TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord, the only begotten S on, Jesus Christ, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, who takes away the sins of the world; have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world; receive our prayer. You sit at the right hand of the Father; have mercy upon us. For you alone are he H oly One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. – Medieval liturgy
Adoramus te Christe
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, who by your holy cross has redeemed the world. You, who suffered death for us, O Lord, O Lord, have mercy on us. – Medieval liturgy
Love and Harmony Reign Here
Come, come, bid adieu to fear; love and harmony live here. No domestic jealous jars, buzzing slanders, wordy wars in my presence will appear. Love and harmony reign here. Sighs to amorous sighs returning, pulses beating, bosoms burning, bosoms with warm wi shes panting, words to speak those wishes wanting are the only tumults here, all the woes you need to fear. Love and harmony reign here. – John Dalton
Lamentations of Jeremiah
Here begins the lamentation of Jermiah the prophet: ALEPH. How lonely sits the city that was full of people! How like a widow has she become, she who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave. BETH. She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has none to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they have become her enemies. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord your God. – Lamentations 1:1-5
A Dedication
If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain. – Emily Dickinson
Hymn to the Waters
Flowing from the firmament forth to the ocean, healing all in earth and air, never halting. Indra, Lord of Heav’n formed their courses, Indra’s mighty laws can never be broken. Cleansing waters flow ye on, hasten and help us. Lo, in the waters, dwelleth One, Knower of all on earth and sea, whose dread command no man may shun, Varuna, sovran Lord is he. Onward, ye waters, onward hie, dance in the bright beams of the sun ; obey the ruler of the sky who dug the path for you to run. – Gustav Holst
Let the River Run
Let the river run. Let all the dreamers wake the nation. Come, the New Jerusalem. Silver cities rise; the morning lights , the streets that meet them, and sirens call them on with a song. It's asking for the taking , trembling, shaking, oh, my heart is aching. We're coming to the edge, running on the water, coming through the fog, your sons and daughters. Coming to the edge, running on the water, come! – Carly Simon
Wild Embers
We are the descendants of the wild women you forgot ; we are the stories you thought would never be taught. They should have checked the ashes of the women they burned alive. Because it takes a single wild ember to bring a whole wildfire to life. – Nikita Gill
Salvation Is Created
Salvation is wrought in the midst of the earth, O God. Alleluia. – Medieval liturgy
The Road Home
Tell me, where is the road I can call my own, that I left, that I lost, so long ago? All these years I have wandered; oh, when will I know there's a way, there's a road that will lead me home? After wind, after rain, when the dark is done. As I wake from a dream in the gold of day, through the air there's a calling from far away. There's a voice I can hear that will lead me home. Rise up, follow me, come away, is the call, with the love in your heart as the only song; there is no such beauty as where you be long: Rise up, follow me, I will lead you home. – Michael Dennis Browne
Ring Out, Wild Bells
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, the flying cloud, the frosty light: the year is dying in the night; ring out, wild bel ls, and let him die. Ring out the grief that saps the mind for those that here we see no more; ring out the feud of rich and poor, ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out the old, ring in the new, ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out a slowly dying cause, and ancient forms of party strife; ring in the nobler modes of life, with sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring in the valiant man and free, the larger heart, the kindlier hand; ring out the darkness of the land, ring in the World that is to be . – Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Traveling Mercies
Go in peace, live in grace, trust in the arms that will hold you. Go in peace, live in grace, trust God’s love. Take bread fo r the journey and strength for the fight, comfort to sleep through the night, wisdom to choose at the fork in the road, and a heart that knows the way home. And for the faithful, and for the weary, and for the hopeful, here is my prayer: Go in peace, live in grace, trust in the arms that will hold you. Go in peace, live in grace, trust God’s love. – Billy Crockett
O Perfect Love
O perfect Love, all human thought transcending, lowly we kneel in prayer before thy throne, that theirs may be the love which knows no ending, whom thou in sacred vow dost join in one. O perfect Life, be thou their full assurance of tender charity and steadfast faith, of patient hope and quiet, brave endurance, with childlike trust that fears no pain or death. Grant them the joy which brightens earthly sorrow; grant them the peace which calms all earthly strife; grant them the vision of the glorious morrow that will reveal eternal love and life. – Dorothy F. Gurney
Somebody’s Knockin’ at Yo’ Do’
Somebody’s knockin’ at yo’ do’. Oh, sinnuh, why don’ you answuh? Somebody’s knockin’ at yo ’ do’. Sounds like Jesus. Somebody’s knockin’ at yo’ do’. Oh, sinnuh, why don’ you answuh? Somebody’s knockin’ at yo’ do’. Oh, sinnuh, my Lord. – Traditional Spiritual
