Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength.

Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes.

On average, Jump horses race - or 'travel' - at 30mph.

Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race

THE 2026 RANDOX GRAND NATIONALTROPHY

ADecadeofPartnership,ALegacyofExcellence

The Randox Grand National is more than a race it is a defining test of endurance, precision and courage, watched by millions across the world.

As Randox proudly marks ten years as title sponsor, this year’s trophy celebrates sporting greatness and a decade of partnership with Aintree

Created with luxury jewellery designer Boodles, the 2026 trophy is a striking fusion of science and sport reflecting Randox’s pioneering spirit while honouring the heritage of the world’s greatest steeplechase

ADecade

of Distinction

For ten years, Randox has commissioned a new trophy design for each winner, ensuring every champion lifts a one-of-a-kind piece of history Three miniature replicas are also presented to the winning Jockey, Trainer and Groom recognising that excellence, whether in sport or science, is always a team effort.

Symbolism in Design

The trophy draws inspiration from the twisting double helix of DNA, symbolising Randox’s commitment to advancing healthcare through research and innovative testing. A molecular network forms the core, a steroid nucleus is engraved on the surface, and a sweeping line represents the finish line all celebrating determination, skill and pioneering spirit. Ten diamonds accent the nucleus, with a small “10” engraved inside the cup to mark Randox’s ten-year sponsorship

A deep red enamel dot atop malachite at the base completes the design, echoing the Randox logo and brand colours.

ATrophyWorthyof Champions

As the field lines up once again at Aintree, this year’s Randox Grand National Trophy stands as a symbol not only of victory, but of partnership, progress and enduring legacy.

On this landmark tenth year, it represents a decade of shared history and the promise of many more to come

All 10 trophies from the past decade will be on display in the Randox Health activation on Grand National Avenue, giving fans a unique opportunity to view the full collection of designs.

FACTS & STATS S

OVERVIEW This two and a half mile handicap hurdle is always a competitive contest and is one of the intermediate horses. Many trainers target this due to the favourable trip, with novices holding a particularly strong record thanks to the lateness it is staged in the season With a big field, horses with strong tactical speed are able to excel and it is crucial to look for horses who have run in march.

The Jonjo & A J O’Neill-trained Wellington Arch arrived in top form unbeaten outside the first two in five starts over hurdles, and produced a career-best to maintain that record Sean Bowen set a strong pace on Wade Out, but Jonjo O'Neill Jr had Wellington Arch travelling smoothly before taking it up three out and quickening clear. He pinged the last with a five-length lead and looked home and hosed However, Mark Walsh produced Kopeck De Mee with a late surge, but Wellington Arch showed his true colours and held on by a neck in a nail-biting finish. A case can be made for plenty, but this sets up perfectly for last year’s third FAVOUR AND FORTUNE, who is entitled to come on a good deal for his return at Kempton. He’s narrowly preferred to Joyeuse, following her eye-catching third in the County. French recruit Emid’io Pepe is afforded plenty of respect on first start for Dan Skelton, with Jazzy Matty also considered after his near-miss in the Grand Annual.

1 RUN OVER THREE MILES, 210 YARDS 19 FENCES TO BE JUMPED

Cheltenham Festival form once again proved key as Caldwell Potter followed up his Golden Miller success to complete the Cheltenham–Aintree double. Harry Cobden was positive from flagfall, sending him straight to the front and dictating a strong gallop Down to three turning for home, Caldwell Potter had jumped slickly and kept finding more at every fence He was slightly low at the second last, allowing Jordans to close and briefly catch the eye, but Paul Nicholls’ inmate responded gamely Soundly over the last, he stayed on powerfully to hold his rival at bay and score by a length and a half TOTAL PRIZE FUND OF

OVERVIEW

A test of speed, this race was handed Grade 1 status in 2016 and often offers up another chance of glory to those who ran well in defeat in the Supreme Novice's Hurdle at Cheltenham Nicky Henderson boasts a fine record in the race and his winners include subsequent dual Champion Hurdle winner Buveur d'Air, who won this in 2016, and the 2022 winner Jonbon This two miles and half a furlong contest needs a novice who possesses plenty of ability and speed. Horses graduating through bumpers have genuinely been the key to finding winners in recent years.

Last year's renewal produced a clear-cut winner as Salvator Mundi stamped his authority in Grade 1 company for Willie Mullins Run at a solid clip Romeo Coolio led in the hands of Sam Ewing, before being challenged approaching the final flights. Salvator Mundi moved into contention under Paul Townend with ease and, despite a slight mistake at the last, quickened away impressively to school his rivals by seven lengths. OVERVIEW

Another Grade 1 with a rich history, the Melling Chase was added to the racing calendar in 1991, with Grade 1 status handed for it's inaugural running. Named after the nearby village of Melling, situated on the famous Melling Road which crosses the racecourse, this is for many the feature race on Ladies Day. Another event over the intermediate trip of two miles and four furlongs, the likes of Don Cossack, Finian's Rainbow and Sprinter Sacre feature on the roll of honour

Despite a field of just four, the 2025 renewal still remained with plenty of quality but the race was dominated by the classy Jonbon, who notched back-to-back victories. The Nicky Henderson-trained nine-year-old took command down the back straight, following the heavy fall of El Fabiolo. He jumped fluently and quickened after the second-last to put the race beyond doubt Under Nico de Boinville, Jonbon proved his love for Aintree once again Protektorat ran out a comfortable second but never was in danger of troubling the winner

FACTS & STATS S

THE RANDOX TOPHAM HANDICAP CHASE

OVERVIEW The second of three races run over the famous Grand National fences, the Topham is staged over almost half the distance of the Randox Grand National Always Waining landed his race for three successive years from 2010 to 2012, with Ultragold winning back to back renewals in 2017 and 2018 This race is always a tough ask, so it's no surprise to see that horses with plenty of previous experience over the fences fare the best.

DE MEE

The experienced Gentleman De Mee, a 2m winner on Grand National Day in 2022 showed his fondness for Aintree once again Always in contention approaching two out, Mark Walsh found himself boxed in between a wall of runners but weaved his mount into the clear A loose horse played a part in the finish, with Lisnamult Lad slightly hampered in the runin and it remains to be seen if that affected the overall result Nevertheless, Willie Mullins’s charge was strongly on top at the line and the pair pulled nicely clear of The Goffer who was best of the remainder that finished.

FACTS & STATS S

OVERVIEW

The longest distance of the novices' hurdles staged at this fixture, the Sefton is one race in which 'fresh' horses - those by bypassed Cheltenhamtend to have a equally strong chance of gaining Grade 1 honours, as those who contested the Albert Bartlett. Second-season novices (and those with experience) are certainly worth noting and the list of previous winners include the likes of Iris's Gift, Black Jack Ketchum, Thistlecrack and Champ, whilst Dancing City provided the Irish with a rare success back in 2024

JULIUS DES PICTONS

Battle Born Lad and Moon Rocket forced the early pace but both paid the price, eventually dropping back through the field. The favourite Califet En Vol took it up three out but was soon under pressure, while Mister Meggit travelled strongly before finding little when asked any serious questions by Jonjo O'Neill Jr Julius Des Pictons was produced with a well-timed ride by Gavin Sheehan who relished the step up in trip and showed plenty of grit to lead on the run-in Minella Rescue stayed on well at big odds, with Crest Of Fortune also outrunning his price in third.

ZEUS POWER ran a cracker, faring best of those held up in the Baring Bingham at the Cheltenham Festival and, with the longer trip likely to be within range he looks well worth siding with to come out on top. Johnny’s Jury showed stamina in abundance to prevail in the Spa and remains unexposed as a stayer, while No Drama This End retains obvious potential having had little go right at the aforementioned meeting.

FACTS & STATS S

Back from a near year-long spell off the course, She’s A Saint made a striking reappearance, defying the test over a shorter trip The pace unfolded in her favour with the field winding it up a long way from home Slugger loomed up travelling strongly, with Fin Maguire sitting motionless for as long as possible Celtic Dino was produced to throw down a serious challenge at the final flight, and it briefly looked a match between those two. However She’s A Saint found another gear when asked and readily took control of the race She swept past late on to score with a bit left in the tank, putting Slugger in second and the well-backed Celtic Dino back in third.
