Ascot - Saturday 17th January

Welcome

Welcome to our first race meeting of 2026, the BetMGM Clarence House Chase Raceday.

Today is the middle leg of the second annual Berkshire Winter Million, a three-day event held in partnership with our neighbours at Royal Windsor Racecourse. The feature is the BetMGM Clarence House Chase, always one of the highlights in the calendar and the first Grade 1 of the year in Britain.

Last year’s winner Jonbon is back for Nicky Henderson and he bids to join Un De Sceaux and Master Minded as a multiple winner of the race. Il Etait Temps from the Willie Mullins stable will prove stern opposition though and let’s hope that we are treated to a similar spectacle as in 2022 when Shishkin and Energumene served up one of the all-time great duels for those same two trainers. The progressive Thistle Ask and Gidleigh Park complete the small but select field.

Other highlights on the card include the Grade 2 BetMGM Warfield Hurdle and an intriguing BetMGM Juvenile Hurdle which last year launched the British career of subsequent Grade 1 winner Lulamba. The bet365 Handicap Chase has been won by the likes of Dashel Drasher and Cyrname in the past.

In total there is £435,000 in prize money across the seven races and we would like to thank BetMGM for their continued generous sponsorship of this raceday as well as bet365 for their support

If you would like to meet a former Clarence House Chase winner then head over to the Cedar Tree Lawn to see our new Jumps season Equine Ambassador, Editeur Du Gite. ‘Eddie’ won this race in 2023 when it was held at Cheltenham, and he is giving Side Glance, our year-round Equine Ambassador since 2023, a well-earned rest over the winter months

Our next meeting is the Betfair Ascot Chase Raceday on Saturday 14th February We hope to welcome you back then.

Yours sincerely,

14-51

RACING PAGES

Your guide to all of today’s races

The BetMGM Juvenile Hurdle Race

Our opener is a Juvenile hurdle which is designed solely for four-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battlehardened rivals Initially every runner in this two-mile hurdle is allotted 11st (fillies 10st 7lb), before previous winners are given a penalty.

PAGES 20-22

2nd Race 1.00pm

The BetMGM Handicap Steeple Chase

This handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140 is run over three miles. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival.

PAGES 26-27

3rd Race 1.40pm

The BetMGM Warfield Mares’ Hurdle Race (Grade 2)

Grade 2 races are high class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch fillies and mares lining up and possibly some Cheltenham Festival contenders. Initially, the weights in this two miles hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Premier Handicap/Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 2 or Grade 1 success

PAGES 32-33

4th Race 2.20pm

The bet365 Handicap Steeple Chase

Our fourth race is another handicap, this time for steeple chasers aged five-years-old and upwards, run over two miles and about five furlongs To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form

shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms, a horse rated 150 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 145.

PAGES 38-40

5th Race 2.53pm

The BetMGM Holloway’s Handicap Hurdle Race

The next race this afternoon is a two mile, three furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards. As all handicaps throughout the day, the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating.

PAGES 46-47

6th Race 3.30pm

The BetMGM Clarence House Chase (Grade 1)

The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and about one furlong. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football - quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race so the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex.

PAGES 50-51

7th Race 4.05pm

The BetMGM EBF ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle Race (Qualifier)

As the title suggests, novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. This race differs slightly from a standard novice event in that it is restricted to horses that have been specifically bred for National Hunt racinghorses that have previously run on the Flat are barred from taking part This two mile and about five and a half furlong hurdle race is for horses aged four to seven, which are E.B.F eligible and have not won more than two hurdle races

20. Weight (stones/pounds)

21. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Three-Year social impact funding updates

Since 2017, Ascot Racecourse has partnered with Berkshire Community Foundation which oversees a grant funding programme for us with a focus on children and mental health. Currently, we donate £50,000 pa to support various charity/community projects In 2025, that funding helped almost 2,000 beneficiaries As part of this programme, in 2024 we made a commitment to support three chosen charities with grant funding of £10,000 each pa. We are pleased to report the following outcomes to date:

TOGETHER AS ONE, SLOUGH: BOOST

Boost is an innovative mental health project led by Together As One and the Specialist Community Team within CAMHS This initiative is designed to assist young people who are struggling with their mental health while waiting for therapy.

Year Two outcomes: Over the past year, 28 young people were referred to Boost, with 23 achieving their goal-based outcomes. This included a range of tangible improvements in their lives, such as young people who had previously felt unable to leave their homes beginning to reconnect with others, and those who had struggled to attend school returning to lessons and daily routines Alongside this, 26 young people successfully transitioned into CAMHS therapy, demonstrating that Boost not only supports young people while they wait, but also helps build confidence, resilience, and readiness for clinical intervention. The project was awarded “best partnership” at the One Slough Awards and has featured as an example of best practice in a national report by Rethink Mental Illness

SPORT IN MIND, READING: EXPANSION OF SERVICES

Sport in Mind (SIM) is the UK’s leading mental health sports charity, delivering physical activity sessions in partnership with the NHS to aid recovery, promote mental wellbeing, improve physical health, combat social isolation and empower people to move their lives forward in a positive direction.

outcomes This with who to lessons and routines 26 CAMHS practice in Illness. Bracknell,

Year Two outcomes: Sport sessions have taken place across Bracknell, Maidenhead and Reading offering non-competitive, inclusive and pressure-free environments for young people. In Reading, multi-sport sessions have engaged sixth form students to volunteer and provide peer support, consistency and encouragement to help younger participant’s motivation and comfort levels

LEARNING TO WORK, SLOUGH: CREATING OUR FUTURE VOLUNTEERS

Learning to Work is an educational charity set up to facilitate links between education and the world of work to help prepare young people for their future. Many initiatives ensure young people at all levels are supported to navigate their career path journey and develop the skills to be successful. The Charity delivers the Ascot Supports’ Community Challenge programme; an inter-school challenge centred around teamwork and fostering positive change within our local communities

Year Two outcomes: In addition to raising significant funds for chosen charities, students will develop the ethos of giving back whilst offering them a platform to hone critical skills, deepen their understanding of community whilst cultivating a sense of compassion and social responsibility. The finals of this year’s competition will be held later this month at the racecourse with the winning school invited to host a fundraising stall at the February raceday.

Having created a very favourable impression on chase debut at Carlisle, THE JUKEBOX KID didn’t look at home going left-handed at Cheltenham last month but returned to this configuration, he’s well worth another chance. Equine and human welfare at Ascot Racecourse

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants

For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have seen the risk of falling reduce by 11 per cent while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

HORSE WELFARE

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY

In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:

a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.

b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund

Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.

In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.

HBLB
