The ‘Hard Blues’ vs the ‘Silky Blues’ - An Old Boy Reflects:

The biannual Southern Suburbs derby clash between Wynberg and SACS rugby is one of the oldest school derbies in South Africa, where the two schools collectively spanning 382 (185 & 197) years of history and tradition, clash on the hockey Astros and rugby fields.

Wynberg has over the years become known as the ‘military school’ due to strong links with Wynberg Military Camp where they learnt how to march before they could ruck. SACS on the other hand started as SA College nestled under Newlands Forest and known as the ‘university school’.

On the field of play and despite the huge rivalry, there exists a sense of immense respect between the two schools.

I was privileged to attend both Wynberg Junior and High Schools and have vivid memories of clashing with the ‘Silky Blues’ from the U10 age group. I also clearly remember the constant confusion and dread as to whose turn it was to wear white shorts or black shorts, due to the very similar schools’ colours. However, back in those days the rain was inevitable and by the end of the game both teams would be indistinguishable!

In my Matric year, my very first game for the 1st XV was away against SACS and sadly we lost! The horror of it under the inimitable coaching legend Ray Connellan, who only smiled in September at the conclusion of the rugby season. We did however restore order by beating them on the return game on home turf and finished the season on a high.
