Selected students produce broadcast stories for WCMU, print stories for their assigned community newspaper, and web content for both.
Patrick Bouman is excited to dive headfirst into radio news and get involved in the community. His career goal is to become a reporter for a major online news publication or to help produce documentary films. He is a senior at Central Michigan University, where he studies Journalism, and will be interning for WCMU and the Traverse City Record Eagle this summer.
Sean Chase is a senior at Central Michigan University pursuing a Journalism degree. During his internship with WCMU and the Daily News in Greenville, he hopes to gain valuable experience for a future career in sports radio. His dream is to have a sports radio show in Grand Rapids.
2
Michael Gonzalez is a fourth year at Central Michigan University majoring in Journalism. He hopes to learn more about how to produce multimedia stories and engage in a professional journalistic environment through his internship for WCMU and the Alpena News.
Jill Harrington is a junior at CMU majoring in Journalism and minoring in Theatre and Interpretation. Jill is interning this summer for WCMU and the Midland Daily News. She loves to meet new people through interviews and wants to improve her journalism skills, writing for multimedia and pitching stories.
Ben Jodway is an intern for WCMU and the Pioneer in Big Rapids Rapids. He has covered Indigenous communities and political extremism in Michigan. Ben is a CMU student majoring in History and minoring in Journalism and anthropology. When not huddled over the phone, he likes to read books and play Dungeons & Dragons.

arol and George Quarderer have split their time between Midland and Glen Arbor for nearly 40 years. George is a retired chemical engineer and mathematician, and Carol is a retired educator. They raised two sons in Midland and have three grandsons and a daughterin-law. Upon retirement Carol discovered an opportunity to raise puppies for the Leader Dog School for the Blind. They’ve raised three leader dogs. Now they spend their time loving their three year old dog, Henry, their ninth Golden Retriever. Carol also enjoys playing tennis, bridge, gardening, and reading. George is an avid bicycle rider. They began watching and listening to PBS and NPR when they were in college and have never stopped. They especially love Masterpiece programs, including All Creatures Great and Small, Antiques Roadshow, NOVA, and Ken Burns specials. They regularly look at the WCMU program guide for new programs to enjoy. The Quarderers say they support WCMU Public Media, “because the programs we see and hear entertain, us, but more importantly, they enrich our lives. We always learn something new whenever we tune into our favorite programs, as well as new ones.” Carol and George’s philanthropy goes beyond WCMU Public Media. They have created three endowed scholarships in Education and Engineering benefitting the University of Michigan and Central Michigan University, their alma maters. They are also passionate about trails and have been instrumental in supporting and raising funds for the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail in Empire and Glen Arbor. They are active volunteers with TART Trails in Traverse City, and with the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes. Carol and George are also sustaining donors of the Leelanau Conservancy in Leland because preserving land is important to them, so future generations can enjoy the area’s natural beauty.
The Quarderers feel, “WCMU Public Media provides high quality programs and unbiased information to us. Through our support and donations to WCMU, we want to enable others to experience the same superb and stimulating programs, for years to come, that we now enjoy.”

Discovery Block: Mondays at 8 p.m. Every Monday night in our Discovery Block you’ll find an hour of special programming often dedicated to documentaries. Of special note in July, the four-part series The Arc of Justice.
July 11: Arc of Justice Ep. 1: Not So Long Ago Slavery wasn’t so very long ago. Yet often, accurate accounts of that time have been papered over by history that diminishes or misrepresents that time. Also: a tale of two promises made by the government – one kept, one broken -- and how this history relates to today’s wealth gap between Black and white Americans. July 18: Arc of Justice Ep. 2: A Tale of Two Cities An exploration of policies that hindered African American progress, including home ownership (stories from Detroit and Memphis) and the GI Bill. July 25: Arc of Justice Ep. 3: White Brutality Throughout the nation’s history, time and again, promising signs of African American progress have been shattered by acts of violence serving the interests of white supremacy. August 1: Arc of Justice Ep. 4: A Conversation About Reparations The U.S. has paid reparations to several groups, for a variety of wrongs. But reparations to African Americans have not been paid to date. What’s the case for reparations? And how might such a program work?

• How do we build back public confidence in science and civics? • How can we rebind families torn apart by politics and by the vaccine divide? • How do we come together again, before the democratic experiment falls apart completely?
Here’s how you can listen to WCMU News & Talk • Streaming at radio.WCMU.org • Through the free WCMU App • On Apple Music • On your smart speaker • WCMU News & Talk 89.5-2 Mt. Beautiful Death JULY 20 6:00p
FIA Theater
Looking closely at works in the FIA’s European and American collections, this talk will explore how death is depicted, contemplated, and memorialized in art. From sacred to secular works— objects made for an altar to personal portraits of loss— artists have interpreted the inevitability of death in ways beautiful, mysterious, and sublime. Tracee Glab is the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Flint Institute of Arts. She has her MA in Art History from Wayne State University and BA in Art History from University of Michigan-Dearborn. Prior to her position in Flint, she worked for 10 years at the Detroit Institute of Arts, editing several collection and exhibition catalogues, as well as serving as the editor of the museum’s scholarly journal.
Tracee Glab Guest Lecturer
The Sheppy Dog Fund Lecture has been established to address topics of art, religion, and history, and is funded by The Sheppy Dog Fund, Dr. Alan Klein, advisor.
Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, Spanish, 1746–1828, The Death of Saint Joseph, 1787, Oil on canvas, 217/16 x 163/16 inches. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Richards through the Viola E. Bray Charitable Trust, 1967.19.
