Maps: they fascinate us. Often exceptional works of art, they always ref lect the spirit of their times. Maps tell stories and show how areas have changed. The Great Book of Dutch Maps presents some of the most beautiful and iconic maps in the National Archives collection. With at least 300,000 maps and drawings, the National Archives is a veritable treasure trove for historical research.

In addition to the splendid images, this book also delves into the stories behind the maps. It features different types of maps and charts, created by many known and unknown cartographers, while guest authors further explore the six themes: water, land, navigation, court cases & borders, military, and overseas. The Great Book of Dutch Maps also contains a summary of all the map archives in the collection and is therefore a useful tool for researchers and others who want to make use of this magnificent collection.
