A sincere thank you to the players, coaches, families, and friends for joining us this year! Your support is invaluable to the growth and development of rugby at all levels in the best spirit of festival competition.
Special thanks to everyone in our Wynberg Community who volunteered their time and energy to support the Standard Bank Wynberg Rugby Festival. Your willingness to step in and help ensured the event’s success.
From our rugby players and supporters, to festival bag packers and gate access controllers, to tuck shop helpers, braai masters, multimedia and digital media, ball boys, scorers, linesmen, first aiders, medics, coaches, team managers, old boys, grounds and facilities staff, catering teams, security, and cleaners, every contribution played an important role.
Events like this simply cannot happen without the support of the greater Wynberg community.
To our music department/entertainers, thank you for ending the event on a high note.
WYNBERG RUGBY FESTIVAL
We launched the first Wynberg Rugby Festival in its current format, a preseason set of 'friendlies' for schools and junior clubs, in 2006, Wynberg’s 165th year.
Over the decades, it has evolved into a platform for youth rugby at different
age groups and all levels from U13 to U19 and draws a broad mix of teams, enhancing competition, friendship, and development across schoolboy rugby. Traditionally supported by sponsors such as Standard Bank, the festival attracts over 1800 players and coaches.
Several aspects distinguish Wynberg's Rugby Festival from other South African schools' events:
Wide scale and inclusivity - the event hosts an unusually large number of fixtures across multiple age groups, not just 1st XV or A Team matches.
A developmental focus, blending established schools and grassroots clubs, which helps expose emerging talent to tough competition.
Strong community engagement with significant local participation and volunteer support.
The festival’s timing and structure provide teams with meaningful match practice ahead of the official season, making it both a preparatory and celebratory rugby occasion.
Hosting the festival has a multifaceted impact:
For players, it delivers an opportunity to test themselves against diverse opposition, build match fitness, and experience a festival environment that emphasises sportsmanship and teamwork early in the season.
For the school community, it becomes a major seasonal focal point that boosts engagement among parents, coaches, alumni, and local supporters, anchoring school spirit around a festival-style sporting event.
Particularly in a milestone year like the 20th edition, the festival reinforces tradition, celebrates past growth, and galvanises alumni networks, strengthening a sense of legacy and continuity.
May the players, coaches, officials, families, and supporters enjoy every moment of the Festival. Here’s to a great 2026 rugby season ahead!

Wishing all teams the very best at the Standard Bank Wynberg Rugby Festival! I know you guys can’t wait for the kick-off this weekend. Big congrats to my old school on celebrating the 20th anniversary of this Festival format, and on 185 years of ‘brothers in an endless chain’. May every match be played in the best of festival spirit, and may the season ahead be successful and rewarding.
