Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase is run in support of the Injured Jockeys Fund. Our IJF Ambassadors Programme raised a total of £21,200 for the charity last year and we will be presenting a cheque for that value to charity trustee and former jockey Tom Scudamore this afternoon.
Last month we were delighted to be recognised at the 2025 Longines World Racing Awards, with the QIPCO Champion Stakes named the joint-best Flat race in the world. Eight of the top 21 Flat horses in the global rankings ran at Ascot last year, including the world’s best, Calandagan, while three of the top nine races were held on our turf It was fantastic to witness so many equine superstars across the Flat season and we hope to see many more this year
Our next raceday, the last Jumps meeting of the season at Ascot, is the ever-popular Spring Family Raceday on Sunday 29th March, with free themed entertainment throughout the day. We hope to welcome you and your families back to Ascot then.
Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt.
His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Betfair Novices’ Hurdle Race
This afternoon’s opening race is for novices These tend to be younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular contest is a novice hurdle for horses aged five and upwards, run over two miles and about three furlongs
PAGES 22-23
2nd Race 1.50pm
The Injured Jockeys Fund Ambassadors Programme Reynoldstown Novices’ Steeple Chase (Grade 2)
Our first of two graded races, this Grade 2 is a high-class contest only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch horses lining up and possibly some Cheltenham Festival contenders. Initially the weights in this three mile steeple chase for novices aged five and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 3lb for winners of a Class 2 weight-for-age or Class 1 handicap chase to 5lb for victory in a Class 1 weight-for-age chase.
PAGES 26-28
3rd Race 2.25pm
The Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle Race
The third race is a handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards which is run over two miles and about three furlongs In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
PAGES 30-32
4th Race 3.00pm
The Betfair Swinley Handicap Steeple Chase (Premier Handicap)
This is a three miles steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. The majority of
handicaps are designed for horses from a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it, which allows horses with a higher rating to take part The higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races
PAGES 40-41
5th Race 3.35pm
The Betfair Ascot Steeple Chase (Grade 1)
The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and five furlongs Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football - quite simply there is no higher level, so these races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race so the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex.
PAGES 44-47
6th Race 4.10pm
The Betfair Handicap Hurdle Race (Challenger Stayers Hurdle Series Qualifier)
Today’s penultimate race is a handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards rated from 0-125 and is run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms, a horse rated 125 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 120.
PAGES 48-50
7th Race 4.45pm
The Betfair Mares’ Open National Hunt Flat Race
Our finale is a National Hunt Flat Race - or ‘bumper’, as they are more commonly referred to - this is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat, over hurdles or in steeple chases (except for point-topoints), they are not eligible to enter. This particular contest is restricted to fillies and mares aged four to six

20. Weight (stones/pounds)
21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

On 29th January 2026, students from seven local schools attended the final of the Ascot Racecourse Supports Community Challenge at Ascot Racecourse. Now in its second year, the Challenge aims to engage students in volunteering and giving back to their communities

Each school received a £50 seed fund and selected a team of six students to partner with a local charity, researching, developing and delivering a project designed to make a meaningful impact The students’ presentations were exceptional, with their passion leaving a strong impression on the judging panel: Sean Taylor, High Sheriff of the Royal County of Berkshire; Gerry LeJeune, Chief Executive of Berkshire Community Foundation; and Jack Rankin MP for Windsor
While judges deliberated, students heard directly from the charities involved, gaining further insight into the vital work they do across the community. Herschel Grammar School won overall for their work with Slough Homeless our Concern (SHOC), while Churchmead School received a new High Sheriff’s Award for their partnership with Slough Crossroads Both charities were awarded £1,000, with Berkshire Community Foundation also providing £250 to each of the remaining five charities
To date, more than £10,500 has been raised, with fundraising still ongoing. Today, students from Herschel Grammar School are running a stall (located on the Grandstand Concourse) in support of SHOC, who is also our official bucket collector Please say hello and donate if you are able.
“The project had a hugely positive impact on those involved. Throughout the challenge, students went above and beyond, working collaboratively, problem-solving effectively, communicating with confidence, and carrying out a wide range of fundraising activities. It provided them with valuable opportunities to develop leadership, confidence, and real-world skills while making a meaningful contribution to a cause they genuinely cared about

“The experience not only raised important funds for our chosen charity, SHOC, but also helped students gain a deeper understanding of the value of community involvement and social responsibility. We are extremely grateful to Ascot Racecourse, and everyone involved for creating such a rewarding and memorable experience for our students.”

We are delighted to report that our Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) Ambassadors Programme, which sees former jockeys provide our Fine Dining guests with an informative talk and tour on racedays, raised a total of £21,200 in 2025 via on the day donations from guests
This programme was initiated in 2017 and to date has raised over £188,000 for the charity.
The Injured Jockeys Fund provides support to jockeys past and present who are injured, unable to ride or in need of help Founded in 1964, the charity has helped in excess of 2,000 jockeys and their families and has paid out over £23 million in grants and charitable expenditure of £80 million.
Money raised has specifically contributed towards equipping the IJF’s three rehabilitation and fitness centres, Oaksey House, Peter O’Sullevan House and Jack Berry House, together with the smaller ‘hubs’ at Taunton and Galashiels Hydrotherapy is an important treatment method at all three rehabilitation centres, and this ambassador programme has
helped towards the continuation of this specialist and highly effective physiotherapy treatment.
“We are very grateful to Ascot and the racing public for their kind generosity via this fantastic initiative; we rely totally upon charitable income and funds raised via this ambassador programme have been a huge help in reaching the £6M required to fund the Charity each year.” Lisa Hancock, CEO, Injured Jockeys Fund.
In recognition of this hugely successful programme, we have donated race naming rights for our 1.50pm race, “The Injured Jockeys Fund Ambassadors Programme Reynoldstown Novices’ Steeple Chase”.

TIMEFORM SUMMARY
DEAFENING SILENCE bumped into a thrown-in rival on return and shaped really well when third in the Welsh National last time, arguably just paying the price late for pressing on with the Gold Cup-bound Haiti Couleurs. He can gain a deserved first win of the season here, though Myretown remains potentially very well treated if his jumping holds up trying this marathon trip for the first time. Holokea is steadily progressive and can make his presence felt in this higher grade.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly. And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants
For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have seen the risk of falling reduce by 11 per cent while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries
At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

Low-mileage 7-y-o CRAZIERTHANDAISY would have finished closer to Top Guy at Newbury barring a late error and on 3lb better terms, she’s narrowly preferred to Dan Skelton’s unexposed stayer. Heart Over Head steps into a very competitive handicap for his hat-trick bid but merits plenty of respect given his recent improvement, while Sea Invasion could be interesting back over hurdles providing the ground isn’t too testing.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.
In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £315,810 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 1st January to 27th March 2026.
