It gives me great pleasure, as Vice-Principal of Sport and Head of Soccer at Wynberg Boys’ High School, to welcome all players, coaches, managers, and supporters to the Wynberg Boys’ High School Freedom Cup. This year’s tournament holds special significance as we celebrate 185 years since Wynberg Boys’ High School first opened its doors. Our school has a proud tradition of sport, and we are pleased to share our facilities and our commitment to providing meaningful sporting opportunities for boys from diverse backgrounds. While soccer is a relatively young sport in comparison to some of our more traditional codes, it has firmly taken its rightful place within the Wynberg Boys’ High School sporting landscape.
The growth of soccer at our school reflects the diversity of our community and our commitment to inclusivity. We are proud that the game continues to bring together boys from different backgrounds, united by a shared passion for what is truly the people’s game.
With Discovery as our headline sponsor this year, we are also proud to celebrate the fifth edition of the Freedom Cup. What began as an Under-19 festival has grown into a national platform that now includes multiple age groups. We wanted to bring schools across the country together to compete and celebrate this momentous period around Freedom Day. The Freedom Cup has become a reflection of how far we have grown as a school community and as a soccer programme.
We are delighted to w South Africa, and we trust that you will enjoy not only the competition but also the experience of being part of this special event. If I may offer one appeal to all teams and coaches: let us play the game in the spirit in which it is intended. This is not about winning at all costs, but about allowing the best team to succeed through fair competition. Let us teach our boys that soccer can be played with passion, while still demonstrating grace, respect, and dignity.
As we celebrate the Freedom Cup, let us do so in the same spirit we would want South Africa to celebrate our own freedom - united, respectful, and proud.
I would also like to extend sincere thanks to everyone who has made this tournament possible: the coaches, players, support staff, media teams, medical personnel, first aiders, field managers, ball boys, referees, and every sponsor who has supported this event.

For all age groups take place immediately after Game 58, the U19 Cup Final, at approximately 15h15.
1. GENERAL RULES
TOURNAMENT RULES & REGULATIONS
1.1 Match Duration
• All matches will consist of two halves of 25 minutes running time for U15, U17 and U19.
• Half-time interval: 3 minutes.
1.2 Injuries
• The clock will continue to run for injuries.
• Players requiring treatment must leave the field unless the referee deems the injury serious.
• Play will be stopped immediately for suspected head injuries.
1.3 Player Eligibility
• Players must be of the correct age group (U15, U17, U19).
• Younger players may play up an age group.
• Players may NOT play down an age group.
• Once registered, a player may not play for another team or age group.
• Each team is advised to register two goalkeepers.
1.4 Squad Size and Substitutions
• Maximum squad size: 18 players.
• Six (6) substitutions permitted per match.
• No rolling substitutions allowed.
• A substituted player may not return to the field of play.
1.5 Late Arrival
• Teams arriving more than five (5) minutes late will forfeit the match.
• A 2–0 result will be awarded to the opposition.
• If a team arrives within five minutes, time will be deducted from the first half.
1.6 Equipment
• Shin pads are compulsory. No shin pads – no play.
• No jewellery may be worn during matches.
1.7 Kit Clash
• The away team must change kit in the event of a clash.
• Bibs will be provided if an alternative kit is unavailable.
1.8 Technical Area
• Coaches and substitutes must remain in the technical area.
• Players on the bench must remain seated.
• Warming up is only permitted at Silverhurst Fields.
• No warming up on main tournament fields or surrounding areas.
1.9 Substitution Procedure
• Coaches must notify the assistant referee.
• Substitutions may only occur with referee permission during a stoppage.

No positional playoffs will be played outside of Cup, Plate, and Bowl finals except for the THIRD PLACE
BRONZE MEDAL (Losers of the TWO Semifinals play for THIRD place).
3. POINTS SYSTEM
• Win – 3 points
• Draw – 1 point
• Loss – 0 points

Penalty shootout (3 penalties each, then sudden death)
4. DISCIPLINARY RULES
4.1 Yellow Card Offences
• Dangerous or reckless challenges
• Dissent
• Time wasting
• Unsporting behaviour
• Two yellow cards = red card
• Three yellow cards (different matches) = one match suspension
4.2 Red Card Offences
• Serious foul play
• Violent conduct / fighting
• Abusive language
• Deliberate handball denying advantage
• Red card = suspension for remainder of match + next match
5. MATCH PROTOCOL
5.1 Teams line up on either side of the referee.
5.2 Teams shake hands / fist bump.
5.3 Coin toss determines kick-off and direction.
5.4 Kick-off immediately after protocol.
6. BEHAVIOUR AND CONDUCT
WBHS enforces a strict code of conduct. The following will not be tolerated:
• Fighting or violent conduct
• Abuse of officials
• Spectator misconduct
• Team bench misconduct
The tournament committee reserves the right to:
• Disqualify teams • Remove spectators
• Suspend players or officials
7. WEATHER POLICY
• Matches paused for lightning or unsafe conditions
• If match cannot resume – result stands as recorded
• If match cannot start – draw, points shared
• Schedule changes may not be possible
• Tournament organisers reserve the right to cancel matches for safety reasons.

LIABILITY
Wynberg Boys’ High School:
• Is not responsible for injuries
• Is not liable for medical costs
• Is not responsible for lost or stolen items
Medical support will be available:
• First Aid • Medics • Ambulance on site
