Ascot Racecard - Friday 3rd October

W E L C O M E

Welcome to the first day of the BetMGM Autumn Racing Weekend, featuring the 18th Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA.

Today’s feature race is the BetMGM Noel Murless Stakes, a Listed event worth £100,000 for three-year-olds over one mile and six furlongs. It has launched the careers of the likes of Scope and Big Orange, the latter going on to win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot after winning this contest.

We extend our grateful thanks to BetMGM for their support of that race as well as two others on the card, and of course their sponsorship of the weekend as a whole. We would also like to extend our gratitude to today’s other race sponsors, Thames Materials, Colliers and the Victoria Racing Club. As well as the action on the track, there are over 160 beers, ciders and perries to quench your thirst at the Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA. You will be able to find the Festival at the east end of the Grandstand.

Today in the Grandstand concourse, ABC To Read will be showcasing its work as a charity providing volunteer reading mentors in schools Meanwhile Racing to School is hosting students from the Berkshire College of Agriculture who are taking part in the charity’s Riders’ Programme. This encourages students to consider racing and thoroughbred breeding as a possible career route. Finally, today’s bucket collection is on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Dementia Support charity, based just down the road in Maidenhead.

We hope to welcome you back tomorrow for the second day of the BetMGM Autumn Racing Weekend, as well as for QIPCO British Champions Day on Saturday 18th October, which promises to be a thrilling conclusion of the British Flat season.

Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt.

His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

RACING PAGES

Your guide to all of today’s races

The Thames Materials Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Stakes

This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 This specific handicap is also limited to male amateur jockeys. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PAGES 22-23

2nd Race 2.55pm

The Colliers Business Rates Experts Handicap Stakes

This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

PAGES 28-29

3rd Race 3.30pm

The BetMGM Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs There are a variety of reasons why the horses in this contest are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances in their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

PAGES 38-39

4th Race 4.05pm

The BetMGM Noel Murless Listed Stakes

This one mile and six furlong contest for three-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 1lb for colts and geldings and 8st 10lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success.

PAGES 44-46

5th Race 4.40pm

The BetMGM Handicap Stakes

This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 105 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80

PAGES 48-50

6th Race 5.15pm

The Victoria Racing Club Classified Stakes

This race is a one-mile classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90 Unlike a handicap when a horse’s rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rivals

Last February, Simone Meloni was crowned Employee of the Year at the 2025 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards, sponsored by Godolphin and organised by the BHA. The awards recognise and celebrate the dedication of those working across British racing in training yards and studs who are the backbone of the sport.

Employed by Nicky Henderson, Simone collected his prize at a glittering ceremony held at York Racecourse. Having already won the Rider/Racing Groom Award earlier in the evening, he went on to claim the overall title, winning £30,000 of the awards £128,000 total prize money pot, which was shared between himself and Nicky Henderson’s yard to benefit the Seven Barrows team.

Simone’s journey to the yard of leading jumps trainer Nicky Henderson began in his native Italy, where he first developed his skills and passion through showjumping. Simone is known for his meticulous attention to detail in caring for each horse as an individual, as well as for his infectious enthusiasm and positivity, and the judges praised not only his horsemanship but also the uplifting effect he has on the entire yard

Reflecting on his win, Simone said:

“I was really happy to win the awards and to give something back. We celebrated with a nice dinner with everyone from Seven Barrows, and later my parents organised a big party in Italy! But the best moment was returning to the yard after the ceremony and seeing how happy everyone was, that meant the most to me. ”

Nicky Henderson added:

“This was something very special. We were so proud to nominate someone who not only won his category but also the Employee of the Year. It is much deserved. The whole team got behind him and with the prize money we’ve updated a room on the yard into a communal space for everyone to enjoy. Furthermore, Simone has now been promoted to Barn Manager for the season - he really is exceptional.”

Simone’s story is a reminder of the passion, skill, and dedication that define the very best of British racing, together with how these awards really make a difference to both the person as well as to the teams they work alongside.

Looking ahead to 2026, the awards ceremony will return to the prestigious venue of Ascot Racecourse, and with generous backing of Ascot Racecourse Supports, it promises to build on their success and once again provide a fitting celebration of the skill and commitment of the people at the heart of British Racing.

For further information on the 2026 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards, including categories and criteria, and to nominate visit thoroughbredawards.co.uk. Nominations close Tuesday 4 November.

22. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Dannick also looks capable of making his presence felt along with Cancan In The Rain, Amused and Lady Mariko in this highly competitive event.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.

The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.

Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree

as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys

The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

Further information on safety and welfare in horse racing can be found at horsepwr.co.uk

GOOD SHOW has fallen to a handy mark and makes plenty of appeal faced with a greater test of stamina on just his third start for Andrew Balding. Hat-trick seeking Double Meaning remains unexposed as a stayer and could prove the main danger if confirming his recent progression back on turf. Two-time C&D winner Blazeon Five may prove best of the rest, while Calvert shapes as though he’ll be suited by the step up to 2m and merits respect with Oisin Murphy aboard for the first time.

This philosophy finds its boldest expression in BEYOND’s 8 million sq. ft. masterplan at Dubai Maritime City, home to the region’s first Forest District by the Sea. With 65,000 square

meters of community parks, including 55,000 square meters of native woodland, this nature-first destination redefines coastal living. Within this masterplan, BEYOND has launched six signature projects to date: Aria, Saria, ORISE, Sensia, The Mural, and Talea, each crafted in collaboration with worldrenowned architecture firms including BENOY, SOMA, Nabil Gholam, HBA, and DWP.

Rooted in cultural awareness and shaped with intention, BEYOND creates environments that awaken imagination and elevate the experience of home Every detail is considered, offering more than just a residence, but a place to feel grounded, inspired and free

At its heart, this partnership is about more than alignment. It’s about aspiration, a shared belief in creating experiences that endure As BEYOND continues to shape the waterfront lifestyle in Dubai and explore new horizons abroad, the values of purpose, place and possibility remain at the core of every step forward. From the track to the shoreline, from legacy to modern living, from tradition to transformation, BEYOND and Ascot each stand as expressions of timeless vision shaped by place, people and purpose

This year’s annual staff volunteers’ week, which took place 15-19th September 2025, saw 100 team members head out into our community to help 17 local charities. Together, we contributed 461 volunteer hours – equating to 66 working days

The initiative forms part of our Ascot Racecourse Supports programme with the charities chosen addressing a wide range of important issues, including homelessness, isolation, mental health, disability and support for children and young people.

Concurrently, volunteers also helped with the Riding A Dream Academy Taster Days that we hosted at our stables. Over the course of the week, we welcomed 50 students identified as not normally having access to horses and ponies and those from diverse ethnic communities and low socio-economic backgrounds. These students were introduced to the world of riding and horse racing with many now showing an interest in progressing a career in our sport, evidencing the social impact of this programme.

In summary, a great week of giving back whilst enabling our staff to learn more about the charities we support and meeting new colleagues.

A big thank you to all the charities that welcomed us, namely: Ascot Day Centre, Busy Buttons, DEBRA, Dingleys Promise (Reading & Wokingham), First Days, Jealotts Hill Landshare , Just Around The Corner, Learning To Work, Quest RDA, Riding A Dream Academy, Slough Foodbank, Thames Hospice, The Cowshed, Together As One, Windsor Homeless Project & Youthline.

All-weather form often translates well to this track and GRIZEDALE, who has shown plenty in his three starts on synthetics, gets the nod in this competitive heat. At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
