Lamentations of Jeremiah ...........................................................................................................Thomas Tallis (1505-1585)
Here begin the lamentation of Jeremiah the prophet.
ALEPH.
How lonely sits the city that was full of people! How like a widow has she become, she who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave.
BETH.
She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has none to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they have become her enemies. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God.
From the lamentation of Jeremiah the prophet.
GHIMEL.
Judah has gone into exile because of affliction and hard servitude; she dwells now among the nations, but finds no resting place .
DALETH.
Her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. The roads to Zion mourn, for none come to the festival; all her gates are desolate; her priests groan; her virgins have been afflicted, and she herself suffers bitterly.
HETH.
Her foes have become the head; her enemies prosper, because the Lord has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God.
Chamber Choir Dr. Ryan Kelly, conductor
Die Nachtigall
The nightingale was far away ; spring lures her back again . She has not learned anything new, but sings old, beloved songs.
Amanda Erno , graduate assistantconductor
Rejoice, glorious Virgin, lovely beyond others Farewell, most beautiful maiden, and pray for us to Christ.
Laney Milton, graduate assistant conductor
Vita de la mia vita .......................................................................................................................William Hawley (b. 1950)
Life of my life, you are to me like a pallid olive or a fading rose; Nor are you deprived of beauty, but in every way you please me, whether you flatter or shun; and whether you follow me or flee , softly you consume and melt me.
Pyerce Oates, graduate assistant conductor
Illuminare..................................................................................................................................Elaine Hagenberg (b. 1979)
I. Splendor
Splendor of God’s glory, brings forth light from light, light of light, light’s living spring, Day, all days illuminates.
Laney Milton, graduate assistant conductor
II. Caritas
Love abounds in all, from the depths most excellent to beyond the stars, and loving toward all she has given the highest king the kiss of peace.
Pyerce Oates, graduate assistant conductor
III. Nox
Lord, have mercy. Christ have mercy. Night and darkness and fog, confused world and turmoil, Earth’s gloom torn apart, struck by the sun’s piercing ray.
Amanda Erno, graduate assistant conductor
IV. Munera pacis
Behold, already night and shadows taper roll ; light and dawn sparkle and quiver . We humbly beg the Lord through song . Our voices pray: Though we are guilty, view us with compassion . Banish anguish, bestow health , grant us everlasting goodness , give us peace. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you: not as the world giveth, give I to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Cora Heiser,
soloist
Ethan Starr, graduate assistant conductor
