STATE OF THE SCHOOL

Dear Waynflete Community Members:

Waynflete’s mission serves as the internal compass for daily life in the school, shaping not only what we teach but how we approach our work with children. I have been part of many school communities, but few where the mission is as alive in practice as it is here. I am deeply grateful to the families, alumni, and friends whose names appear in the pages that follow, for their generosity and their commitment to Waynflete’s values.

That shared conviction, which I believe is particularly important amid growing social and political tension, has shaped the choices we have made at the school in recent years. We have clarified the outcomes we hope to foster in the children entrusted to us, many of whom begin at Waynflete in the Early Childhood program and remain with us for as long as fifteen years. That timeframe invites a simple but important question: What will students need fifteen years from now? While the world continues to change in unpredictable ways, many essential capacities remain constant. Students must learn to analyze and interpret complex texts, develop strong numeracy and quantitative reasoning skills, and grow into compassionate and ethical human beings.

Joyful and intentional learning

In the Lower School, faculty have worked to align curriculum, assessment, and reporting with Waynflete’s Portrait of a Graduate. The reports that families receive now reflect this alignment more clearly, articulating where their children are in their learning—particularly in reading, one of the most important predictors of long-term academic success. As a result, teachers have a clearer picture of when to push students further and when to provide additional support.

Learning in the Lower School remains joyful and deeply experiential. Faculty design hands-on experiences that deepen students’ conceptual understanding while also building

collaborative problem-solving skills. The Performing Arts in Lower School (PALS) program is one example of how theater, music, and movement have been woven into the curriculum, giving the school’s youngest students opportunities to express themselves and build confidence through performance.

A calmer, more focused rhythm to the school day

The most significant change in the Middle and Upper Schools this year has been the implementation of a new academic schedule. Over a two-year period, we studied the science of learning and examined how time is structured in schools. Our goal was to reduce the frenetic pace of the day and create conditions that support sustained focus and deeper learning.

Overall instructional time has not changed, nor has access to the breadth of courses we offer. What has changed is the rhythm of the day. Longer class blocks have allowed teachers and students to engage more fully with material without frequent transitions. Students prepare for classes fewer times each week and now have more opportunities to immerse themselves in cocurricular activities. In a recent survey, a strong majority

of students reported that the pace of the day felt more manageable, with workloads that are the same or more balanced than before. While there are refinements still to be made, the early results suggest that the schedule is meeting its intended goals.

Attention, adolescence, and healthy boundaries

Another significant shift this year has been our cell phone policy in the Middle and Upper Schools—phones are no longer permitted for use during the school day. Research from social psychologists and educators makes clear that adolescents are navigating a world designed to capture and fragment attention. Relying on willpower alone is unrealistic when devices are engineered for engagement, and Waynflete has a responsibility to create an environment that supports healthy habits and focused learning.

Since the change, student feedback reflects what we see on campus: stronger in-person connections, improved focus in class, and more meaningful social interaction during unstructured time. These outcomes suggest progress toward a healthier learning environment, and as with the new schedule, we will continue to refine the policy over time.

Teaching

and learning in an age of

artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence presents both opportunities and challenges for schools. It is not going away, and pretending otherwise would do students a disservice. At Waynflete, we intend to position AI as a tool that can support learning while keeping critical thinking and ethical reasoning at the center. Faculty are navigating important questions about appropriate use, trust, and expectations (this work is complicated by the fact that different disciplines require different approaches).

AI holds promise as a tool for differentiation, particularly through adaptive practice that can support students who need additional reinforcement outside the classroom. Teaching students how and when to use these tools responsibly is now an essential part of preparing them for the world ahead.

A healthy institution, grounded in people

Waynflete remains a healthy and vibrant organization, sustained by a community of more than 230 educators and staff who are committed to doing their best

work for children. Faculty experience and retention remain strengths, even as a generation of long-serving teachers continues to retire. Waynflete continues to be a destination school where people choose to stay because of the mission, the culture, and the relationships.

Enrollment remains strong and missionaligned, with low attrition. The school’s finances are stable and carefully managed. As always, the majority of our budget is devoted to salaries, benefits, and financial assistance to ensure accessibility for a diverse student body.

Building for the future

Construction of the new Wellness and Athletics Center is well underway, and we remain on track to open the building this fall. At $19 million, this project represents the largest fundraising effort in Waynflete’s history and reflects a shared belief in the importance of student health, balance, and community. The facility will support athletics, community gatherings, and student development, expanding what we are able to offer students and enhancing the overall campus experience.

I am deeply grateful to the many donors whose generosity has brought us this far, including recent gifts that strengthen both the building project and our long-standing commitment to accessibility through financial aid.

Looking ahead

This is a complex moment in education and in the broader world, one that calls for institutions to be guided by purpose rather than pressure. Waynflete’s strength lies in its ability to stay true to its mission while responding humanely to change. Waynflete’s Portrait of a Graduate is the result of a collaborative process that included input from our entire faculty. It is designed to inform what we teach and how we teach it. The portrait enables teachers to align program, pedagogy, and assessment around a shared vision of student success.

STATEMENT OF BELIEFS

We are devoted to the healthy development of the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Believing that young people are naturally curious about the world, we engage our students with a rich variety of academic and cocurricular experiences, allowing them to explore their own interests, talents, and ideas. Learning flourishes when students are challenged to discover, to create, to take intellectual risks, and to invest themselves passionately in areas both familiar and new.

We believe that diversity is one of the conditions of excellence for our school.

We value the individuality of our students, recognizing that each will take a different path through life. We also believe that every person can be a responsible member of the community and that this sense of responsibility deepens when we treat our students and one another with trust and respect. It is out of respect for each individual that true community arises—a community of diverse human beings who value the challenges of honoring differences and resolving conflict. We believe that personal freedom and mutual support should be tightly interwoven, and that working with others is as important as striving to achieve one’s own goals. Our goals include a commitment: to nurture in students a sense of wonder and a lifelong love of learning; to promote an appreciation for the liberal arts and sciences, while teaching skills of quantitative reasoning, critical and reflective thought, and aesthetic understanding; to develop a school community enriched by cross-age connections, interdisciplinary opportunities, and an understanding of the range and richness of human history and culture; to help students adopt healthy values and acquire new skills in an ever-changing world; to encourage students’ individual initiative and active responsibility for their own learning; to guide students to become active participants in the community as well as stewards of the environment; to be a bias-free community that embraces diversity and fosters a positive identity for all persons; to support students in developing a strong framework for ethical decision-making; and to inspire students to strive for excellence and integrity in all aspects of their lives.
