The ballplayer rounds third and rolls toward home. His blue and red uniform untucked and flapping, Number 19 reaches from his wheelchair, low-fiving coaches, friends, and opponents lined up along the baseline.

Number 19 then leans forward, and without hesitation, he dives headfirst out of the wheelchair, touches the plate, and gives a celebratory slap to the umpire.

WCNY was honored to broadcast the Syracuse Challenger baseball team’s exhibition game live from the Little League World Series last summer. Syracuse has the largest Challenger baseball league in the country, and with your support we traveled with the team to Williamsport, Pennsylvania. When WCNY aired the game, the response from our audience and sponsors was resounding. Adaptive sport defines courage and resilience, exudes joy and ferocity, and champions strength and spirit. These athletes are magnificent, and their stories are amazing, if only for the matter-of-fact way that, like all of us every day, they simply show up to play.

You will be seeing more of these ballplayers when they start their new season in the Spring. In the meantime, tune in Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl to watch a recent wheelchair football tournament held in Buffalo. Our sister station, WNED in Buffalo-Toronto, filmed the tournament featuring teams representing the NFL’s Bills, Patriots, Cowboys, Raiders, Browns, and Chiefs. The games are fast-paced, and the athletes are first class. “It’s amazing to see and know the athletes that are involved here, and the backgrounds and the stories that they have, of the injury they’ve incurred and what they’ve gone through to get to where they are,” said one of the adaptive sports coaches featured in a documentary called “Changing Sports, Changing Lives,” produced by Syracuse University’s David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. “You always see in [traditional] sports programs they have a team, and they’ve got that one guy that has that great story. Well, I’ve got a team where everybody has a great story,” he said. WCNY plans to air “Changing Sports, Changing Lives” in the Spring. We will bring you more coverage of the Syracuse Challenger Baseball League. Then, we will cover adaptive basketball, sled hockey, and more football and baseball in the seasons ahead.

Get to Know the "Creatures" of WCNY In honor of a new season of "All Creatures Great and Small," we're proud to feature some of our WCNY employees and their adopted pets, along with the local rescue organizations that brought these cherished furry companions into their lives. Have you recently adopted a pet from a local animal rescue? We'd love to see your four-legged friends! Share photos of your adopted pet(s) with us on social media, and don't forget to tag us @wcnypbs.

Did You Know? The domestic dog was the first domesticated animal and has been widely kept as a working, hunting, and pet companion.

Booker & Mango from CNY Cat Coalition "Booker and Mango were adopted through the CNY Cat Coalition, just a little over two years apart from each other. We discovered Booker sitting happily in the coalition's adoption center at the Fairmount PetSmart. Mango, on the other hand, stole our hearts during a spontaneous visit to the Luna Cat Cafe on E. Fayette St. They've been best friends ever since, and enjoy finding warm spots to curl up together, people-watching, and sprinting through the house at 3 a.m." Jason Sebo Accounting Manager

Chippie, Funfetti, & Samoa from All Creatures Big and Small Pet Rescue "We welcomed this adorable crew of kitties into our home in May of 2023. Initially, our plan was to adopt only two kittens, however this quickly changed during our 'meet and greet' at the foster home. Witnessing the strong bond between the three kittens, we couldn't bear to leave one behind. These kittens have become the sweetest and most loving companions, and I am so happy that we ultimately chose to adopt all three!" Lauren Easton Manager, Marketing, Public Relations & Events

Cleocatra from Friends Forever Animal Rescue "We adopted Cleo back in 2020 after the passing of my grandmother. In an effort to bring joy back to my family during COVID, we visited Friends Forever Animal Rescue to meet all the wonderful cats available. It was there that we met Cleo and her kittens. While kittens typically find homes easily, we wanted to make sure that Cleo, too, found her forever home." Jenna Fields Associate Producer

Diesel from Oswego County SPCA (OCAWL) & Summer from CNY SNAP "I rescued Diesel as a kitten after he was found locked in a shed at the beginning of his life. At times, he can still be a bit skittish, and he loves to walk around the house meowing for no reason, but he is the perfect little guy. A few months later, I adopted Summer to be a companion for Diesel. She loved Diesel from the start, but it took him some time to reciprocate the feelings. Now, they sleep together every night and are inseparable." Rubin Wright Project Manager

Kenai from Helping Hounds Dog Rescue "We adopted Kenai (Kee • nai), previously known as Hawk, from Helping Hounds Dog Rescue in June of 2023. He was transported to New York as a puppy, only to grow up in and out of the rescue. As his second birthday approaches in early February, he has found his forever home! His future is bright, filled with camping trips, couch cuddles, and all the love one pup can handle!" Kaytlyn Slaboc Production Assistant

Toby from CNY SPCA "We adopted Toby when he was a kitten. He’s now 13 and the fourth black cat we’ve adopted over the years. We are told there’s always a need for that since many people are still superstitious about black cats. Toby’s not spooky at all. He loves popcorn and watching SU games on TV just like his parents!" Oswego Opera Theater Presents

The Golden Cage The powerful and true story of Oswego’s Holocaust survivors during WWII premieres Thursday, Jan. 25 at 10 p.m. on WCNY-TV. 982 refugees from the Holocaust were brought from Europe to the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter in Oswego, New York and stayed from August 1944 to February 1946. It was President Roosevelt’s only acknowledgment of the Holocaust. All refugees had agreed to return to their homelands after WWII ended, but by that time in 1945 there was nothing to go home to, or it was too dangerous to do so. They wished to remain in the United States and used various means to petition authorities to stay. One was to write an opera that told their story—life in Europe, the journey across the Atlantic, and their experiences at the Shelter in Oswego, referred to as "The Golden Cage." All their physical needs were met, but they lacked freedom. Charles Abeles, an Austrian musician, composed the music, and Miriam Sommerburg, a German artist and author, wrote the text.

You're Invited to "The Golden Cage" Screening Event! Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 4:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of Syracuse In partnership with the Jewish Community Center of Syracuse, WCNY invites you to join us for a screening of the film "The Golden Cage." The event begins at 4:30 p.m. with a welcome reception and light refreshments, followed by the screening at 5 p.m. There is no fee to attend the event, but registration is required. Register today at wcny.org/events. All archival resources, photographs, and historical holdings used in the production of “The Golden Cage” were made available with permission from the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum, in Oswego NY.

RADIO

LINER NOTES If you’ve read past issues of CONNECT magazine or are a regular listener of WCNY Classic FM (and we hope you are both!), you’re already familiar with our very talented local classical music hosts: Bruce Paulsen, Marie Lamb, Adam Fine, Spencer Phillips, and Program Manager Diane Jones. You also have heard on the radio and seen on WCNY-TV our Albany-based political expert and host David Lombardo. In this edition of the magazine, we’d like you to meet three other very important members of our WCNY Radio team. Genevieve Sponsler remembers her first time on the radio, when she was just eight years old, reading a public service announcement for a station in Washington, D.C. where her dad worked. She wouldn’t have guessed that after studying government and dance at Franklin and Marshall College, she’d be working in broadcasting (where her mom was also a public TV producer). Since 2007, Genevieve has worked for Boston-based PRX, a leader in public radio & podcast programming. Through these connections, she’s been able to program great regional shows for WCNY Community FM, like “North Words” from North Country Public Radio and “This Is Ithaca.” She also programs Community FM’s Saturday morning children’s block, which includes the original local podcast “Funky Foodies.” Genevieve also loves “Check It Out” from the Onondaga County Public Libraries. As a podcast producer, Genevieve knows great co-host chemistry is hard to find. The “Check It Out” hosts have it—and they share free library programs for kids of all ages. Recently, Genevieve was excited to hear herself in a recorded underwriting message on WCNY while driving to the Erie Canal Museum—because her son was in the car and he could hear it, too! Peter Wendler was born in Cooperstown and grew up with his parents and younger brother in the rural village of Morris, NY. Peter attended SUNY Oswego for Broadcasting and Mass Communication, where he was heavily involved in student media, graduating early in December of 2019. During the pandemic, he worked blue-collar jobs until he was offered a producer position with WCNY’s “The Capitol Pressroom” in April 2021. In his time at WCNY’s Albany Bureau, alongside “The Capitol Pressroom” host David Lombardo, Peter has worked hard to help provide listeners of public radio stations across the state with in-depth looks at the political happenings throughout New York State and inside the walls of the Capitol. Peter helped cover the New York State Democratic and Republican Conventions in 2022 and assisted in producing interviews with several elected officials. His primary responsibilities at WCNY are editing audio, managing web content, and setting up interviews, both for the six-day-a-week “The Capitol Pressroom” broadcasts, and for their new weekly podcast “Dispatches from Planet Albany.” Joel Stockton grew up in Moravia, NY and developed an early passion for music through exposure to classic rock from his father’s band. Throughout his childhood, he routinely traveled around Central New York with his family setting up equipment, running sound, and further developing his passion for the music industry. Joel is a proud graduate of Cayuga Community College and also attended SUNY Oswego, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcasting and Mass Communications. Joel worked at the college radio stations as a DJ and Public Service Director. He is now a Broadcast Producer and Coordinator for WCNY radio, where he handles many administrative duties, as well as engineering and editing many of the original local programs heard on WCNY Community FM. He’s also heard weekday mornings on WCNY HD-2 Oldies, where he hosts “AM in the AM.” Since joining WCNY, Joel has enjoyed endless opportunities to learn new things and make solid connections. “I not only have the opportunity to work with and learn from a group of professionals who have accomplished so much throughout their careers, but I also get to meet and talk with the people here in our region who are trying to create positive change. It’s really shown me the power radio has in our communities.” Find out more about all of WCNY’s radio stations and programming, and listen live anytime, at www.wcny.org/radio. Morning Altars: Finding a Way to Process the Onslaught of Grief Many of us have been trying to manage a barrage of grief and loss without many effective tools. Some even describe our culture as “grief illiterate.” The rituals that used to help us with processing important life transitions have faded away. My podcast interview with Day Schildkret, the creator of “Morning Altars,” introduced me to a way to process some of the unrelenting bad news.

Bousquet Holstein is Proud to Support WCNY & Community FM. Listen to “Built to Serve” Live or On-Demand at www.wcny.org/communityfm.

An artist by training, Day was experiencing deep grief during the breakup of a relationship, which coincided with the death of his beloved father. The only thing that got him out of bed was taking care of the basic needs of his father’s dog. One day he sat down under a tree and started making crude designs out of natural elements he found nearby. He discovered that making symmetrical designs had a buffering and containing effect on his grief. Now, he teaches people all over the world the process of using natural elements to make “Morning Altars,” using fallen leaves, pinecones, rocks, and feathers. He credits this ritual for helping him through some of the darkest times in his life. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing hundreds of guests on the “Zestful Aging Podcast.” Not once have I been speechless. But when Day told the story of making these morning altars at the 9/11 Memorial—with the fallen branches of the only tree that survived the blast—I was mute. One of the participants had been in the Towers on the actual day of the attacks. He was saved because he went out for a smoke break, but many of his friends were not as lucky. He described the powerful experience of making an altar, using a piece from one of the buildings.

We strive to understand your business and your individual objectives and offer the legal experience to help you achieve them.

Many of us are finding that we are rudderless in coping with the grief that has become our daily reality. Rituals help us make sense of our world and give us a framework in which to organize these powerful feelings. I highly recommend you take a look at Day Schildkret’s work at MorningAltars.com. Nicole Christina is the host of multiaward-winning “Zestful Aging” podcast, heard in 106 countries. She interviews people from all walks of life about how to age with vitality, intention, and joy. Nicole welcomes comments from her listeners. Contact her at zestfulaging@gmail.com. Listen to “Zestful Aging” Live or On-Demand at www.wcny.org/communityfm JAN./FEB. 2024 WCNY.ORG 37

WORK PART-TIME WHILE MAKING A HUGE IMPACT IN THE LIVES OF SCHOOL CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY.

FIRST STUDENT SYRACUSE IS HIRING APPLY TODAY DriveWithFirst.com PARTNER SPOTLIGHT In 1929, a group of dedicated citizens in Utica, N.Y. recognized a need in their community to help people who are blind and visually impaired. This became the origin story for the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI). As it was then, it remains our mission to assist people who are blind or visually impaired in achieving their highest level of independence. CABVI provides services to people in 10 counties in Central New York. We serve people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. We offer a wide variety of services, including Low Vision Care, Vision Rehabilitation Treatment, Orientation and Mobility, Occupational Therapy, Pre-School Vision Screenings, Educational Services, Support Services, Technology Training, and Adaptive Sports and Recreation Programs. CABVI also holds Camp Abilities—a youth development program for children and teens who are blind or visually impaired. The program allows kids with low vision to remain physically active by participating in activities such as tandem biking, beep baseball, rock climbing, downhill skiing, cooking skills, and so much more. Our goal is to teach our campers that there is no limit to what they can do. There are sessions held in the winter and summer. With the unemployment rate among those who are blind at roughly 70%, CABVI also strives to provide employment opportunities for those who are blind or visually impaired in the communities we serve. With more than 300 employees agency-wide, almost half of them have visual impairments. Those employees work in various positions, including administration, production, technology and manufacturing. This is more than just a source of income to them. It’s a form of pride. Today, CABVI continues to work towards the goal we set in 1929 by expanding our employment and vision health and wellness programs in Utica and Syracuse. Our vision rehabilitation professionals also continue to create innovative services that help people who are blind or have low vision. Our mission never stops. To learn more about our programs and services, visit www.CABVI.org. Provided by Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired
