Let the race begin!

WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Aintree Racecourse, as we gather to celebrate the pinnacle of our racing year, with the Randox Grand National fast approaching. One of the biggest days in the nation’s sporting calendar, this is an occasion steeped in history, prestige and unforgettable moments.

Two extraordinary days have led us here, to the 178th running of the Randox Grand National. Every year, a new name is written into racing history as the winner of this iconic contest, and we can’t wait to see who it will be in 2026 - with the 2024 hero I Am Maximus bidding for a second success.

Alongside the build up to the Randox Grand National, today’s supporting card features a fantastic line up of competitive races and intriguing contenders throughout the afternoon. At 3:05pm, the Grade One Jet2 Liverpool Hurdle promises to see class stayers battle over 3m+, with several established long distance performers expected to go head to head before the build-up to the Grand National itself Each of these races adds depth to the day’s itinerary, ensuring there’s high quality action on track long before the famous National fences come into view.

At 11:30am, a distinguished lineup of former Aintree Champions will parade for racegoers, featuring past Grand National winners Corach Rambler, Neptune Collonges, and Mon Mome It’s a rare privilege to see these remarkable equine athletes in retirement and to hear about the lives they’ve led since leaving the track.

Shortly after the parade of Champions, join Grand National winning jockey Barry Geraghty and TV presenter Leonna Mayor in the Parade Ring at 12:10pm for Official Betting Partner William Hill punter’s panel – hopefully you will be able to mark your card with a few winners!

Here at Aintree Racecourse, we’re proud of our relationship with the local community, and in particular our partnership with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, which stretches back over 25 years. An honorary runner has taken a place in the iconic contest since Randox first sponsored the Grand National at Aintree Racecourse in 2017 and this year’s 35th runner is Oliver Christie Oliver has Congenital Heart Disease, with his main condition being Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which means the left side of his heart is severely underdeveloped and had open heart surgery last month. Oliver is recovering from the surgery well and will be enjoying today’s race from the Alder Hey MediCinema at a special viewing party We wish Oliver, his friends and family, including mum Amelia who works here in the Aintree Racecourse Office, a wonderful day.

DJ Pete Tong is set to continue the Grand National Day party atmosphere with a set after racing live in the Red Rum Garden. The legendary DJ has a career stretching back over four decades as a broadcaster clubland DJ and music industry tastemaker with his emphasis always firmly focused on people having fun. The Red Rum Garden will hit capacity, so we encourage you to get there early to make sure you end the Grand National Festival in style Alternatively, you can head over to the Equstrain Centre where an array of additional entertainment will be available

Our heartfelt thanks go to all the sponsors of today’s card. Firstly, we’d like to extend our gratitude to Randox, our headline sponsor This year marks 10 years of their sponsorship of the Randox Grand National Festival and we’d like to take this opportunity to give them a special mention. It is a pleasure to work with the team and we are incredibly appreciative of their continued support.

We’d also like to thank William Hill, Hallgarten Wines, Turners and Weatherbys We’d also like to thank and extend a very warm welcome to first time sponsor Jet2.

A sincere thank you from all of the team for joining us, we wish you all a wonderful day and are looking forward to a what promises to be a fascinating running of the 178th Randox Grand National.

PARADE OF AINTREE LEGENDS DE LEGE

Aintree welcomes back 4 legendary past Grand National winners to its popular Parade of Champions this year, along with 6 heroes who performed well here at Aintree. These favourites will appear in the Parade Ring at 12.00pm.

Aintree Racecourse would like to thank all the owners and connections of these great heroes for making this annual parade possible each year

MON MOME

(GRAND NATIONAL WINNER 2009)

Twenty-six years old but still a diva, ‘Monnie’ lives on Sarah McQueen’s family farm in Herefordshire. He is still owned by Vida Bingham who makes sure he wants for nothing in his retirement. Sarah and Mon Mome spent many years together at Venetia Williams’ yard and last year they paraded at Hereford racecourse to mark Venetia’s 30 years of training. Sarah has never left his side since before he won the National and now it seems he has taken a shine to her four-year-old son whom he allows to groom and make a fuss of him.

NEPTUNE COLLONGES

(GRAND NATIONAL WINNER 2012)

‘Nipper’ is now 25 and a real part of Aintree Last year he was inducted as an official Aintree Legend and now has his own plaque on the Old Weighing Room wall and is Guest of Honour each year at the Grand National Weights Launch in Liverpool City Centre. Although he is now fully retired and enjoying life in the field with his friends Alferof and Azertyuiop, he still does some public appearances, raising lots of money for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital which he visits on Grand National Friday. He is calm and very intelligent but also cheeky and can give people the run-around when trying to evade being caught.

PINEAU DE RE

(GRAND NATIONAL WINNER 2014)

Twenty-three-year-old ‘Pineau’ is thriving well and lives with Lizzie Brunt’s parents in Worcestershire. After he retired from racing in 2016, Lizzie retrained him for successful eventing, team chasing, showing and hunting, and in 2022 he was a baton relay carrier for the Commonwealth Games. Now Pineau enjoys hacking, snoozing and breakfast and the occasional gallop round the field with his mates. Still very much King of the yard he also gives rides to Lizzie’s little boys

ENDS

CORACH RAMBLER

(GRAND NATIONAL WINNER 2023)

‘Corach’, now 12, retired two years ago but is still a big part of Lucinda Russell’s team. He is ridden daily in the string by Peter Scudamore and is always on hand to lead the young horses to the jumps. Since he appeared at Aintree last year, he has supported the inaugural Kingdom Bloodhounds Point-To-Point and has met many Pony Club and racing fans. Corach leads an ideal life, being turned out after exercise and adored by Jaimie and all the staff in the yard Though kind and gentle, he always caused chaos when he was in training – and now in retirement he still does the same!

Other surviving past Grand National winners NUMBERSIXVALVERDE (2006), SILVER BIRCH (2007), DON’T PUSH IT (2010), RULE THE WORLD (2016), TIGER ROLL (2018 & 2019) and MINELLA TIMES (2021) are all enjoying their retirements in Ireland, as are AURORAS ENCORE (2013) in Yorkshire, HEDGEHUNTER (2005) and BALLABRIGGS (2011) in the Isle Of Man and NOBLE YEATS (2022) in Oxfordshire.

I AM MAXIMUS (2024) is an intended runner in this year’s race at time of press.

OTHER HEROES

WHO RACED CONSISTENTLY WELL AT AINTREE DURING THEIR CAREERS. PLEASE SEE BELOW AND THE NEXT PAGE.

SADLY, WE SAID GOODBYE TO TWO REGULARS IN THE PARADE, WALK IN THE MILL AND VIEUX LION ROUGE WHO BOTH PASSED AWAY DURING THE LAST YEAR.

AHOY SENOR

(RAN EIGHT TIMES AT AINTREE, WINNING TWICE)

A young newcomer to our Parade is 11-year-old Ahoy Senor, otherwise known as ‘Hank The Tank’ because of his habit of dragging his handlers to the field. He retired only a few weeks ago after his final race at Musselburgh in February and still lives at Lucinda Russell’s yard with fellow parader Corach Rambler He is said to pull faces but is really a gentle giant who loves getting muddy in the field and eating carrots. Derek Fox rode him in the majority of his 29 races and loves him, as do all the staff WE ALSO WELCOME TO THE PARADE

PARADE OF CHAMPIONS CONT.

ALWAYS WAINING

(HAT-TRICK WINNER OF THE TOPHAM CHASE)

Always Waining, who celebrated his actual 25th birthday two days ago, could well be known as the ‘Red Rum of the Topham Chase’, being the only three-time winner in the race’s 77-year history in 2010 2011 and 2012. During his 74-race career he ran nine times at Aintree, once in the Grand National. ’Wayne’ may not be big but he is very brave. He is still enjoying life at Peter Bowen’s stable in Wales and Peter has nothing but admiration for his charge, saying ‘The horse just loves Aintree!

BLAKLION

(RAN IN FOUR GRAND NATIONALS)

Blaklion, who is now 17, retired three years ago after running a total of nine times at Aintree including four Grand Nationals and the 2017 Becher Chase, which he won. He was looked after throughout his racing career by Fay Shulton and the two are now happily reunited back in Gloucestershire at trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies’ yard Carrot-loving ‘Lion’ lives with his two best friends Rocco and Pabs, both ex-racers, but he makes it clear that he is in charge He and Fay enjoy hacking and fun rides but cross-country lessons are definitely his favourite. Blaklion paraded at Cornbury Horse Trials last year, advertising the Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme

CHAMBARD

(BECHER CHASE WINNER 2023)

14-year-old Chambard is another welcome newcomer to our Parade, having recently retired after running in a total of 42 races. Bred in France, he moved to Venetia Williams in 2017 and spent the rest of his career with her, the highlight being his Becher Chase victory over the Grand National fences, ridden by Lucy Turner, who leads him up today. Since retiring, he has been making new friends at Peel Bloodstock in Cheshire and this parade will be his very first public appearance His owners David and Carol Shaw say Chambard has always been a gentleman, loves being given treats and having his photo taken – as he has the best smile ever seen on a horse!

DEFINITLY RED

(RAN SIX TIMES AT AINTREE, TWICE IN THE GRAND NATIONAL)

Official Aintree Ambassador ‘Red’ is now 17 years old and we’re delighted to welcome him back to the Parade which he has had to miss for the past two years due to injury Red lives with Andy Robertson who rode him every day in training at Brian Ellison’s yard and, since retiring from racing after the 2021 Grand National, the popular chestnut has twice competed in RoR showing, as well as displaying skill at trail hunting, hunter trials and show jumping. He is still ridden five or six times a week and loves his routine of hacking, schooling or jumping, though much of his day is spent in the field with his mates.

LATENIGHTPASS

(FOXHUNTERS’ CHASE 2022 WINNER, RAN SIX TIMES OVER AINTREE’S BIG FENCES, ONCE IN THE GRAND NATIONAL)

Small in size but huge in heart is 13-year-old Latenightpass, known at home as ‘Bobby’, who holds the distinction of having jumped 120 Grand National fences, never failing to complete here at Aintree Homebred and owned by Pippa Ellis, trained by her son Tom and predominantly ridden by his wife Gina Andrews, he is described by them as ‘the family horse of a lifetime who made Aintree dreams come true’. Extrovert Bobby retired sound and happy a few weeks ago after finishing fifth in the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham.

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2026

Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day.

Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race This is your chance to see the horses up-close Look for signs of their fitness and attitude A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good.

Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.

RACEHORSES EXPLAINED

Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength.

Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes.

On average, Jump horses race - or 'travel' - at 30mph.

Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race

THE 2026 RANDOX GRAND NATIONALTROPHY

ADecadeofPartnership,ALegacyofExcellence

The Randox Grand National is more than a race it is a defining test of endurance, precision and courage, watched by millions across the world.

As Randox proudly marks ten years as title sponsor, this year’s trophy celebrates sporting greatness and a decade of partnership with Aintree

Created with luxury jewellery designer Boodles, the 2026 trophy is a striking fusion of science and sport reflecting Randox’s pioneering spirit while honouring the heritage of the world’s greatest steeplechase

ADecade

of Distinction

For ten years, Randox has commissioned a new trophy design for each winner, ensuring every champion lifts a one-of-a-kind piece of history Three miniature replicas are also presented to the winning Jockey, Trainer and Groom recognising that excellence, whether in sport or science, is always a team effort.

Symbolism in Design

The trophy draws inspiration from the twisting double helix of DNA, symbolising Randox’s commitment to advancing healthcare through research and innovative testing. A molecular network forms the core, a steroid nucleus is engraved on the surface, and a sweeping line represents the finish line all celebrating determination, skill and pioneering spirit. Ten diamonds accent the nucleus, with a small “10” engraved inside the cup to mark Randox’s ten-year sponsorship

A deep red enamel dot atop malachite at the base completes the design, echoing the Randox logo and brand colours.

ATrophyWorthyof Champions

As the field lines up once again at Aintree, this year’s Randox Grand National Trophy stands as a symbol not only of victory, but of partnership, progress and enduring legacy.

On this landmark tenth year, it represents a decade of shared history and the promise of many more to come

All 10 trophies from the past decade will be on display in the Randox Health activation on Grand National Avenue, giving fans a unique opportunity to view the full collection of designs.

OVERVIEW First staged in 1954, the Maghull - which like the Melling Chase and the Sefton Novices' Hurdle is named after the surrounding area - was handed Grade 1 status in 1995 A test for the speedsters, Sprinter Sacre and Special Tiara both won this race as novices before going onto victory at Cheltenham in the Champion Chase the following year Between 2008 and 2021, four Arkle winners took their chance and all four were successful and that contest is often the best guide towards this contest. With seven wins to his name, Paul Nicholls' runners are respected most here

GRADE 1

The betting pointed to a match between Kalif Du Berlais and L’Eau du Sud, but it was the former who came out on top with a dominant display Harry Cobden rode him positive and the five-year-old made all with an impressive round of jumping. He was kept up to his work from flagfall and had matters under control turning for home, stretching clear approaching the second last Brookie stayed on to take second, while L’Eau du Sud failed to land a blow and could only finish third, albeit being sent off as the hot-favourite. The winner sealed matters with a big leap at the last and eventually ran out an easy winner by three and a half lengths.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF FRANNY BLENNERHASSETT

35th Runner

FIVE-YEAR-OLD OLIVER CHRISTIE ANNOUNCED AS HONORARY 35TH RUNNER FOR THE 2026 RANDOX GRAND NATIONAL

Each year, a truly special child is given the honour of representing Alder Hey Children’s Hospital as an honorary runner in the big race, proudly holding the title of the 35th Runner

This year’s ambassador is Oliver Christie, whose mum, Amelia, is part of the Conference and Events team here at Aintree Racecourse

As we celebrate 25 years of partnership with Alder Hey, we are especially delighted to have Oliver representing both the hospital and Aintree on this significant occasion.

Oliver is five years old and lives with a life-limiting heart condition. Without the care and expertise of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, he would not be with us today.

He was born with Congenital Heart Disease, including Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, meaning the left side of his heart is severely underdeveloped. Oliver has undergone five open-heart surgeries, including ECMO support. Most recently, he had his final planned surgery at Alder Hey on March 9th. The operation was a success, and he was discharged just 23 days later Although his condition cannot be cured, Oliver is thriving, full of energy, positivity and a real joy for life.

Oliver also has Cerebral Palsy following a stroke at birth. He has leftsided hemiplegia, affecting movement on the left side of his body, as well as global developmental delay, particularly impacting his speech.

Alder Hey has been a huge part of Oliver’s life. We have spent Christmases there, as well as his first and second birthdays Before his first birthday, Oliver spent three months in hospital, including multiple stays in intensive care and three open-heart surgeries.

On his first birthday, a group of nurses dressed as Teletubbies to celebrate with him, and we even held a cake smash photoshoot in his hospital room, creating special memories in the most challenging of times.

Oliver is a kind and caring little boy, and as a family we are passionate about giving back. For the past four years, we have supported the Alder Hey Christmas Present Appeal, helping deliver gifts so that children in hospital can receive a present on Christmas Day - just as Oliver did.

Despite everything he has been through, Oliver enjoys visiting Alder Hey. The hospital creates a warm, welcoming environment, thanks to the incredible staff. The play specialists, music therapy team, doctors and nurses all help put families at ease Oliver especially loves the live music sessions on the ward, and the play team, who keep him engaged with games and crafts.

During his most recent stay, Oliver particularly enjoyed trips to the MediCinema, where he could escape into the world of film while recovering from surgery, all from the comfort of his bed. It provided a much-needed sense of normality for both Oliver and our family

This weekend, Oliver will be watching the Randox Grand National from the MediCinema at Alder Hey, cheering along with family and friends.

Outside of hospital, Oliver lives life to the full. He has recently started mainstream school and loves making new friends. He also has a passion for horses and regularly visits local stables, where he rides with the Riding for the Disabled Association.

I have worked with The Jockey Club since 2019, and they have supported us throughout Oliver’s journey. We are incredibly grateful to Alder Hey for everything they have done, and continue to do, for Oliver and our family

It is a true honour for Oliver to be this year’s 35th Runner, and we are so proud to share his story

THE WILLIAM HILL HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

OVERVIEW Handed Grade 3 status in 2010, now known as a Premier Handicap, the race was switched to the last day of the meeting in 2016 Run over a trip just longer than three miles, novices and lightly-raced hurdlers have a good record in this race Despite the long trip, proven stamina isn't always a necessity when finding the winner and, in fact, those stepping up in trip for the first time often go well This is one for slick jumpers who travel well and may have a bit in hand at the weights.

Deep Cave, a mudlark who’d done all his winning on a softer going, showed a smart turn of foot stepping back onto better ground to deliver a career-best performance. The outsider Building Bridges set the fractions and kicked for home, opening up a couple of lengths with the field in hot pursuit. Catch Him Derry made eye-catching headway down the outer, but it was Jack Tudor aboard Deep Cave who finished the strongest Bearing down on Danny Gilligan’s mount Timmy Tuesday, Deep Cave had to be angled out for a clear run but once in the open, he quickened decisively to collar the leader and go on to score by a length

7 of the past 8 winners had raced 9 times or less over hurdles

12 of the last 19 winners were running over 3m for the first time

MERSEY NOVICES' HURDLE RACE

OVERVIEW

Handed Grade 1 status in 2014, this race was won in 2000 by subsequent three-time Gold Cup winner Best Mate The Baring Bingham, now known as the Turners, at Cheltenham is often the best form guide to this Gordon Elliott has now won the past four renewals and earlier winners of this prestigious race include The West Awake, Morley Street, Barton, Tidal Boy, Simonsig and Yorkhill. Horses stepping up in trip do well here, so pay healthy respect to strong form over shorter, especially in Graded company.

There was solid support for Miami Magic beforehand, but his chance vanished early when Brian Hughes lost an iron early on Racing too freely after that, he was never in contention With the favourite beaten, Regent Stroll, ridden by Harry Cobden, tried to make all and hurdled slickly, pinging the last and kicking clear He looked set to go all the way, but Mark Walsh produced Honesty Policy late with a strong, sweeping run to pip him close home Funiculi Funicula and Koktail Divin also shaped well and finished with plenty of promise in behind

JOHNNYWHO and Jagwar are both ahead of their marks after finishing 1-2 in the Ultima at Cheltenham and can lead home 2024 winner Am Maximus. Perceva Legallois is yet another likely type in the famous green and gold silks, while at bigger odds, Gorgeous Tom and Favori de Champdou also have plenty to recommend them.

THE WILLIAM HILL HANDICAP CHASE (REGISTERED AS THE FREEBOOTER HANDICAP

OVERVIEW Another stamina-packed race that was given Premier Handicap status in 2018, novices tend to come to the fore The nature of the race usually favours those who have already seen success over at least 3 miles, as despite the track favouring those who may not entirely stay the trip, the pace means there's no hiding place for any in this race.

After taking this race by storm 12 months ago, Cruz Control was back to his best off a 3lb higher mark Freshened up since a run in the Rowland Meyrick on Boxing Day, he returned in top order to hand Tom Lacey a third win in the contest since 2018 Ridden patiently in midfield by Stan Sheppard, he made smooth headway three out, swept into the lead before the second last, and quickly asserted his dominance on the field. Despite hanging on the run-in, he was always holding on Michael Nolan was left chasing on the favourite Imperial Saint, who finished five lengths adrift Erne River outran his odds to finish a creditable third.

The Grand National. Different fences. Fewer runners. Fewer fallers. Same thrilling spectacle. British racing never stands still when it comes to safety.

FACTS & STATS S

OVERVIEW Formerly staged at Ascot, the newly-named Liverpool Hurdle was switched to Aintree in 2004 Awarded Grade 1 status in 2010, the race was conquered in four successive years between 2009 and 2012 by the top-class stayer Big Buck's, and was moved to Grand National day the year after. Modern greats such as Monet's Garden and Thistlecrack feature among the list of winners. Previous form at this fixture has proved a huge positive when trying to identify the winner

2025 WINNER

HIDDENVALLEY LAKE

Hiddenvalley Lake secured victory with a determined display, producing a career best to take Grade 1 honours. Third in this race last year and runner-up in the Long Walk Hurdle, Henry de Bromhead’s eightyear-old relished the better ground and was delivered late down the outside by Darragh O’Keeffe. Strong Leader, the 2024 winner, ran with credit under Sean Bowen in his bid to defend his crown, while Monmiral and Jetara were also in contention. The quartet jumped the second-last together, but Hiddenvalley Lake showed the most heart from there, staying on gamely to prevail

BoardsmillStud homeofPoet’sWord...

BOARDSMILL STUD IN COUNTY MEATH, IRELAND HAS LONG BEEN A SEAT OF NATIONAL HUNT POWER. So long in fact, that last year marked the 90th anniversary of the Flood family standing thoroughbred stallions.

The current three-strong roster comprises the progressive sires Poet’s Word and Sumbal, the pair joined last year by Arrest, a son of Frankel, winner of the Chester Vase (G3), runner-up in the St Leger (G1) and whose first foals are arriving this spring.

John Flood, the third generation of the family to head up the stallion business at Boardsmill, will be hoping that the newest resident can follow a similar trajectory to the farm’s current flagbearer Poet’s Word, who is going from strength to strength both on the track and in the sale ring.

The 13-year-old son of Poet’s Voice enjoyed his best-ever price in the sale ring at this week’s Goffs Aintree Sale when his debut-winning Irish four-year-old point-to-pointer Wordfromhome was sold by Monbeg Stables to Paul Nicholls and Highflyer Bloodstock for a top lot price of £320,000.

The gelding is one of the sire’s 10 point-to-point winners in Ireland so far this season, just the second year he has had point-to-point runners in the Emerald Isle.

On the track, the results are also starting to gain momentum with 22 winners under Rules in Britain and Ireland so far. A first black-type winner was added to the CV in December with Oh My Word’s Listed hurdle victory at Navan, and he has had four black-type placed performers, including the Ben Pauling-trained Taurus Bay. Last February, the gelding was the stallion’s first Irish four-year-old point-to-point runner and winner, and was subsequently sold to Pauling and bloodstock agent Jerry McGrath for £155,000 at the Tattersalls Cheltenham February Sale.

The gelding has since gone on to win twice over hurdles and finish second in a Grade 2 novice hurdle at this year’s Cheltenham January meeting.

In today’s Grade 2 Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk NH Flat Race, Poet’s Word is represented by the well-named The Perfect Poet, who is the winner of one race from one start when successful by six lengths in a bumper at Fontwell in March. The gelding is trained by Pauling and owned by the Basher Watts Syndicate.

Poet’s Word not only has quality on his side but also quantity – every year since his first foals were born at Boardsmill in 2021 he has had a foal crop of over 140.

“He’s a very good-looking horse so people were happy to get in behind him from the start of his career as a NH stallion,” smiles Flood, adding: “Poet’s Word has never had a quiet year since he came to us. That is rare while a horse is waiting for runners, but he’s never dipped on the kind of quality of foal he produces. It’s incredible that a horse with that sort of ability is available to NH breeders so early in his career.”

That kind of support comes as no surprise given his top-class achievements on the track. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Poet’s Word was an emphatic five-year-old winner of the 2018 Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, a race in which he beat

Cracksman, while he then proved his boundless courage as well as immense class when he bravely fought off Crystal Ocean in a stirring finish to the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1).

Flood is acutely aware that the success of a stallion relies on the support of his customers.

“Without your clients you’re nothing, so all those years the family has been in business and standing stallions are a testament to them,” he says. “We have a good, loyal client base that has returned year on year, and we’ve been delighted that people have seen fit to come back to us and put their trust in us.”

The Boardsmill roster is completed by Sumbal, a son of Danehill Dancer who began his stud career in France before transferring to stand in Ireland. He has had nine runners under Rules in Britain and Ireland this season and three winners, giving him a promisingly strong strike rate of 33 per cent.

“Sumbal has been a bit in Poet’s shadow but is ticking along nicely, and I wouldn’t swap him; he’s got it all to play for,” smiles Flood.

Lasting nine decades in any business is no mean feat, never mind one in which fate and fortune play such a defining role, but the Boardsmill approach to standing stallions has plainly stood the test of time.

“You almost don’t believe it when you hear that the farm has been in business for over 90 years,” says Flood. “Grandad Jack stood our first thoroughbred stallion, and he and my Dad, William, really put the wheels in motion.

“We’ve always called ourselves an independent, family-run stud farm. We put our neck on the line by always buying our own horses; we reap the rewards if they work out, and not if they don’t.” ■

Race preview from Weatherbys

A full field of 20 will go to post for the concluding race of the meeting, the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race Arguably the best recent renewal of the Grade 2 contest took placein2012,whenhigh-classhurdlers The New One and My Tent Or Yours finished first and second, with Court Minstrel (2013 Scottish Champion Hurdlewinner)backinfourthand2015 GrandNationalwinnerManyCloudsin 11thposition.

The New One, who went on to win 17 times over hurdles, including the Aintree Hurdle in 2014, had finished sixth in the Weatherbys Champion Bumperonhispreviousstartandwas thelastfour-year-oldtowinthisrace.

This year’s Cheltenham form is represented by Bass Hunter, who finishedthirdfortrainerChrisGordon.

A free-going six-year-old, he raced more professionally at the Festival than had been the case the time before at Ascot and put up a careerbest, beaten less than 3 lengths by The Mourne Rambler. He had earlier wonatNewburyandthesharpertrack and nice ground will be to his liking andhesetsthestandard.WithFreddie Gordon currently injured, Harry Cobdentakesoverinthesaddle.

Last year’s winning connections are represented by Look Me, who won a four-runner race on heavy ground at Fairyhouse in February. The fiveyear-oldalsotravellednoticeablywell when runner-up at the same track last spring and is bred to cope with thequickerconditions.

Soontobecrownedchampiontrainer, Dan Skelton runs three, with his trio including Risky Obsession, who impressed when winning at Warwick beforestrugglingtocopewithtesting groundatNewbury.Bredtoappreciate a sounder surface, it would not be a surprise to see him return to his best and put up a bold show under the trainer’sbrother,Harry.

ForthfactorhadRonnieRussetbackin fifth when winning at Hexham before finishingbehindBassHunteratAscot, whilst Ronnie Russet has improved with each run, winning at Newcastle before beating Cowboy Casanova (formwithRicesPoolinanIrishPoint) by 11 lengths under a penalty. Jedd O’Keeffe’s Passing Glance gelding is clearlyprogressive.

Ben Pauling is another who is well represented,withtheNaunton-based trainersaddlingfour.MerryAwayalso looked promising when winning at Warwick, whilst the aforementioned RicesPool, thechoiceofstablejockey Ben Jones, impressed when winning with plenty in hand at Taunton. He boasts a nice pedigree, being a halfbrothertoGrade1winnerSlateHouse.

Smile John Boy chased home Risky Obsession before finishing fourth in what looked to be a strong contest at Kempton, a race in which Jane Williams’ four-year-old Merlin Allen finished third. The former is weighted to reverse that form but Merlin Allen had earlier looked full of potential when winning over today’s courseand-distance by 8 lengths back in November.

FACTS & STATS S

OVERVIEW The meeting concludes with a typically competitive renewal of the Weatherbys Aintree Bumper, showcasing some of the most promising young National Hunt prospects. A key end-of-season target for bumper horses, it often provides a glimpse of future stars. Run over a sharp trip, the emphasis is very much on pace, favouring those with a turn of foot rather than thorough stayers likely to come into their own over further in time

The Festival wrapped up with a lively bumper and the Grand National winning trainer/jockey were handed another success as c justified the strong market support. Patrick Mullins always travelled powerfully towards the fore of the pack in the two shades of green silks and produced a sparkling turn of foot inside the final furlong. Destination Dubai laid down a strong challenge under Kielan Woods, who also was on the front end, and they pulled nicely clear from the remainder
