Jackson County is CAP Country

Father Ralph Beiting The idea of CAP beginning an opera­ tion in Jackson County was formed ear­ ly. In the late. 1950’s, much discussion had gone on between myself and a young man of Tyner, Kentucky, Mr. Mac Moore, with the hope that we might start a woodworking factory there in Jackson County, utilizingj the natural wood of the area as the basis of the operation, A stint in the Army on the part of

Mac Moore and a lack of funds on the part of ours, prevented the operation from getting started. In the meantime, the young man by the name of Charley Simpson, down in Berea, was being contacted, concerning his availability to work in the woodworking shop in Jackson County. Finally he was forced to move to Ashland and the idea was left for some time. Finally in the winter of 1963, the first land was purchased by CAP in Jackson

County to begin the work that is presently carried on there. Jackson County was selected because we felt that it had the greatest need for economic encouragement and that it represented in many ways,, the inner counties of Appalachia, where there was not great coal, and there was not great tourism, but it was as it were, sheltered within the confines of Ap­ palachia with few economic factors working for its improvement.
